Heard this on the news this morning. Didn't know the guy was from JC. Well, I guess we finally did something worthy of reporting on WNYC.

Something to make it easier to paste photos into posts would be good. Those of us with weaker skills always have trouble with this.

Well I used to enjoy watching the rabbits run around in the big field which is now an anonymous office building at 570 Washington Blvd, but all good things must come to an end...

Probably like a lot of other people on this board, I was standing on the waterfront in JC (right next to Starbucks) when the WTC collapsed. I can tell you that nobody was cheering, Muslim or otherwise. In fact, nobody had a single word to say when those buildings came down. I find the whole conversation Trump started pretty disgusting.

Re: Montessori School on 17 Erie Street is NOT a Montessori School !!

My daughter attended this school briefly when she was a toddler (years ago under the previous director). We had challenges, as you would in any school, but none related to whether or not it was a "real" Montessori school.

Questions; if the name Montessori is in the public domain, what makes the American Montessori Society any more an arbiter of what a real Montessori school is than the director of this individual Montessori school?

What if this one is more like a real Montessori school than those that are members of AMS?

I think the only lesson to draw here is that you need to visit any school you are thinking of putting your kids into and evaluate it for yourself.

Give Castro Refrigeration a shot. We've used them for washer/dryer issues and had good experiences. Don't have their number handy but a web search yielded (201) 435-0492.

I hate to say it, but unless you're willing to pay $15-20/lb (or even more for things like wild copper river salmon), then you probably should not be eating fish these days. Anything cheaper is probably not sustainably sourced. Just the way it is.

I'd rather support this store, if their sourcing is sound, than go to Shop-rite and eat tilapia farmed in Vietnam or Honduras under very questionable conditions.

Price to be paid for decades of overfishing.

What is downtown Maplewood's anchor store? And who sponsored this "contest?" Hint, the answer is the same.

Nice tip, Brewster. I'll have to get a nut milk bag (the other stuff I have). Actually, since I posted, I've been getting my fix with a strong Aeropress brew over a glass full of ice cubes. Sugar goes in with the ice so the hot coffee dissolves it a bit, top off with 1/2 n 1/2 and viola.

Re: Early Morning Run

I generally run at about 5:00 am on weekdays. During months when it's totally dark then I normally stick to DT and the waterfront area, but when there is some light I run other routes for hills, etc.

I often run on the street, left side facing traffic and close to the outer edge. Sidewalks around here can be very uneven, full of cracks and dark. It's also a bit easier to get a clear view of an intersection from the street. If the street is narrow and cars are coming I'll hop on the sidewalk.

My opinion is that it's generally pretty safe to run early but you have to exercise normal caution. Don't run in areas you're not familiar with or where there are no lights. Don't wear headphones (not even in broad daylight). Do wear reflective gear and carry lights if it's dark. Never assume a car is going to stop, signal, move out of your way, or do anything to avoid you. Just give every car or truck as wide a berth as you can.

Cold Brew Coffee

Anyone know where I can get cold brew coffee by the bottle in JC, preferably DT?

Love the New Orleans style from Rook, but they are confined to Monmouth County for now.

That is a bent street sign post that has artfully been turned into a sculptural rendering of an exotic potted plant. It's actually been there for years, not months. At this point I think the city has forgotten about it, or else it is so well disguised that they have not been able to locate the post to fix it.

I think it's faded now - needs refreshing.

I think it's a function of 3 factors: how hard the ice cream you want is, whether the server uses the small scoop or the big paddle and how tired her/his arm is at the time you order.

Go early, order from the softer gelato case and insist on the paddle. You'll get a huge cone for sure!

Just took the survey. I agree that it's a bit leading - this study would never pass peer review ;)

At any rate, the new design is better overall, but they should be able to find a way of keeping the old fountain. Even if they have to move it, there's got to be room there somewhere.

I've done this 5K the last 3 years. The organizers do a good job running it and it's a fun race. Also, the course is beautiful. Flat and very fast, too, if you're looking for a new PR. Definitely recommend it.

Yeah I liked the old Hamilton Park Ale House, I feel like the Hamilton Inn is such a sterile experience in comparison.

I have heard a lot about Downtown Eddie's and I wish I was around to enjoy it. Sushi Tango is not a place I frequent; I imagine it would be a great place for the neighborhood bar that Downtown Eddie's was.

+1 for Maggie's old Ale House. Wife and I met there 17 years ago.

Hamilton Park Tree Removal

Anyone know what's going on with the crew cutting down trees in Hamilton Park this week? It looks like there are a lot of trees with white "X" marks painted on them. I hope they are being removed for a good reason - it's a lot of old timber to be cutting down.

If I remember correctly, it doesn't really matter. The permit is good for one year from when you purchase it. If you replace your permit early, you just waste a few pennies on the overlapping validity.

I could be mistaken but that's my recollection. Call the JCPA 201-653-6969

Re: Speed bump between 8th and 9th on Erie.

First drive over the Erie St. hump this morning (odd since I live right near it). At first I thought people were overreacting but, hehe, that particular one really is clownishly big. It's far larger than the other ones even on the same street.

I did get over it just fine in a Prius but I drove over it really really slow.

I'm all in favor of traffic calming systems, but I think just this one hump does need a little shave. It would still work fine if it was like the others.

BTW there was a PIX 11 news truck parked right next to it this morning, so I guess our speed humps are making the news now.

I think the "speed bump" on Jersey between 8th and 9th is called Hamilton Park. Maybe that's the problem.

It won't get any better when they actually put in the speed bumps. Have you seen the one on Jersey between 8th and 9th st? If you were a complete moron this is how you would make a speed bump. Number one, there are no permanent markings to indicate the it's there (yellow hashes, signs or otherwise). Number two, the thing is the largest bump I've ever seen! I have an SUV and I was worried about bottoming out on this thing! It. is. HUGE! You can tell by all the scars on it that many people have already bottomed out on it. Also, they put up a couple cones so they must have finally realized it's an issue. I'm all for speed bumps but there is a right way and a wrong way and this is so wrong. If the idea is to launch a vehicle doing 30 MPH 3 feet in the air then this is perfect! Idiots!

It does sound annoying, but you really can't have a streetcar/tram without bells of some kind. We'd be dealing with a lot of injured pedestrians otherwise. How do you think the Brooklyn Dodgers got their name?
