Here are the more likely natural disasters that may be in the future of JC - Riots and the plague from all the rice/bread thrown for rats and pigeons to continue their overpopulation.

You don't have to offer dinner to survive as a restaurant. Basic is a good example of that, they only have breakfast and lunch food and they are still open. The food at Nia's was soooo much better. Who cares that they didn't have an espresso machine?! Their breakfast was cheap, prepared well and their regular coffee was good too. I didn't mind their hours, if you can't get your ass out of the house for brunch by 3pm that's your problem.

We bought a condo downtown in 2006. Sold it this November for EXACTLY 10% less. I don't think the downtown market will go much lower. There are still areas of JC that are deteriorating, so perhaps prices will still come down in those areas.

I would never go to the trader joes in the city again. The line there wraps every isle all the way to the enterance of the store. They actually have a person who holds up a sign saying "the line ends here". Then if you want wine, you have to go to a TJ's wine shop next door, wtf is that? Why can't the wine shop be combined with the rest of the store? The selection at Edgewater and Westfield is much better. Eff their city stores. Besides, I'd much rather stick the groceries in the trunk of my car then lug the bags onto a rush hour path train.

I would call the BB anyway and explain the situation. Why didn't the plumber tell you that there's blockage and that he needed to dig up the concrete 6 months ago? I'm sure the situation hasn't changed since then. So instead of doing the correct job the 1st time, he decided to charge you twice. That's not right, I would definitely report them. These guys aren't struggling. This past year, the city hooked them all up with 12K-20K jobs installing useless backflow preventers.

Your options on nightlife:

LITM - used to be a cool place to hang, but then they changed their prices and added an extensive bar menu. Now it's an overpriced pseudo-Hoboken bar with a gallery.

Lucky 7's - cheap drinks, loud drunks, frat boy/hipster mix. Smells like a foot locker.

Iron Monkey - great if you like to hang around corporate d-bags that smoke cigars on the roof deck.

Lampost - only slightly classier then the Latin Lounge across the street.

White Star - cheap eats on Wed, but the regulars are always yelling at whatever sports they are watching on Tv.

Golden Cicada - some people swear by this little "secret" bar on here, I don't see what all the hype is about. The place is always empty, and whatever you do don't go to into that bathroom.

Occasionally, gallery 58 hosts a cool party, where you can dance.

JC totally lacks on places to go dancing - that's sad.

I would call back the plumber that charged you 1k to snake your pipes and demand that he install a sump pump free of charge unless he wants to be reported to the better business bureau. He failed to do a job you hired him to do, he should return and fix it until its done right.

Just doing my best to be politically correct so people don't jump down my throat and throw "racist" around. It's so much easier for people do call others racist rather than addressing the actual problem and admitting the truth.

I have a problem when people misuse the word racist. It gives racism a bad name and takes the strength out of the content of it's character.

Two historic examples are blacks? status in the US as less than fully human to justify enslaving them (you can?t own a human but you can own property ? see the Supreme Court?s Dred Scott decision).

Wow, you really had to take it there and blow sh*t totally out of proportion. Don't fret! No one wants to enslave these d-bags. The average 750 sq ft condo in JC is reserved for useful property, like furniture!

I used to work at the Laura Mercier counter at Saks in Short Hills Mall. We had plenty of minority clientele, all super classy people. Matter of fact, Lauren Hill once bought every shade of lipstick at the Armani counter. Robinson Cano used to shop there and actually dated one of the girls in my department.
What you see at Newport is ghetto trash not because they are black, but because they are dumb and poor. Lower socio-economic status tends to breed this sort of behavior. I never shopped there and now I don't have to, because Bridgewater mall is right around the corner. Unfortunately, had to sit through a really annoying fight between a couple during the "devils rejects" at Newport theatre. All kinds of name-calling, teeth sucking, finger snapping and other hostilities that an "urban romance" entails.

15%-20% is absurd. YOu're not getting the service of a server nor the ambiance of dining at a restaurant. They are delivering most items within a 5 mile radius (more like 1 mile actually). No need to tip more then $3-4 bucks.
If it's a small order that totals around $15, I would tip $2 at most.

Sometimes quality of life is worth taking a financial hit for. We lost 40K when we sold our condo.
The good news is that if you buy another place right away, you really aren't taking a loss. The market is down everywhere. You just have to sell and buy in the same market. The mortgage rates are pretty sweet right now too.
Test the waters and put your place on the market - spring is near. If you don't get a desirable offer you don't have to go anywhere.

I'm just surprised at myself. I am truly ready to give up. The fight is gone.

The latest property tax hike has me so incredibly cynical. I received an article from a friend who lives in Northern Canada highlighting how the most corrupt place in the United States is where I live, Jersey City, NJ. We have the worst reputation for paying off our officials. Reputable builders and contractors don't want to work in this area because of the city's reputation for manipulation, corruption and disorganization, pay-off's. Even two state judges I've encountered say you don't want to mess with Jersey City because of their reputation of being corrupt.

