Re:- Food Donations Needed

Grace Community Services (2nd and Erie) takes food donations and help with the breakfast for the hungry program- saturdays and sundays 7am-9am- we serve a hot breakfast - eggs, sausage, grits, potatoes, pb&j, cereal and more. cook, clean, serve, or donate goods. we always need boxes of au gratin potatoes, and they are pretty cheap at shop rite or bjs.

i actually think this will help. if drug dealers move to your porch, then you can call the police about trespassing, and you have a better view to give more accurate info when you do call. and there are not enough police to be there 24/7. there are benches still inside the park, they are just discussing removing the ones on the outside of the park as i understand it. lighting has been/is being addressed from what i heard at the last meeting.
and i believe most drug dealing arrests near the park that i have heard about have been for heroin and cocaine, not pot. and i don't think anyone is suggesting we legalize those.

I live by Liberty State Park light rail in Lafayette, and the closest post offices to me are now the main one downtown, or the one on bergen. i don't have a car, and i work a 9-5er plus the time it takes to commute to and from. So if i want to utilize a post office, i either have to go downtown on saturday and wait in line, or take time out of my workday to use a post office in the town i work in. Most people in neighborhoods in jersey city have a post office you can walk to in their neighborhood. It's not my #1 priority, but i would say having a post office nearby can be vital, especially around the holidays. And what if you want a PO Box?

Just a reminder about this crime meeting on November 2. RSVP if you can. This will cover approximately the area from the Liberty State Park Light Rail up to Woodward, and from Johnston to where the light rail tracks intersect with the south end of Pacific Avenue. Basically the parts of Lafayette that are part of the East District Police Department. Hope to see everyone there.

I used Sergio from Housemasters twice. One single family and one two-family home. He was thorough. But he didn't have a ladder that allowed him to get access to our roof the second time, and said we would have to get one and have him come back, which we didn't- and ended up replacing the roof later because it was in terrible condition. Lesson learned. I don't know if most inspectors have ladders that go to the top of a third story or not. Other than that, he was extremely thorough, and we had a good idea going in both times what we would need to address in the homes.

Hi concerned-citizen,
there is a neighborhood watch in the area and if you'd like to join, you can email lafayetteblockwatch@comcast.net
Also, there are cameras slated to go into the area as part of the UEZ CCTV program. We have requested cameras at the Dr. Lena Edwards Park, and at the Morris Canal Redevelopment meeting last week, the Captain said he requested even more than just having cameras there, that it would be one of the places that gets put into police cars so that they can monitor the park no matter where they are in the district, which would be great.
Councilwoman Richardson also showed up at the meeting and agreed to work on better lighting situations there and to get signs posted regarding the closing time, no drinking, and dogs must be leashed. So please let us know when you see those go in.
I love that you are calling attention to the issue, and encourage you to continue to do so. The squeaky wheel, ya know.
Please also consider attending the Captain's meetings that happen once a month at the school on Bright Street (Sep 22 this month) and there is a Ward F meeting at the Mary Bethune center on MLK Sep 22 as well.
Thank you for caring about our neighborhood.

It's the park. Dr. Lena Edwards Park. On Johnston between Pine and Whiton. It has been a terrible summer with the park and residents are doing our best to get someone besides the police to address it. The police respond to calls and arrest people for everything from drugs to shootings there, but no one else in city government wants to help us address it in any real permanent way. We don't have enough police to be parked there 24/7.
If it wasn't for that park i would feel very safe walking to the light rail, Pathmark, etc. And honestly, no one in their right mind would take their children to it with what is happening there. You have a playground at liberty state park a few blocks away, and one a few blocks in the other direction at Lafayette (now Ercel Webb park)- both nice and recently redone.

we moved from a one family to a two family about two years ago. We filed for ours and kept getting notices back about just one more piece of information they need. I finally gave up. The last thing after ten months of back and forth was that they want us to prove how much square footage we occupy as opposed to how much our tenant occupies, which requires some kind of inspection and official piece of paper from some hudson county agency. Forget it. The amount of hours i spent calling and sending copies of stuff is just not worth it.
When we owned a single family however it was very easy and i think we got something like $650 bucks.

If the people in this video are identifiable by police, which it seems you can identify them from the video, can't they still be prosecuted after the fact? I would think at the very least you could identify the youtube account of the person who posted it.
and yes, you can and should flag it if you have a youtube account. and i know they are juveniles and they will be let out of quickly, but guess what- if they are arrested their mug shot goes into a great picture book and then if they beat up a law abiding citizen or they rob them or commit any other crimes at a later date, the victim can pick them out of the great picture book and help police catch them.

It's not just drug dealing. They are also a sign to mark gang territory. You can google reputable sights that help citizens and law enforcement fight gang activity and you should find it. It's like tagging in some places. Regardless of whether you believe that it is a sign of criminal activity, it is certainly a sign of neglect in a neighborhood. Just like trash everywhere and houses that are not kept up, it is a sign that it will be easier to get away with committing crime there.

It's adorable that someone thought he was coming to check on her because he had a conscience. They were charged with witness tampering because they showed up at the hospital worried she might be able to ID them. i think they were hoping she would die so they coudn't be linked to it.

