Oh, ye of little faith! With the mayoral election coming up, we can certainly expect a number of street repaving projects to occur in the next two months.

It's the same layout as Made With Love, with small tables in the front and along the length of the store. I believe they are using the same old church pews for seating along the wall. Stopped in yesterday around 6pm and picked up a baguette. Price was $2.70, found it comparable to those from Marco & Pepe and Rustique.

Until somewhat recently, the images on Google Maps still showed the pre-Grove Pointe overview for the Grove PATH Plaza. If you install Google Earth, you can see historical images to get an idea of what things looked at other time periods. Most of the older satellite images are rather low-resolution, but the 2004 pictures give a pretty clear view of the buildings that were there before:
Download the application here: http://www.google.com/earth/ Oh, also... looking back at the Stinky Bridge, you can see some of the iterations of it over time, all the way up to the current view of it washed up on the shore. Kind of sad.

I'll believe it. The Pulaski Skyway is certainly due for repair and it seems they are waiting for the years of construction on the Turnpike Extension and the Newark Bay Bridge to finally be completed. It's a shame that we can't have both open completely at the same time, but I suppose there aren't a lot of other options.
I am glad that the Skyway will still be open for outbound traffic, but it will be annoying to cough up $2.45 for the toll to come back from central Jersey every day. Also posted here: http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/ ... and-Tunnel-186249242.html

Okay, let's put the issue of the $1 for cell phone charging to bed, shall we? It makes me sick to see people who know nothing about what ACTUALLY happened say that it's a good thing to see this cafe closed.
Made With Love lost power for several days during Sandy. The owner lost power at her home for over a week and had her car destroyed as well. Most of the food had to be tossed at great expense, and the owner was denied insurance coverage for any of the loss. So we're already looking at a difficult situation here, right? She managed to find a generator that would allow her to get power back in the cafe and open for some minimal amount of business. At the time, she received advice to ask for donations to help cover the cost of the generator and fuel. Looking back, yes, this was probably a poor decision. However, I don't believe anyone was turned away if they did not have any money to help defray the costs. The owner was in an extremely difficult situation, stuck in a home with no power herself and no transportation. She was only asking for help to defray the cost of running the generator. In the end, Sandy played no small part in the closing of the Cafe. And yet, cowards on this board accuse her of "profiting" from Sandy somehow? Personally, I will greatly miss Made With Love and the positive influence it had on the neighborhood.

You're going to come in here and bash all of downtown's pizza, and you've only tried the cheapest places (and only delivery, at that)?
My favorite pizza downtown is at Rustique, no question. However, the pies at the new Roman Nose on Newark Ave are excellent. Have heard great things about Razza on Grove St as well, but have yet to try them.

+1.
I recently got a new vision prescription and was considering Warby Parker for online glasses (their deal is $95 for everything.) I decided to visit Optical Express to see if they could provide a comparable offer. David ended up helping me find a pair of designer eyeglasses, and also threw in a pair of prescription sunglasses for $200 total. Amazingly, they were ready in about 24 hours! I feel confident knowing I can get local service and adjustments if necessary.

Those photos of the damage at LSP are intense. How about the computer monitor next to the 9/11 memorial--did that wash in from the river? I hope it just came from the old RR terminal or something... if people are disposing of CRTs in the Hudson, I weep for humanity.
Oh, and as far as what views are ruined by that horrific memorial? How about this one, and the view of the Terminal from across the canal:

Yep, the roller hockey rink at Enos Jones Park (8th & Brunswick) usually has a couple dozen skaters out there on any given day. It used to actually be available for roller hockey as well, but the skaters have since taken over entirely.

The Embankment is in disrepair

I think it's time for some maintenance on the Embankment.
A few minutes ago I was standing on the sidewalk waiting to cross 6th St at Erie. I heard a loud CRACK above me and I immediately bolted into the street (thankfully the cars on Erie were stopped at the light.) When I looked back, a dead tree had fallen from the Embankment right where I was standing. A number of branches several inches thick littered the sidewalk. Had I not moved immediately, I would have likely been seriously injured. What if it had been a parent with a baby stroller or an elderly neighbor standing there? The aftermath:

Car crash at 4th & Jersey
|
||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Home away from home
|
Fairly serious crash happened at the intersection of 4th & Jersey around 9:30pm last night. I couldn't tell exactly what happened, it looked like a common two-car collision that we see at many of these intersections. One of the cars ended up jumping the curb and plowing into the side of the real estate agency on the NW corner. A woman left one of the cars with a serious limp and was carried into the Baptist church to await the ambulance.
The roads were wet at the time but I did not see any cars blocking the intersection on Jersey (as they often are.) Note that this is the second time in a few years that the building has been hit by a car--the last time put the old "Public School" boutique out of business for good.

Another vote for DeCarlos here. Agreed though, he is not cheap but you really get what you pay for.
Just so you have an idea, I usually pay around $200 for alterations that include hemming on the pant legs and waist, and bringing in the suit jacket in several spots (shoulders and back). These suits are by far the best I own and fit my body better than anything I have ever worn. DeCarlos is also excellent for recommending accessories such as the proper style of belt, tie, and shoes to go along with your outfit. Oh, and just to share an anecdote: Last time I went in to get measured for a suit, the guy in front of me took about 10-15 minutes getting the same measurements done. When it was time to pay, he balked at the cost and walked out with his suit. So it's probably important to know what you're getting into ahead of time. Also, expect about four weeks for the work to be complete. Again, all that being said, DeCarlos Bespoke is one of the premier small businesses in town. http://www.decarlosbespoke.com/

Did anybody catch the new episode of You Live In What? on HGTV? The final segment on last night's episode featured this place on First Street at Brunswick, and wow... it is rather impressive.
I've walked by that home many times and always wondered what was inside past those smoked glass windows. Pretty cool to see the grand tour on camera.

I have been really happy with Fussy Friends as well. They are the only local place that carries Blue Buffalo cat food and they have the high-end wet foods as well. Also, they will deliver for free--nice when you need a big container of cat litter and don't want to lug it all the way home.
The staff has always been extremely friendly as well. Definitely recommended. Also, I heard the name was supposed to be "Pussy Friends" (you know, like pussycat) but one of the neighbors complained so they had to change it.

Workers were attending to a downed power line on 3rd St between Erie and Jersey around 7pm yesterday. For safety they shut off power to the entire block, so Key Foods and the Laundromat both had to close down for a little while. I felt bad for the people who had their laundry cycles shut off half way...
(Also, hopefully Key Foods will have a better policy than C-Town when it comes to disposing of any unfrozen meat or ice cream!)

I have yet to smell anything pungent downtown, but this morning around 8:30am I caught a whiff of the electrical stink while leaving the Pulaski Skyway southbound near Raymond Blvd into Newark.
However, it didn't last long as a little further south the odor was replaced by the pleasant aroma of fresh-baked bread. There must be a large bakery near the Wilson Ave exit on 1/9, because many mornings it smells like cinnamon buns.