Doesn't that mean, anywhere else is better? If I can't trust my hard earned money going to anything I pay for, if I'm paying MORE taxes for this type of corruption to occur, how can I feel confident living here anymore? I honestly feel done. I feel like they've won. I want to live somewhere where I trust my government is doing the job my taxes pay for. I'm not naive, but I'm just used to living where the system works for the citizens a little more than ours.

I can't believe it's 2010 and we are still putting politicians in jail.

It's okay to give up, no one should have to live in a place that they despise. I couldn't stand living in JC anymore. It took 8 months of feeling trapped while trying to sell my place. It felt great to bounce out of there in November...FREEDOM! Now I kind of miss having topics to bitch about. Good luck.

I understand that affluence doesn't always beget class, but I still think that overall, North NJ has both more affluence and more "class" than Central NJ.

The only portions of Central NJ that really exude class, in my opinion, are the northern portions of Monmouth County (Rumson, Navesink, Fair Haven, Colts Neck, Holmdel), about 70% of Somerset County, and the immediate Princeton area.

In Northern NJ, you've got almost ALL of Bergen County north of Route 4, about 80% of Morris County, the entire western half of Essex County, and much of Union County like Westfield, Cranford, Summit, Scotch Plains, Berkley Heights, New Providence, etc ... all of those areas are beautiful and the people there are generally friendly and "classy" (ugh classy is a terrible word).

I went to high school in New Providence...Union county is definitely central jersey. Other CENTRAL jersey towns include Summit, Scotch Plains, Berkeley Heights, Watchung, Warren, Bedminster, Far Hills, Bernardsville, Gladstone, Pottersville, Tewksberry, Madison and Peapack.
North Jersey are Passaic, Bergen, Hudson, Essex and parts of Morris county.
Monmouth cty would definitely be lumped with South Jersey.

You can't just OMIT central jersey. That's one of the few parts that gives this state class.

I disagree. While much of Central NJ does indeed have "class" (I hate that word by the way), MORE of Northern NJ has "class", in my opinion.

Much of Bergen (particularly Northern Bergen County), Morris, Essex and Union Counties are very, very affluent.

Ah and that's because Morris, Essex and Union Counties are CENTRAL jersey. Ask anyone who lives there what part of jersey they belong to, they will concur.
Add Somerset and Hunterdon to that and you've got a winner.

Bergen is for the trashy nouveau riche housewives of NJ. (Upper Saddle River aside)

Leave JC and move to Bedminster. You can leave your doors unlocked and wake up to birds chirping. No litter, no higher taxes, no backflow preventers or sketchy parts of town (they are all nice!)...the longer commute is a small price to pay.

Muslims who can afford to do so sacrifice their best domestic animals (usually sheep, but also camels, cows and goats) as a symbol of Ibrahim's sacrifice.
Eid al-Adha is celebrated annually on the 10th day of the month of Dhul Hijja (happens to be our 12th month) of the lunar Islamic calendar.

I bet this is how sheep ended up in JC. Glad they were rescued. Every religion as some point had a custom of sacrifice, some however, just refuse to let theirs evolve.

The insurance company (if it even does cove this) needs to stop insuring property owners with such animals.

Just last week in Nutley there was another pit bull attack on two people and a dog:

"Headquarters responded to a dog that was attacking several people in the area of Florence Street. A pit bull dog was at large in the neighborhood and attacked another dog while walking with its owner. The dog and two victims were bit by the aggressive animal and had to be treated for their injuries. The pit bull was secured and taken into quarantine by police. The owner was issued summons for dog at large and vicious dog."

This is sort of like linking articles of murders committed by two different people of the same race. Two completely different, isolated incidents. That's pretty asinine GrovePath.

I walk dogs, most of whom are pits at LHS in my spare time. Never once have I felt threatened by any of them, nor did they give me reason to. Until I volunteered there, I felt the same way as you about pits and rottweilers.
The problem isn't with the dogs, but their owners. Many residents in urban areas should have a license to have pets. Look at the behavior of some of the children that attend schools in JC. And then you wonder why there are so many pets who were raised to be aggressive.
I have heard of some real shitty reasons for adopting animals from the locals. This is embedded in the culture of some of these people and there is not much you can do to change it.
I've seen Indians and Pakistanis come in to try and adopt cats. They didn't even bother looking at them! They use them for a short period of time to catch mice in their residence and then they most likely end up in the street.
One of the mothers brought in her 3 year old daughter to pick out a kitten. She told us she didn't want to have it neutered because she was adopting it to teach her daughter about "the circle of life". This idiot was going to make this cat reproduce to teach how living things have babies! Get an effin book moron!
Thug kids roll in on a regular basis to adopt dogs for "protection". (I'm sure there are plenty who don't naively state the truth).
The point is, it's silly to blame household pets for being aggressive. The owners of these dogs should be charged with attempted murder. Dogs don't just spontaneously charge at people with the intent to kill unless the owner condones such behavior.