Lafayette, the captain's meetings goes over every crime reported within my neighborhood. I am in the east district, and at the captain's meetings, they go over every crime recorded in my district in the last month, which is what i am most concerned with. While i of course care about jersey city as a greater whole, it is helpful to me to go to go to the east district captain's meetings. You also get more face time in a smaller setting with police. I would encourage everyone to go to their district's meeting. I have been to a caba meeting in the past, and will continue to go when my husband is available to accompany me. Also, i found residents here (as opposed to downtown where we used to live) unwilling to call the police every time there is a problem. With the current system, the more calls you make, the more a zone is considered a hot spot. When we started the phone tree with the downtown watch, it helped a lot. We tried to start one in lafayette, but i think there is more of a stigma here about calling the police. People were also concerned that people causing the crimes and their families would show up to meetings and then residents trying to deter crime would be singled out. That is really a shame.

Honestly though, i wish the meetings were not past pacific, because i won't walk past pacific alone, especially not at night with everything that's been happening. That's why i haven't been going to the CABA meetings. I think most people who live between the light rail and pacific in our neighborhood feel the same way. I try to go to the monthly captain's meetings at Bright street school instead.

I don't quite see how they can sue NJ Transit, because where he was stabbed, as far as i can tell from reports, was not on the lot. Reports said he was getting out of his car on Johnston where he parked on the street (we don't have permit parking, so commuters often park on the streets in the neighborhood). Did i miss something about people reporting the man to the Transit police prior to the incident?

Grace Van Vorst does a breakfast program for the hungry every saturday and sunday morning in the parish hall (erie near 2nd). My husband and i do the third sunday every month and i get more out of it than the people who come to the breakfast do i think. You can help cook, or serve, or wash dishes, whatever your kid is comfortable with. Everyone is pretty laid back and i have signed quite a few forms for kids doing community service for school who come volunteer. It's from 7am to @ 9:15am saturday and sunday. There is a different coordinator for each day and you can just show up that morning and go to the kitchen and introduce yourself.

Re: Jersey City's police chief: (Bergen Lafayette) is not a 'war zone'
#55
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

I live in lafayette, a couple blocks from LSP light rail stop, but it's a different world than living on ocean or mlk. And not because of a racial difference, but many socio economic ones. My neighborhood is very mixed ethnically but what is different is that many places are owner occupied, there is a good mix of old-timers and new residents, and most properties (except for ones that are vacant where owners are waiting til the market improves to unload, or the ones owned by the city or developers who just keep moving rubble from one side to the other) are taken care of, which indicates a sense of pride. Also where i live is still in the east district police dept, where the other places on that hot zone list experiencing these problems are not.
Clearly this problem is layered, but it seems to me that if every night something bad happens on a certain corner, than why isn't there a "hot spot" declared and undercovers there every night. If you arrest enough people at each of these hotspots, they will move their activities elsewhere, and i know the idea is to stop the problem all together, but let's start with where it's happening now. Also, it is sick when you hear that people gathered around the scene and the victim refuse to say anything about what happened. Cooperation between residents and the police is necessary to address crime, no matter how each feels about the other. Also, from reading a lot of the reports of these crimes, the victims and perps of the crimes often don't live where the act happened. Which is also infuriating. Because the chief is probably right about the fact that many of the people who live in these neighborhoods are hard working citizens who just want to be safe.
Whether it's a war zone or not is irrelevant, what matters is that people can't feel safe coming home from a hard day's work, or walking their kids to school. And with the amount of money the city wastes and the taxes we pay, that should not be the case.

Who the f*** do these guys think they are? And it's our fault for not voting every chance we get and DEMANDING better government. I'll never forget how smug and ridiculous some of the councilmembers acted at the "pay to play" council meeting a while back. One guy actually said,
"YOU people (what people, the people who keep your sorry a*s employed?) come to me with your little pet projects (like keeping our streets safe and feeding the homeless)...and where do you think that money comes from? Developers who give us money so they can build here. That's right. No don't boo me."
It makes me sick. Every time i go to the polls i want to vote out every incumbent. YOU people who are double and triple dipping from city and state funds need to go.

not that i am defending abbey's, but there were fights on that street long before that bar opened. that block seemed to attract jerks. we complained about the barge all the time when we lived there, but it never seemed to help. there was always trash & bread all over the sidewalk, shady characters, late night yelling...i don't know if it is just holding on to an old reputation or if it is fueled by the house on the corner being partially boarded up forever or what, but you should get on the neighborhood watch phone list and get a bunch of people to call the police every time something happens...the police will get sick of going to the same place over and over and maybe you can get it cleaned up.

I also live here and love the neighborhood. It much quieter than where i lived downtown and there are many older people who have been here a long time and have a vested interest in the neighborhood. I would not go south past communipaw or west past pacific though. The only draw back is there is only one neighborhood restaurant, Caesars. Though with things moving forward at Gulls Cove and Liberty Harbor i think more restaurants and services will only be one or two stops away on the light rail.

I am just beside myself. We spent thousands of dollars having our roof replaced by Accomplished Chimney and Roofing and as i type this i have water coming in at exactly the same places we had it before. Leaking in our bedroom, our guest room, our office...i called accomplished and left a message with the woman who answered the phone a few hours ago but haven't had a response. I cannot BELIEVE i spent so much money to have the same problem. And it is money i don't have. I really hope they will make this right because the thought of having wasted that money and having to have someone redo the job is horrible.
