Once again? Jen? Stevehpna/super_furry?... Anyone from HPNA?
Is the final renovation plan available for public viewing over the Internet in some form (.pdf or website)?... If not, are there any plans to put it somewhere where it?s easily downloadable and (if so) when?... If you?re not going to release it electronically, how can I get a copy?... Snail mail?... Can I pick it up somewhere?... Or,? if you?re not planning on making the final plan available for viewing outside of the HPNA membership, may I ask why?...

I, for one, am looking forward to seeing what the other Ward E candidates have to say.
Steve may still end up with my vote, but I?ve been a bit uneasy about the prominence of the ?family initiative? types on Team Fulop (first Althea Bernheim,? now Shelly Skinner). There are other constituents in Ward E and I hope the heavy FI presence isn?t a forecast of the priorities in a next term for Councilman Fulop. So,?I?m willing to at least hear the other candidates out? even the Pizza Man!

+1. That's why if I can make FIOS work without rewiring, I'll jump to FIOS as soon as it's available in my neighborhood. The number of HD channels is lame. The other frustration I have is (what I think is) a volume related issue with On Demand. I'll get blips and skips while watching during what I think is a peak volume time (Friday/Saturday nights) and any other time it's fine. I've brought it up to Comcast and they've offered to send someone out, but during business hours. I know the service is fine in the middle of the day, so I can't see taking the time off to wait for them. Bottom line - I don't think they have the bandwidth that FIOS has.

We haven?t gotten the notice that our street is enabled yet, but in preparation for that I have some questions that may be more general wiring issues than FIOS questions,? still, I?d be interested in some opinions before I contact Verizon so I don?t sound like a total dolt?
In our brownstone, the land line (DSL , phone) comes to a phone box in the back of the building, while the cable (Comcast) comes in at the front. We own/live-in the building and have 2 tenants, all with the same setup. From looking at the installation topic on the FIOS website, it looks like they run fiber optic cable all the way to the house and terminate it at a ?new FIOS box.? I?m assuming this new box is a junction that converts between optical and the existing copper wire at the building. If I go with FIOS for TV / phone / internet ? - would the one new box in the back be the only device necessary in case my tenants want FIOS later for phone/internet?? Or,? is it one ?new? box per phone line?... - would I need a second conversion box in the front of the building if I want to piggyback off the existing Comcast RF wiring? If so, would a 2nd box increase the cost of installation?... Recently, I did a home theater renovation in our living room and hid all the Cable RF wire into the wall. I?d hate to cut/patch/paint any new holes. Any ideas / suggestions / theories would be welcome! TIA!

I agree. Sondra was the BEST!
I don?t know if any of the Ox staff / management / owners read this forum, but here?s a suggestion or two? First,... I wonder if Ox might entertain the suggestion of a ?$0 corkage night? for one night a week on their least busy weeknight. A couple years ago, Montrachet in NYC tried a $0 corkage night on their weakest night (Monday) and soon Monday nights at Montrachet were crazy busy. I don?t know if the laws in Jersey City prohibit this or if the JC demographics would support this notion, but I could see this having appeal to a wino like me as well as those who are looking to save a buck or two in a soft economy. You could always try a $0 corkage night, and if you don?t get an uptick in business, return to the usual policy. Just curious, would anyone else on jclist be more inclined to go to Ox on a $0 corkage weeknight??.. Second,? I?ve brought quite a few of my foodie friends to Ox. They love the food, but they complain about the acoustics; some are reluctant to return because they can?t hear even when the restaurant isn?t full. I have to agree. If you?re part of a group that?s larger than 4 people, it is very difficult to carry on a conversation. Would doing something as simple as putting some tapestries on the walls in spots or fabric on the ceiling help?... I love the food and I?d really like Ox to succeed. I hope my suggestions are taken as constructively as they are meant.

More in the Philly area, but I think Longwood Gardens has an indoor area in addition to the grounds. It can make a good weekend excursion.
It's too bad Duke Gardens closed. I worked there weekends/summers/holidays all through my high school, college years and even worked there full-time before I landed my first post-college "real" job ('74 - '82). It was a pretty unique place.

