Jersey City has a lot of foreign nationals, who dont fill out the census. Until the census accurately reflects how wealthy JC is, Whole Foods will continue to overlook us.

Anyone know a good place? Ideally, no more than an hour away and not more expensive than buying at a supermarket. Thanks.

Jersey ave is right on the boundary of Ward E and F. So, the
east side is ward E and the west side is F?

For those of you saying we should ask our own council person to take care of Jersey Ave ...

Plenty of ward E residents use Jersey Ave to get to Liberty State Park, so technically you could even consider it an entrance to a park, which seems to be a special designation in Ms Osborne's plan.

Just last week someone was hit by a car on the corner of Jersey and Grand.

There are no stop signs or traffic lights between Grand and Montgomery, so cars and buses are often speeding down Jersey, which often surprise me just as I am crossing Grand.

I doubt Diane Coleman (ward F) will do anything for our small downtown section, without the rest of her ward complaining of special downtown treatment. I think the rest of ward F is more car oriented, I rarely see people walking around, the way i see people do here in downtown.

That stuff is peanuts compared to what Christie is going to do to your wallet. His main agenda is to cut taxes for the suburbs and give less aid to the cities.

Here's a small sample from his website:

On affordable housing:
"Chris will gut COAH and instead encourage the redevelopment of quality housing in our cities and transit centers." ---> Keep the poor out of our suburbs, put them back in the cities = more social ills and taxes for us.

On education: "Our current government simply throws money at the problem ..." --> Cut funding to schools = more taxes for us.

Christie is pro suburb and business interests. Corzine is not my ideal, but Christie will screw the cities, the environment and education.

With the possibility of Chris Christie becoming our next governor, I'm expecting huge aid cuts to JC and huge tax increases ahead for us. I want people competent enough to handle the difficult times ahead and I am not impressed with any of the incumbents.

I'm for the new guys, Tom Wilen, Moshe Rozenblit, and Eric Goldsmith.

I've been to LSC twice and each time it was nowhere near as crowded as the NY museums, like Natural History. The families I know in NY also know about LSC but have yet to make the trip. Meanwhile they have rented cars, taken public transportation trying to shorten their 2 hour trip to the Bronx zoo multiple times. Somehow there is a much bigger psychological barrier in crossing the Hudson than crossing the East River.

If you have kids, you'll know that zoos and science museums are big attractions, there's no reason why LSC should not be flooded with visitors, hence money for improvements.

The problem is that you 8 million people (not to mention the tourists) living across the river but not going to LSC. Unless they've been to JC, these people have no idea how easy it is to take the Path and then Light Rail. And they are certainly not going to make this scary trip with their kids.

What LSC needs to do, as IKEA already figured out, is to provide free shuttle from Manhattan.

Despite all your criticism, LSC is still nicer than any science museum NYC has (the one in Queens is a joke in comparison) and a lot of New Yorkers would go if it were easier.

While you do have to pay NJ state tax, a big plus of JC is you don't have to pay NYC income tax (which is pretty big, on top of NY state tax.)

Actually, you only have to pay NJ state taxes on income you earned in NJ (eg interest, capital gains). If you work in NY, you pay NY state taxes and get credit for it in NJ. So you are NOT double taxed by NY and NJ. As mentioned above, you also don't have to pay NY city taxes if you live in JC. The annoying thing is having to file both NY and NJ taxes.

If you've been paying both NY and NJ state taxes, you should get an accountant to clear that up.

I should add that in addition to the negatives there are positives living next to a school.

1. The security cameras have, I believe, improved the safety. Before the school, that area was one of the worst in downtown.

2. When the kids go to and get off school, there are police and crossing guards everywhere so I have not seen vandalism or any of the things I thought would happen. And they go in and out of the school pretty quickly, so you only hear them goofing around briefly. If you like kids, it can be a pleasant sound.

3. When you have a concern, the city seems to respond pretty quickly when you say it's right next to the school (i.e. kids will be hurt, someone will get in trouble if they don't do something about it.) I've heard of two useful pieces of legislation regarding schools, though I have no idea how well executed: pedophiles cannot live near a school and the air/water quality around/in a school are supposed to be tested. Unfortunately, PS 3 was tested to have lead in the water, so what does that say about our water? PS 3 is new and presumably have new pipes.

As for the area, though a long way off, the colony strip mall there is supposed to spruced up, starting with the Bates Project (on Bates St/Grand).

So, the area is fine. I'd worry about the flooding though.

Talk is cheap. How many of you voted at the Board of Ed election last week? At closing of the polls, I found out only 60 people voted at ps 3, which I think included 3 districts in ward E.

