New York Ave-Heights-Construction

Just can't stay away

Does anyone know the story with the closure of the portion of New York Ave. that connects the Heights with Hoboken? I drove by the other day and it was closed off with temporary C.L. fencing. I assume/hope they are repairing the pavement, and I'd like to know who is performing the work and what the timeline is(Timeline, ha!). I also wonder what the general plan is.

This road has been one of the worst roads in town for years, and I'm glad to see it is getting some attention.

Any insight?

Re: Steven Fulop for Mayor - MAY 14, 2013 JERSEY CITY ELECTION

I am a Ward D resident. I was having a problem in my neighborhood and was getting no response from the City and my councilman, Bill Gaughan was no help. I knew Steven Fulop had a strong record of tackling quality of life issues, so I copied him on my correspondence with the town despite the fact that as the Ward E councilman, he had no obligation to help me.

2 days later, I received a call from one of his aides who was putting pressure on the proper city departments to get my situation resolved. Now, the wheels are in motion and I have been assured by multiple city departments that my situation will be resolved.

I will be voting for Mr. Fulop for Mayor as he is willing to go the extra mile when his colleagues take the path of least resistance.

Someone on Hancock raises bees on their roof. Last year I know they had a stand at the Fisk-Riverview Farmers Market with pies and such-not sure if their back this year.

Does anyone know if there's a place that supplies sod in JC, or better yet, delivers it? Neither Hudson Farmers MArket on JFK nor the 14th Street Center have it, and both recommended Charlies in North Arlington, but they won't deliver to JC.

Biking is the way to go. I can do Franklin and Central to the Hoboken Path in 9 minutes if I'm in a hurry.

No, you shouldn't. You should ride with traffic in the street like the law abiding citizen I assume you are. There are less potholes on the sidewalk, but you don't see me driving there.

That said, you're nuts if you ride with a kid in a bikeseat around here.

Or go to Citarella in NY by the 9th street path, have them shucked and put on ice(costs like a dollar/dozen I think), take the path back, sit on your front stoop and enjoy. For extra credit, throw the shells in the street.

Oysters start spawning around now, so they may not taste as good from now til september though.

Anyone know who that olde-timey Jersey City song they play on WFMU from time to time is?
-Lyrics are something like

"I'm going to jersey city that's where I want to be, cause down in jersey city there's a girl waiting for me, I'll wear a new tuxedo, shel'll be wearing a wedding gown, etc. etc."

DJ Street Justice plays it sometimes as well.

I disagree, crujones. I saw a guy watching a football game on his phone at Marco and Pepe. When his team scored, he threw his arms up and smashed one of their pendant lights. If there were more places with TVs, he could have gone to one of those and this wouldn?t have happened.

In fact, maybe M&P should put in some TVs and get rid of those pesky pendants which would undoubtedly block the view anyway. I think I might start tipping with Best Buy gift cards when I go there.

I would venture they probably don't wear watches because they have cell phones.

The Friends of the Loews are a hardworking volunteer run organization that has been fighting an uphill battle to keep the city and developers from knocking this place down all while maintaining and renovating an 80+ year old structure with virtually no budget. They're doing the best they can with what they have.

Instead of wishing they would do more, if you want them to change their programming and expand their schedule, offer to volunteer. They're not an elitist organization that wants nothing to do with outsiders. It's kind of obnoxious to sit at your computer and tell them what they could be doing better if you're not willing to get your hands dirty.

I was walking past Willy Joes a week or 2 ago and saw a sign explaining that they were closing due to the landlord refusing to fix a roof leak and clean up the backyard. When the guy inside saw me reading the sign, he insisted that I come in to survey the issues, telling me that he couldn't run a pizzeria with these unsanitary conditions. He showed me damaged ceiling tiles due to the roof leak in the kitchen and a pile of construction debris in the backyard. He mentioned some sort of lawsuit as well. He told me they were planning on relocating, possibly to Westside Ave and Sip.

He forgot to mention that he was plotting to blow the place up.

Just bought a new electrical stove and dishwasher for my condo, which hasn't been renovated since the 80's. Sears dropped it off today and went to install the stove only to find that there's no outlet behind the stove, the damn thing is hardwired into the wall. So I need to have an electrical outlet installed in it's place (haven't checked yet to see the if the dishwasher is hardwired as well).

Any suggestions for good electricians who do such small jobs?

You better check with your condo association for the building guidelines. How long have you owned this condo, I ask because the building inspector you used when you purchased the condo should have picked up this flaw.

Then find an electrician with a time machine since Bot's post is over a year old. I recommend Mulvey Electric, (732) 469-5797. Rick's guy all have Flux capacitors in their vans.

I appreciate the sentiment here, but it's a little self-absorbed. I would argue that integration of ethnic groups into American society has been an enormous boon, both to the groups & to the country.

Irish & Polish & Jewish & Italian and on and on. Now Puerto Rican and Dominican and Southeastern and on and on. Eventually everyone spreads out & integrates- if not the new immigrants than their kids. They keep what's good from their homes, leave behind what's bad, and off we go.

Leaving someone in a ghetto (and I use the word in the classic sense) or hoping that they stay there, whether because you want to "contain" them or because you dig the food in the long run is not healthy.

Not saying that you're suggesting that, but I can only view the deterioration of ethnic enclaves positively.

Besides, now you can get authentic Polish cooking in the burbs. Today, pierogis & kiebasi, tomorrow, real tikka masala & empanadas!

That said, this article is hysterical, also in the classic sense. I wonder how long the folks interviewed that live in alphabet city have lived there. Probably since 2005.

And are squeegee men really back?? Any independent confirmation of this from anyone here? I certainly haven't seen any.

GWB

I saw 2 squeegee dudes yesterday on Broome street. They have a lot to learn though. They actually asked before squeegeeing. You are supposed to squeegee first, then demand money. Sheesh.

Fat Idiot Got His Due
Friday, January 11, 2008

A Large Downtown Jersey City man was robbed at gunpoint by three men yesterday morning near the Wendy?s Hamburger Restaurant on Route 440, officials said.

The fat Jersey City resident was leaving the restaurant at about 12:29 a.m. when the men approached him, reports said. One of the men asked the victim a question. Then a second man took out a black handgun and demanded the victim's wallet and sack of burgers, reports said.

Reports said the suspects took $50 to $60 from the wallet and ate all the burgers in front of the sobbing man. Then, according to reports, the suspects dropped the wallet and fled south on Route 440.

The victim then went back into Wendy?s and begged for some replacement burgers. After being denied, the victim called police to report an unsympathetic Wendy?s employee, reports said.

I never refuted the vandalism claim.

I just took langdonalger's comment as a sort of elitism from a fan of so-called "graffiti art". It seems as though he/she claims that this "honky's begone" is too rudimentry or something to be considered graffiti.

I'm pretty sure that by definition all graffiti is vandalism.
If it is legally sanctioned, it becomes graffiti-style art or something.

Oh, and it's reggay, not reggae. Like my namesake, the popular semi-fictional band, the Reggays, not like the musical genre, mon. Okay. I and I gotta go.
