By the way how does he know he was shot outside of Montgomery Gardens. Is he trying to say just because he walked passed the projects he was shot there. Whats to say he didn't get shot in a nice section of Jertsey City, is he trying to say they don't have crime in the " yuppie " section. Where was he coming from, I find it difficult to belive that he was just passing by that was a short cut to his house, taking the train to journal square from downtown would just be taking him out of his way.

He is saying that he got shot outside of the projects because that is where he felt the pain in his knee.

Maybe he was grazed by the bullet...

It's a shame that the activities in these projects are such a blight on Downtown. They will really dampen development in that area.

You should also check out

http://redandtan.com

Their buses run along Kennedy Boulevard which is a fairly short walk for you. The 99s goes to Port Authority and the 10 goes to Journal Square.

You are also near the Neptune Bakery, right on the corner of Neptune and the Boulevard, which has awesome custard tarts which I was fortunate enough to be treated to recently.

I saw someone bring something up about race. Please do not go there. In fact, every black person I asked, including a woman whose father lives across the street from where I was considering, told me I was crazy. However, they are from Jersey City and I am as well, so I wanted an "outsider's" opinion as I thought it would be less biased. I grew up in downtown and although I have always loved it, I cannot afford it for starters, but I wanted more space and this place had it and at a price within my budget. I knew it would be a tradeoff, but my safety is ultimately worth more. Thanks again.

You were the one that went there first in the headline of your post... If you don't see that then clearly you are not very observant and need to get that skill worked on before you consider buying a place. Fact is that it is a high crime area in Jersey City. I know that you feel that asking black people in the neighborhood makes you feel like your validated yourself but that just brings race into again by suggesting that the area is safe for black people but not for whites.

I'm quite sure that many of the black people that live there don't want to as evidenced by their comments to you. In any event, if you wanted an honest answer, you could have easily walked yourself over to the West District PD which is on Communipaw and they could give you the crime states for that neighborhood.

It's ridiculous to call Trenton the next Hoboken ... but give Trenton a break. It is not one big ghetto. I lived there for 2 years in the Chambersburg section 1995-97 when I worked at the Statehouse, and I loved it. Trenton has a thriving jazz scene (Try Joe's Mill Hill Saloon) and some of the best Italian restaurants/eateries, among others, in the Northeast. Little by little, Trenton, which got its arse kicked during the riots/white flight of the 60's, is coming back to life. In fact my good friend is very bullish on Trenton. A few years ago he purchased a rundown 3-story row house and garage near the renovated Broad Street Bank building. After months of rehab, he turned the property around. The garage now houses his recording studio which doubles as a sort-of social club where Trentonians of all stripes get together to hear or play music - and party.

What's the name of that great Italian restaurant in Chambersberg?

I also love the area near Caldawader (sp?) Park

There are some beautiful old homes that run along side it.

If you have a NJ monthly transit pass you can take the Amtrak train that runs on the Northeast Corridor line. There are only 3 stops (New Brunswick, Metropark, Newark) in between Trenton and New York

Regardless, you're right in that it is smarter marketing to align it with Philly.

There are some nice neighborhoods in Trenton. It's been about 4 years since I've spent any time there. However, there's a street near the waterfront that has really beautiful historic row homes with good bones.

I've been to the Embankment 2-3 times for dinner and once for happy hour.

The service was great each and every time. Our servers were really attentive and made great recommendations for our entrees.

I really enjoyed the lobster that was on the initial menu. I hope that they bring that back.

This place has a really great vibe and I think that it's a great place to hang out. While I like Ox, I find that the Embankment offers a more welcoming atmosphere. I feel comfortable lounging there and chatting with friends over a few drinks.

Oh and Chad... how can anyone take your opinion seriously when you can't even properly identify the type of eating establishment it is?

Don't you think that you're being absolutist and rigid? I don't understand why we're not allowed to question politicians.

I think it's great that Steve chooses to use his forum to speak with his constituents. Plus, it gives people outside of his ward access to his initiatives and policies.

However, if he does something that is contrary to what he presented during his campaign then people deserve a valid explanation as to why there was a strategic shift. Maybe when he reads the dissenting view on this thread, it will give him something to think about when future abatements votes happen.

And the way you throw Bush around is like comparing apples and licorice. Last I checked, he and his supporters didn't welcome open debate.

Amazon- Gang Leader for A Day Although this book isn't specific to Montgomery Gardens, it gives an insightful look at what life was like for blacks living in some of Chicago's worst projects. I'd imagine that you'd be able to draw a lot of similarities.

alb I think that you might enjoy it specifically because it answers much of what you ask above.

We all have our quirks, and, even if he's wrong about demographic stuff, maybe he has reasonable views about grocery stores or restaurants or something like that.

I looked at a house on Arlington about 4-5 years ago before landing where I am now. There are some nice houses on that street with some great views of the city.

What I would suggest doing is going to the area at different times of day and night to see if you are comfortable with the area. Specifically, Id go by after school lets out and later into the evening and night. If you have the chance, try to go on a day when its warmer out.

See what kind of vibe you get. That's really the most important thing.

Good luck.

If you like Freakonomics, you should check out Gang Leader For a Day by Sudhir Venkatesh. I'd also recommend it for any fans of the Wire.

His U of C research study was covered in the Freakonomics chapter on why drug dealers still live with their mothers. The book expands on his work at U of C and elaborates on gang life in the 90s in Chicago.

It was a really quick read for me.
