This question was worth 5 points and would have put NJ past Ohio and into tenth place. But what about the other 57.2 points? Not getting those also cost NJ. If they could have made up the blown five points elsewhere, this blunder would not have mattered. There's plenty of blame to go around.

hmm. you seem to be saying that an obvious, stupid mistake (reading comprehension) that causes the application to lose a huge grant is not any more blameworthy than other parts of the application where points may have been lost, such as parts that reflect policy-based choices.

these are not equivalent at all. the policy-based choices would have been fine, apparently, if the administration had been more careful. so, why not hold the administration solely responsible for this fiasco?

CC, you seem to know what you are talking about, yet wasn't NJ only a few points from being in the money? from the reports it sounds as though, if the correct numbers had been used, NJ would have been in the money. but i think you've said that's incorrect, that the budget fiasco alone would not have made the difference. have i stated your position accurately?

Feel compelled to point out that littering (be it by kids or adults) is not normal, ordinary behavior that everyone should just buck up about and accept as a result of urban living.

People who litter suck. It's ok to complain about them, even if complaining alone won't change their behavior. Because complaining might, for instance, rally people enough to make the situation a priority, and embolden people to say something when they see something--peer pressure is a good thing for civic pride.

i believe that the sprinklers have been temporarily shut down due to some injuries. no info on what exactly happened or when they will re-open, but there appears to be a good reason they're not operating right now.

"hooligans" is a nice, generic, and laid-back term to refer jackasses of any race, creed or color. if you find the word suggestive, check your own preconceptions. BB players in public parks may or may not be hooligans, but in JC the odds favor it.

frustration with hooligans on a BB court is totally understandable...but there is no good solution...it's there, it's not going away, and there's no realistic "enforcement" mechanism that a democratic society should accept to monitor use of a public park during normal park hours. patrols through the area? sure. see someone littering? fine them--yay. see brawls? take appropriate action. but this should be happening already...

on a related note, has anyone noticed an uptick in rude behavior of late? maybe it's because i'm a new parent and am just paying more attention, but the other day in the downtown area experienced back to back to back examples of ridiculously asinine and uncouth behavior.

viz, the parking spot i was waiting for was 'stolen' by another car. the driver just casually looked at me as i explained i'd been waiting, and then rolled up his tinted windows and sat there until i got tired of telling him how much bad karma he was incurring. later in the day, walked to the bagel store and witnessed a near collision on columbus/jersey, as the passenger of the offending car (who was simply asking to be t-boned) lazily gave the finger to the car that managed to slam on the brakes and prevent the crash, and then sped away. then, while walking in vvp and passing the dog run, witnessed a dog attack another dog while the 'innocent' dog's owner tried frantically to get her dog away and the 'aggressive' dog's owner sat on a bench for several seconds just shouting at his dog (finally got up and walked over).

the absence of civility is just ridiculous.

the counter-point to the above is that the volunteers in vvp and parkman did (as always) an AWESOME job yesterday, and reminded me that there are plenty of generous folk in the area. thank you!

Anyone know what happens to the health insurance of employees of a charter school that gets shut down (e.g., CREATE)?

Since there is no longer an employer, there would not be a plan to continue under COBRA, I'd think. But maybe a district plan is available, or something? Anyone have constructive thoughts on the topic? Would be appreciated.

(and yes, the school admins are probably the best source to ask, but maybe someone on this board knows?)

Although I have never been on unemployment, from people around me, I know the process is too easy. After all, you are getting money, you have nothing else to do, it should be harder than filling out a simple form and calling in once in a while and speaking to a machine where you press the same digits each time.

I have a friend who has been on unemployment for about a month over a year now. Each time he says he will start looking, he gets money in the mail, so why look for work.

Yes! Because living on < $20,000/yr is the high and enviable life.

But you are likely mistaken in any event. The person who files has to certify that he is actively looking for work. At least that's the NY system and NJ is likely similar. To collect unemployment you can't just sit back and punch some numbers, at least if you do not want to commit fraud. This distinction likely will not impress you, as you seem to feel in your gut that the unemployed are generally lazy, unmotivated free-riders gaming the system.

Granted, it is pretty easy to commit this kind of fraud. Maybe your real complaint is that you would like some kind of oversight or verification system that monitors people and insures that they are telling the truth beyond their personal certification. Once you develop that system, I'm sure you could sell it to the CIA and FBI and make a bundle, so best of luck with it.

It is encouraging to have the initiative make it this far. The legalization debate is not rational, and by that I mean it is utterly irrational to argue against decriminalization at the least. But at this point, I suspect there is far, far too much money to be made by keeping the laws on the books than by changing them. At my most cynical, I suspect that successful drug dealers/czars/whatever-they're-called have plenty of politicians on the payroll whose job it is to be outspoken about beefing up enforcement, not giving in to the criminals, and accusing anyone who wants to rethink the drug laws of being a pinko liberal traitor. What a mess.

You are not alone. I recently learned that some of my mail was being delivered to the wrong address (correct street number, but incorrect street!). only learned this because the person at the wrong address was diligent enough to track me down and let me know. unbelievable to me how poor the post office is in jersey city. never experienced anything like it. another example: i've recently moved to a larger building in downtown jc where the mail carrier has twice (in just one month) simply dropped the entire building's mail on the floor in front of the mailboxes and not bothered to sort.
