I really hope they just do this already. My taxes will go up but I'd rather have it happen now then in 10 years when my house in Mcginley Square will likely be worth a lot more money. It is inevitable this well happen and it should adjust when the property is sold.

Frinjc.. Do you know anything about construction? What about this tells you that it doesn't absorb sound? Nothing. I agree developers cut cost. Hell I'm an interior designer who works on projects like this for a living and I know developers are cheap(No i dont just pick the pillows) but just bc it's wood doesn't tell you the accustical value.

I'm not arguing the merits of this building but don't just say negatives things to be negative.

Kencares... Those two buildings are not comparable.

What are you talking about? This is exactly what dumb kids do in the suburbs. The first thought in my head when i saw this was that is the most suburban white kids thing i've seen in a while.

You have no idea how huge of a problem considering MEP is in every aspect. That is why ceilings look so terrible and random.

I noticed architects also tend to consider the mechanical systems of a building only as an afterthought. The mechanical rooms are often so tight space wise and so poorly laid out that you can't service anything.

Thank heaven I have his designs to make me feel like a worthwhile person. Without them I dunno how I'd commute from my freestanding Victorian in Jersey city to my design job NY designing things while taking into account how things are constructed and stupid things like ADA and building codes.
Not that any of that matters but to imply we have no beauty in our commute or life without him is insulting and ignorant.

He is everything I hate about the design industry. A lot of people live in NJ bc they think it's beautiful. I did not want to move to NJ(I'm from LI it's imbedded in my DNA to hate it dumb yes I know)but luckily my husband convinced me otherwise. I love Jersey City and wouldn't live elsewhere.

Will the path station be pretty, yes, but not if you look at any of the details. Look at the benches at the wtc path station. They look very pretty except for where they are attached to the wall and how there is a giant gap between the marble on the wall and the connection of the bench. They put a strip of white MDF to fill the gap.

Yeah know what is a horrible material for public transport? WHITE MARBLE!!!! It's soft as hell, porous, slippery, and shows dirt in an instant! Yeah it looks pretty as long as no one walks on it. It also reminds me of a mausoleum. I'm not sure if this was done intentionally to respect the tragedy or if this guy has his head so far up his ass he didn't see that his finish choices create that feeling.

I live 3 blocks south of Montgomery on the Westside/McGinley Sq and id suggest looking around here. There are alot fantastic houses and it's a 20 minute walk to the path. You have 3 NJ transit bus lines and the dollar buses. We ride bikes 75% of the year which is like 7 minutes.

I moved here from downtown in May and I love it. In the past year more things have started to open here. We got a resteraunt and an adorable coffee shop. It will never be downtown but McGinley sq seems to be improving a lot.

The homeless encampment at JSQ will be pushed elsewhere. When I moved to JC in 2007, there was a huge encampment under the Embankment where Moishe's the moving company is now and Grove St was filled with the homeless. I wouldn't worry about that too much. The developer who is building the new buildings will see to that.

There is such little housing stock in JC in JSQ, the West side , and in the heights you may need to compromise. I got exceptionally lucky with my house on the west side but I had a friend who was looking for a year and just found something in the Western slope.

I went there for Apps and drinks before going to dinner at Left Bank on saturday and I thought it was beautiful inside. The food was great and I enjoyed my wine. It is a really nice spot.

We ranged in age from 26-35 and none of us could read the menu without the candle or our cellphone(this is normally only a problem my 60 year old dad has). We mentioned this to the waiter and he told us they are having them reprinted on lighter paper. The brown looks great but they need contrast.

I'm so glad places like this are finally starting to pop up downtown. The only real compliant I have is the training of the waitstaff needs to be improved. I find this to be a problem at a lot of JC restaurants.

Jcman8... I go to buyrite once a month and stock up. The prices for beer and wine up on the west side are worse than hipster haven bushwick in Brooklyn. The selection for wine is abysmal. what cost $10 Downtown is $15 up here. At Buyrite it'd be $8. It's bonkers.

I went there for my birthday last winter, I did not like the food at all. The portions are very small and the food delivery was discombobulated. It felt more like tapas than a regular dinner. I didn't like the mix of crusines very much. We all agreed the fried rice was terrible and confusing. The service wasn't great but they were still pretty new at that point. It is a really pretty space but the flavor combinations were not for me. I think it depends on your palette. The flavors had a very earthy taste so them and that is not my jam.

My theory with JC resteraunts ID to try every one you csn at least once.

Pls people wear a helmet you are going to die. I ride to and from jsq on my own bike everyday on bergan ave even my husband who never wore a helmet down now wears one. Also avoid JFK at all costs. The sidewalk is not the solution to that danger. there are multiple streets that run parallel, utalize them.

I'm hoping citibike in JC will make JC more bike friendly.

That is not exactly how ada works. I spend A LOT of time working with ADA codes and yes you need a turn around but you need a clear path of 36-44 inches in most spaces. The turn around need to be at change of directions and you can sometimes use a T turn. I'm not saying they aren't violating code bug ADA is much more complicated then that.

If the path narrows but at change of directions it gets wider they may be fine.

Many sidewalks are not 60 inches wide.