Joined Brick Haus last month when my old gym in Hoboken went ?belly-up?.
I visited Club H for a free trial, but I prefer Brick Haus because it?s less of a ?scene? gym, less glitzy, and less expensive than Club H, but the equipment and facilities are still top-notch. But? to each his/her own. Overall, I?m very happy with Brick Haus and would recommend it. My only minor quibble is that I wish that there was an expanded floor area for stretching and ab work that had a wood surface. The current area in the corner can get a little crowded after work with as little as two people there and I find the rubber floor surface doesn?t give. I?ll use the class studio floor, which is wood, but sometimes that isn?t possible with a class going full-tilt.

Re: insulating a house
|
||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Home away from home
|
The ?very old? part is the big part of the question?
We tried the blown-in cellulose a few years ago. Our building is a ~1860 brownstone in HC, with our living room on the first floor and the bedroom at garden level. The insulation guys couldn?t get it to blow anything into the living room. Since then, I?ve opened the wall to put an electric circuit in and found out why. The living room exterior wall just several layers of sheet rock (like an onion) nailed on top of each other. The base level is the original 1860 horse-hair plaster on wood-slat lathe attached to the exterior brick wall. There was no space for the blown-in insulation to go. We were more successful downstairs in the bedroom where the wall was framed out and there was space for the blow-in. We noticed a big difference that first year. However, now, 3-years later, we?ve noticed that it isn?t as effective. I think the cellulose ?settles? over time and loses its insulating properties. If I had to do it over again, I?d put holes in the wall and run the standard fiberglass insulation on a roll. Messy, but it?s done once. But,? that?s in our house? The other piece of advice I?d give is that if you?re not sure, put holes in the wall big enough to get a good look at what?s behind the wall so you know EXACTLY what you?re dealing with. In the older buildings that have gone through several owners / ?renovations?, you can?t make an educated insulation strategy without knowing what you?re dealing with. Good luck!

Thanks all for the tips!
I didn?t know about monoprice and already ended up buying 12 AWG in-wall CL3-rated speaker wire from Blue Jeans Cable. Although the monoprice offering is CL2, the cost savings is about half of the Blue Jeans price and the CL3 vs. CL2 difference seems to be marginal. Oh, well? I?ll definitely be buying my HDMI? s from monoprice. Quote:
1.) Our building faces south; to aim the dish southwest while avoiding the taller apartment building next to us, we?d have to put the dish towards the front of the building. I know there are already tons of wires in the front, but (just me) I HATE the look of dish hanging off the front of an historic building. 2.) Having just replaced a roof 2 years ago with a tear-down, we?d prefer to minimize any new holes. 3.) Although I?ve never used a dish before, a good friend of mine has and he warned me about problems with spotty reception during storms. Have you seen anything like that in your experience?... Quote:
Funny you mentioned Axiom. I went though their wizard and contacted them last month to see if it would make sense to go 7.1 or 5.1. Given how small my living room is and where we want to have the couch (main seating for viewing is right at the back wall), the Axiom tech convinced me 5.1 is really the best that I could do given the room. Yes, I?ll be getting speakers from Axiom. Receiver-wise, I still may get a 7.1 receiver in case we ever move or remodel a room for a 7.1 solution. Currently, I?m leaning towards a Pioneer receiver with the intention of getting it with an iPod dock. The model receiver I?m considering also has an Ethernet port, so I?d have the option of connecting to my PC via a home WiFi / Powerline network, more to view photos stored on the PC than gaming. The only other components I?m considering buying are a Blu-Ray player (either the Pioneer or Panasonic) and ?something? to handle/protect line surges. We?ve already had a lightning strike fry a PC Ethernet card; so I?d feel much better with something protecting the electronics. I was looking at the APC Power Conditioners at Best Buy (we?ve both got Best Buy gift cards to use up). Do you think the ?Power Conditioner? thing is just hype or can I get by with an A/V style surge protector? Budget?... not sure yet. I?m hoping that buying a TV, receiver and Blu-Ray will get me some bargaining leverage where I can at least get close to the lower internet prices I see from unauthorized dealers. When we had our taxes done this last go around, my wife asked our tax-guy about the possibility of a tax deduction for the home theater we?re planning. Since my wife is a costume designer for theater/film and has been doing that for 20+ years, he felt that he could definitely make a legitimate case to deduct a portion of it. I feel confident about doing some of the work myself: running the in-wall speaker wire, putting in another electric receptacle, mounting the speakers, etc. However, mounting the TV has me a little nervous. Originally, I thought I?d do it myself with lead anchors and masonry epoxy, but I started reading warnings about 100-year-old brick crumbling (our brick firewall is about 150-years old) and having to use a reinforced rod-system because the shear rating on screws can?t support a 100 lb TV. 6th Ave is one of our main candidates to purchase from and they use CEDIA-certified installers. If they?ll guarantee that the TV won?t come off the wall, it might be worth the peace of mind to pay them to mount/install the TV. Any experience with wall-mounting?..

