Well now that everything is done. I mean we can't get the building back. I would prefer that a building goes up as opposed to it staying vacant like that. It seems that since I've move here (1yr), there have been more homeless people and aside from three new restaurants Newark Ave seems to get worse and worse. Leaving this lot empty might just put it over the edge.

I can understand feeling like Newark Ave isn't developing at the same pace as Grove St but has about it has gotten "worse and worse"?

The dollar stores are the same ones that have been there forever (ecept for the new one which has a clean storefront and is not a blight on the neighborhood, IMO). The Rocket Building has been restored and, while you may not like the furniture at Milano, it's a better looking storefront than was there previously.

A huge warehouse store of crappy furniture has been turned into a decent looking Washington Mutual.

Of course, there's still a ways to go but I think "worse and worse" is not a fair analysis.

Totally. Hubby and I were actually commenting on how great those buildings could look if someone would restore them. There is/was a pretty good view of them from the upstairs of Skinner's Loft.

I think they're mostly the new boots. The ones where you can pay over the phone and then get a code to unlock them. I wonder if this easy method is promoting more booting where they would have issued tickets before.

My 2 cents:

Went last night - no it's not Mexican. Service was excellent, atmosphere was very comfortable, although the dining room is pretty loud when the place is full, such as last night.

Tried the mussles and ox tail appetizers, both good. The mussles in Skinners Loft was better. Ox tail was interesting, it was on top of some sort of rice custard?

I had the Grilled Flat Iron Steak, medium rare, very good quality meat, cooked just right, lots of flavor. The spinach and potato that came with it was very good.

Th other people in my party had the Pan Seared Scallops (Excellent -reccommended), and the Olive Oil poached Halibutl topped with tobiko (fish eggs).

They also had a $26 bottle of Zin that was quite a good deal.

And the kids thought the Chocolate Gelatto was the best in recent memory.

I think the oxtail was on top of polenta. I thought it was yummy too. Also - loved the Cranberry Fizz. Very unusual flavor.

Suze -

I'm with ya. I'm not sure I wouldn't have joined but I would have waited before cancelling my other membership. I still think this gym is going to be great but I think they could have handled this better. It would have taken just a couple of hours (or less) to give all current members a call and update them with the info Jerseygirl just shared. I think that would have gone a long way...

No, it's the one going in between the Wild Oats and the patisserie/chocolatier.

But seriously, they are pretty far along. I just hope they can stay afloat after what must have been a massive financial investment. Anyone else remember when they had to close Newark Ave the dig up their sewer line?

All of these attacks show a frightening lack of empathy (and personal responsibility) in these kids and their parents. It's like this area is a breeding ground for sociopathy.

but pretty much the price of everything in this area is ridiculous when compared to the rest of the country. $69/mo for that gym is better than $69/mo for some of the other options.

Something tells me that this thread is about to be consolidated to one of the others, but let me add another recommended dish while I?m thinking of it?

With this weird ?fall-like? weather in August, I?m battling a summer cold. Last night, mrs4bailey kindly got take-out of my favorite, unofficial neighborhood cold remedy ? the #1 Pho soup/Big Bowl.

I?m no expert in Vietnamese food and I certainly have no idea of the various meat (by)products that are in it ? but I swear this stuff absolutely GREAT if you?re struggling with cold symptoms. The effect could be totally psychological, but who cares when it?s this tasty. I usually mix a little of the hot sauce they provide with the broth ? really clears you up!

I completely agree. Lots of chili garlic sauce and the sweet-hot (hoisin?) sauce they include. Pho Tai (#4 - fresh eye of round) is my fav. Cures what ails ya!

Went to Sawadee tonight. It was okay. Nice environment, but I can't say the Green Curry with chicken was much better than Wild Fusion. And my wife's Pad Thai was, well, Pad Thai. Of course, Fusion has sushi, so that might give them an edge. All in all, it's nice to have another restaurant in the area. Unfortunately, you have to wade knee-deep into the local lowlifes to get there. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and move to Newport. Nice homogenized, Newport

Was hoping to at least try this place, but you unfavorable comparison to Wild Fusion just scared me away.

Is this a reasonable comparison? Would love to hear some opinions, because my experience with WF is that a lot of their food is borderline inedible.

Tough break on having to actually see "undesirables", Peabody... what a wonderful world it would be if simply none existed, huh?

Uhh...no it's not a reasonable comparison, IMO. I think Sawadee blows WF away in all respects. Except for their non-existent sushi - which may actually be better than WF. It's more consistent, anyway.

Well, here it is about a month later and they constructed about half of the first floor exterior wall today. It looks like there definitely won't be retail in this building along Brunswick Street. Also, it will definitely have a parking garage on the first floor, and if the whole first floor is a garage, it is definitely large enough for twelve cars. I disagree with you about the lot size though, ianmac - looks to me like they can probably fit four units per floor. That would mean four stories. We shall see though...if they continue working at the pace they worked today, the whole structure should be completed by the end of August at the latest!

Too bad about the lack of retail. That could have been nice...

Well, I wish it luck and I will try it as soon as possible.

Actually - this wasn't even the steam table place. This was the Payless. Steam table place is still vacant - I think.

I think they might have another restaurant somewhere which may be how they got the liquor license.

Hey there, Alex!

I've had:

Entrees:
Spicy Lemongrass Chicken (ordered extra spicy)
Chicken with String beans (actually - my friend had that)
Chicken Panang Curry

Apps:
Thai Steamed Dumplings
Vegetable Spring Rolls

All were excellent. I can't say enough about how perfectly they cook their string beans. Al dente - yum!

As experienced by others - the curry was very light. Sometimes panang is overwhelmingly rich and somewhat oily. Not this one.

Shrimp Pad Thai will be next. I saw it served to others and was jealous.

Had take out last night. Spring rolls and Spicy Lemongrass chicken. Both were great, even as take out. Jasmine rice was superb! Asked for extra spicy on the chicken and it WAS! That NEVER happens - I rarely feel the heat.

They do need a bartender as they don't seem to really be familiar with some of the basic cocktails but every one was really really nice. I will definitely be back!

YES we all expect quality and service and value. BUT could we have a LITTLE bit of optimism? To their credit, it sure don't look like a PAYLESS anymore.

I agree 10000%. And yes, it does affect us if people have so little optimism, piglet. It's frustrating and demoralizing as a resident and business owner (by marriage) to feel like people are just waiting for businesses to fail instead of trying to support them. When Metropolis first opened, we actually had people come in and say "I'll come back and shop here if you're still open in 3 months" Thank god there were people who weren't like that but still...

Personally, I'm excited they're open. The place looks great and the prices in the ballpark. I'm going for take-out tonight.