Agreed that the "city officials" (User1111--do you know their names?) response was inadequate (ie, don't just say the stations can be moved easily, say that if they are indeed in violation of ADA that will be corrected as soon as possible! "Better understanding how and where people use the bikes" has nothing to do with a code violation.)

That said, User1111 deserves credit for going to the meeting and raising the issue. On that note, may I suggest that the time and energy being spent venting outrage and trying to put one another "in their place" on this message board would be more productively spent addressing Citibike directly about the issue?

Here is Citibike's contact info page:

http://www.citibikenyc.com/contact

I just called them and relayed the ADA violation concerns described below to the Customer Service Representative I spoke with, who told me that calls and emails on the subject sent to the customer service email address linked above would be forwarded to the appropriate person in the Citibike organization.

If you too are concerned about this, please call or send an email expressing your concerns and maybe this can be corrected in a timely manner.

I don't happen to know who in the JC government would be best to address this to, or I'd offer their contact info, too--perhaps someone else can chime in with that?

If nothing else, Citibike and the JC officials working with them will not be able to say later on they were never told about this!

Which stations are actually entirely blocking sidewalk access? I've seen some that cut into sidewalks a bit but not making them any more narrow than some existing sidewalks.

No one is claiming that entire sidewalks are being blocked. The issue is that these CitiBike stations are blocking enough sections of sidewalks as to render them in violation of established state and federal guidelines. A sidewalk needs to be 60 inches across for a wheelchair to be able to turn a full circle, or for two wheelchairs to be able to pass each other abreast.

Precisely. And to add to that, the racks are blocking a wide swath of the sidewalk - also a possible ADA violation. You can scroll to earlier posts within this thread where the exact specs are laid out. Specifically, though:

"All utility poles, light posts, traffic posts, fire hydrants, and other manmade vertical appurtenances are located outside of the sidewalk path. If right of way prevents relocation of an appurtenance, the pathway width is at minimum 32? wide and the length of the restricted pathway is no more than 2?."

Remember, this isn't just about someone in a wheelchair - this is about folks using scooter chair devices; walkers; and also for the visually impaired who have to navigate that sidewalk rack. Close your eyes for a second and imagine navigating one of the longer racks with some spots empty and some spots containing bicycles.

I really hope the city takes a good look at this compliance issue and asks front-line folks who are physically and visually impaired and their advocates for input as well.

I'm certain the Height's based Concordia Learning Center would be able to add their expertise to the discussion as well as the folks from JC Medical Center.

I live on Fairview and Kennedy and actually have a friend in her mid 20s that lives on highland. It's a really safe area. Obviously don't leave both ear buds and use common sense.

If she feels uncomfortable at all there are buses that go down JFK and down begen. There are also non njtransit buses that. She can take down JFK.

I moved up here from downtown in may and underestimated how quiet and convenient it is to live here.

That mid century house is amazing! I went to the open house on saturday. Good luck!

You should also consider over by Lincoln park/mcgingly sq. I moved up here in may and love it! Lots of great old houses and more and more stuff is popping up. I bought a house for less than I sold my condo. I have a driveway and a backyard. Trains are super easy bc I can walk 15-20 minutes, bike 8 minutes or take a bus to jsq from Kennedy, west side, or Bergen. Since I don't have to walk through a building if I take my bike to jsq it's only 35-40 minutes to Chelsea. Same commute I had downtown.

The drunks congregate in the adjacent parking lot. They are slowly being pushed away from downtown.

i don't think that the homeless people were their problem. the food being awful was the problem. I can't believe they lasted so long.

People just wander into the street around journal sq. When I moved downtown like 8 years ago people used to do the same thing, in the last few years it became less common. I forgot how bad the jaywalking can be in JC until I moved up by Lincoln Park a few months ago.

Why do people try to jaywalking on JFK when there are cars coming in both directions? It is absolutely mind blowing!

Re: No affordable homes in jersey city... Mercer loop anyone?

I just moved to the West Side off Kennedy by lincoln park and it is really nice, affordable and convenient to the Path. I have only walked once to the Path so far, i ride my bike every day, and it took about 15 minutes(I walk fast bc google says 20 minutes). My bike ride takes about 8 minutes. Honestly, it has only added 5 minutes to my commute from Dixon Mills to by Bowling Green.

In the winter, when it's really cold i'll probably just take the bus but i did the same thing at Dixon Mills when there was a shuttle bc i was lazy and cold.

I love it. It's quiet, my neighbors are really nice and welcoming, i have a backyard and a driveway, and it's awesome to have a house that doesn't touch other people.

I looked at Mercer Loop. There wasn't anything there at the time but I would have considered it. I ended up in an old Victorian so I got the best of both worlds. The prices may have not risen much in the last 10 years but downtown is bonkers expensive and people have moved to wanting walkable living and urban environments. There is no way that this won't increase the values of the houses that are within a mile of a path station.

The change in these areas over the last 7 years has been amazing.

Painter Interior/Exterior

Home away from home

Hi,

I just bought a house with my husband up on the West Side over by Lincoln Park. We need to get the trim painted, paint removed from the brick and the house power washed. We would also like to paint the interiors top to bottom. We also need some wall prep done. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good painter/contractor?

We want to get this done asap so that we can get it done before it's a historic district.

Thanks!