HD Experts: Questions on using JC Comcast?
|
||||
---|---|---|---|---|

|
A little late to the game, but we?re planning/remodeling for a HD home theater setup in our living room. Until FIOS is a reality, I guess we?re stuck with Comcast - we?re not too fond of ?dish? solutions.
For anyone who already uses Comcast HD, these will probably seem like ?dumb?, simple, newbie questions, but I?d rather hear real experience from JC residents than trust Comcast customer service (I?ve already made too many holes in my walls that I need to patch )? 1.) If we already have Comcast digital coming into our living room on coax and we switch to HD service, does Comcast have to run a new wire and make a new hole or do they just flip a switch to change the signal on the existing coax? 2.) I?m assuming we?d have to get a new box from Comcast for HD. Is that true?... 3.) The A/V receiver I?m thinking of getting can take either coax or HDMI 1.3 input. What are the wiring options for ?OUTPUT? from the Comcast HD box?... Would I have to go coax to the A/V receiver or is there an HDMI output on the Comcast box I can use to go to the receiver? Many thanks in advance!

+1. Speaking of Batali? Good wine lists in all the restaurants.
I like Lupa quite a bit too. It?s sort of the mid-tier restaurant between Otto and Babbo in the West Village close to the Soho border. I think Lupa has a long table that they use for walk-ins, so it might be possible to show up and eat. Also, Lupa does do seating at the bar, so if it?s a small party and you don?t mind the bar vibe, you have that as an option too. Anyone else read and enjoy Heat? It?s the non-fiction book about a writer from the New Yorker who becomes a ?Kitchen-slave? at Babbo and later apprentices with a Tuscan butcher. Great read, and Mario and all the restaurants (Babbo, Lupa and Otto) play a big part in the book.

Finally got a chance to try Ox for dinner, this past Wednesday ? overall, we had a fine dining experience and I?m glad we have this addition to the neighborhood. I?m not sure whether ?Restaurant Week? accounted for a bump in business, but there was quite a crowd there on Wednesday ? good to see! Someone in our group noticed that the owners of Light Horse were there too that night, so I guess the word is out.
We were a fairly large group (10 people) which can usually tax a kitchen, but they did a fine job in seamlessly coordinating the meal for a large group. Good service throughout the meal ? very accommodating. I had the Ox Tail appetizer and the Pan Roasted Duck Breast. Both were excellent! Good sauces on both, nice texture contrast between the Ox Tail meat and the polenta. Duck wasn?t overcooked or gamy and the Berry/Foie Gras sauce had a nice tang to balance with the duck fat; truthfully I didn?t get much Foie Gras from the sauce but it still just plain works. We ordered all the sides for the table ? my personal favorites were the fingerling potatoes and the Kale. I?m only singling out those because the other sides were wolfed down before I could get more than a bite. For dessert I had the Chestnut Crepes ? good, but I misunderstood the menu and was expecting more roasted Chestnut instead of candied Chestnut ? the chocolate part was right on the money. Others have mentioned the coffee ? I just had an espresso at the end so I can?t comment on the drip. The d?cor and ?look? were great. Stemware is more than adequate, which is a pet peeve of mine. Seats were very comfortable; we were there close to 4 hours ? no fatigue. My only quibble about the space is the acoustics ? all the hard surfaces make for a very loud room when the restaurant is close to full. Big Thumbs Up!!

Even though I don?t plan on being there tonight, I wish this group success. I would be happy to participate if an HP dog-advocacy group were to take up issues like: A.) Legal Off-Leash Options: ------ Dog runs ? investigating options for new ones in the area and/or issuing a formal ?NO SUPPORT? position for the current HP plan. ------ Looking to change the existing municipal statutes to decriminalize off-leash activity in parks during certain scheduled hours of the day. B.) ?Watchdog? the remaining HP renovation for ?Pet-Free? areas ------ ensure in the plans/execution that no more than 50% (or is it 51%?) of HP areas are designated pet-free per municipal statutes. If a group with goals like that already exists or is forming, sign me up! I?ll be there.
