Take your kids to Applebee's. Please let there be SOME place in the Hoboken/JC area that isn't overrun by offspring, and the parents who think said crotch-fruit can do no wrong.

I havnt been to a whole lot a places in Downtown in recent years. Has it really gotten as bad as Hoboken? I hate to even lump Jersey City in the same sentence as Hoboken (not sure why you did either), just makes me have heartburn thinking that their are any similarities between the two.

Not the carjackers but that's where all the chop shops are.

Good point.

yes--the public charter school. And I have friends who have their kids in the local public school. Would I have done that if the lottery didn't work out? Maybe. But there's a very good and reasonably priced private school on Bergen (gasp!!), that I would have had no problem enrolling my kids into.

Whoopee, so you're older than me. Question is, do you live here currently. No, you don't. So once again, your response is based on here say or the simple notion that because you were born and raised somewhere in jersey city, you are the end all and be all of what neighborhood is decent.

Oh yea ya got me, I'm sure the neighborhood changed drastically the past 2 years.............. how do you do the rolls eyes face?

And let me guess, you don't live anywhere near here.
Here we go again. Really, the only reason I check this site is to make sure that if anyone posts anything about this part of town, that they are getting an honest portrayal of the area, based on people who actually live here and not people who base everything they know from what they read in the jersey journal, here say, or from what they remember from the eighties.
I live here, I own here, and I am raising two happy young kids with my husband here. I grew up in a small wealthy town in north jersey, and I hated it. There was absolutely no diversity, both economically and culturally, and no sense of community. My kids will have a healthy understanding of the world they live in. There are plenty of decent people here, with money and without.
We have great neighbors, the kind that watch your property, help with house stuff and our kids are all very close to each other. I don't live in a bubble. I live knowing that I live in a city that has it's crime, and while I long for a good coffee shop/restaurant, I have all my basic necessities met, without having to drive everywhere. I walk/ride my bike to the path for work, so I am lucky enough to take advantage of what NYC has that JC does not. In the eleven years I've lived here, I have not been broken into, have not had my car stolen, have not been mugged, have not feared for my life. I am a small female and walk/bike home from the train in the evenings everyday. When it is late, I take a cab. Hope this helps.

I know that area of Jersey City and many more areas, for many more years than you have.

I really didn?t want to get into this, but our non-profit are the ones that deal with this on a daily basis. You don?t clean up the human waste on the playground equipment, have to shovel sh.t out of the gardens that the children are allowed to play in, collect all the empty liquor bottles every day, and find empty packets of drugs and needles throughout the park.

I?ve asked our 5 regulars to please throw their bottles in the trash, not to sleep on the picnic table benches (because it prevents others from using them), not leave their cardboard boxes in the gardens or in the gazebo, and did not call the police once until the last week when numerous parents expressed concern over the broken bottles and human waste around the park (and no, it?s not from dogs).

I first called social services, who came out to talk to most of our homeless and none were willing to accept help. Unless they are a threat to themselves or others, they can?t be forced off the streets. The last resort has been to call the police and have them removed from the park. This is not a lack of empathy; we have been polite, caring, and tried to be helpful, but it?s gotten to the point that the quality of life for the vast majority of park users has been impacted.

What we need is a system to help these people who are in a very bad place in their lives?this is not class warfare or elitism, we have been working to improve the quality of life for those in our community and the city needs to find a way to help these individuals too.

From what I've read in the past I can only commend what you do. Unfortunately I have my opinion and to a degree differs from most here. VVP is a hop skip and a jump from the....... dun dun dun "HOOD" these things are going to happen. The only way to solve it is to turn JC and everything around it to a crime free zone.....which we all know will never happen , or at least not in our lifetime. In the meantime to keep the park up to you down towners standards its gonna take a lot of sweat and tears.

I've lived in the Heights for a little over 3 years, and am increasingly discouraged (the end of 10/99S service from NYC being the final straw) with inaccesibility, dirty streets, boarded up buildings, and what seems to be an increasing influx of really low-class 'elements'. I would love to try to move downtown JC or Hoboken, but I'm a first time homeowner and am not sure how to approach selling my condo in Heights. How do I realistically assess what its worth, how to market it, etc.?

Or does renting it make more sense? I LOVE the place - a small loft with high ceilings, quiet, lots of light, but no true BR - sadly a bad match for the typical Heights demographic.

Ideas or suggestions?

What made you move to JC heights in the first place?

Estrela Da ponderosa
85 Niagara St
Newark, NJ 07105
(973) 344-4484

Off the beaten path in the Ironbound area. Authentic food. Not the greatest looking place, but excellent prices, great paella, and the waiter, Nelson, is amazing. He memorizes everyone's order and has never faltered in the dozen or so times that I've been there.

A short taxi ride from the PATH.

Good place, always seems to be packed too. It's by the Pathmark right?