Christ! a lot more people than that voted for the dog run at Hamilton Park. And this election was so much more important for our taxes, our children, our city. Needless to say, the one candidate who spoke competently at the debate lost, because she was not endorsed by the Machine. Does the board of ed have to dangle a dog run in front of you guys to get you to go and vote?

My spouse was quick to call this a Jersey problem, too, and claimed NYC is a large, more civilized city and such a thing would never happen there. So, I looked it up and found indeed it happened. Except, they never released the names of the schools or the level of the lead (to avoid outrage and law suits, I guess.) Their solution was to flush the systems periodically.

When I heard of Steve's 5% proposal, I thought, wow, Steve might have a good chance of winning the mayorship if he gets this passed.

Did he knows this? -- Yes.

Was it the right thing to do? -- Yes

Did the rest of the council know this? --Yes.

Was it the right thing to shortchange children the measly 5% for political reasons? -- No.

Healy publicly claimed he supported the proposal but of course, did not have to actually vote on it. He even claims he had the idea first, but has he actually done anything about it? --NO

Shame on you, Healy and gang (and Corzine, too) for not recognizing that you can't have a great state without a great CITY (ie. not suburb) and you can't have a great city without great public education. Compare that to what Bloomberg is doing in NYC for education and poverty.

May you never be disillusioned in your trust. But based on my own and my family's experience with doctors, I put them them one level above lawyers in my list of "scumbags who put their own interests above their clients/patients." (Let's just say there were unnecessary medications and operations with one relative, a near-death with another, and a dead fetus with another.)

They may have more medical knowledge, but don't confuse that with more concern for your health. For example, did you know that the way drug companies sell their drugs is via doctors? As a "consultant" for the drug, the doctor gets a kickback for the prescriptions they make. The next time your doctor tries to push a drug on you, ask if they're a consultant for the drug.

Okay, I've digressed from the original discussion of vaccines a bit. But my point is that the medical profession has other interests, like making more money, elevating their status and profession, that may be detrimental to our health. The more vaccinations you have to get, the more easy-money they make.

Okay, it's not so black-and-white, but in general, their approach with vaccinations these days is "safe until proven unsafe." With patients, it's "load them up, cut them up, until it's too dangerous."

The medical profession is currently in an uproar over walk-in clinics. Does that mean walk-in clinics are bad for our health-- as they claim? No, it only threatens to take away their patients.

That must have been the paper they handed out for free at the Pathmark right before the election. It had a picture of Cunningham and Obama on the cover, obviously taken at the Obama fundraiser, where he would take pictures with anyone contributing to his campaign. It deceitfully implied that Obama endorses Cunningham. As furious as I was at the false advertising, I assumed it was paid for with Healy's machine money, I had no idea I was paying for it with my tax dollars.

How much more of this crap do we have to endure? What does that faker DavidKake have to say about Fulop now, compared to the rest of the garbage we have in City Hall?

Also, I've stayed in corporate housing for a month. I behaved like a tourist, eating out everyday and checking out all the entertainment the area provided. Though, being so close to Manhattan, they might take all their tourist dollars there instead.

With gentrification, first comes the gays, then the dogs, then the children. We are currently at the brink between dogs and children.

Should downtown be so advanced someday that families are willing to have children here, we will look at the parks and be puzzled by why more money was spent on the bigger dog run than the smaller, much more crowded playground, as in Van Vorst Park. Will Hamilton Park go to the dogs too?

Ps. I have nothing against dogs, but I doubt any dog will sameday be our future leader or pay taxes or support me in my old age. (Ok,ok, a few exceptionals ones will be able to bring me the phone, when I fall down and break my hips.)

What's more important here - the safety, welfare and enjoyment for children / humans or dogs?

Why not look for an empty block or disused piece of land and convert it into a stictly dog run use only.
You have empty space right along and under the turnpike to create some 'kick-ass' space for dogs.
For example, what about even asking the owners of the shoprite carpark to allow some space there for a larger dogrun - it could be located near those charity bins?

As for Manzo, I'm wary of him, but he has been responsible for sponsoring alot of bills I agree with. He has experience and gumption, much more than I can say for Ms Cunningham.

I am mostly voting against Ms Cunningham, her incompetence, the Democratic machine, and their offensive assumption that I would be so stupid as to blindly vote column A just because they said so or because she has the same last name as someone I voted for in the past.

You should go and vote Tuesday to let them know they can't count on low voter turnout to win an election and to demand a better candidate next time than the crackerjack they've given us this time.
