June is your month!

Just can't stay away

Have you been thinking about adopting a dog or cat? Nothing beats the heat better than adding some cat or dog fur to your home. OK, maybe a giant AC and a frosty beverage would work a little better, but that air conditioner is USELESS during the winter.

During the month of June, all dogs over 40 pounds and all adult cats will have their adoption fees waived to qualified adopters. June is one of the busiest months at Liberty Humane Society, Jersey City's municipal shelter. If you adopt a pet, you are saving a life! If this is not a good time for you to adopt personally, spread the word!

Visit www.libertyhumane.org to learn a bit about some of the awesome animals looking for homes!

I have lived 3.5 blocks west of that for 11 years and have never felt unsafe. (I'm a woman if that matters...) There is Supremo Supermarket a few blocks down Palisade Ave- they actually give free rides home in their delivery van if you ask! Another easy option is to hop on a dollar van to the Light Rail elevator down to Shoprite in Hoboken...or good old Amazon Fresh/Fresh Direct delivered right to your door!

Up on Central Avenue are a few restaurants worth checking out- favorites include Renato's (Italian) and I like 5 de Mayo for Mexican. Apparently there is a new rumor that Wonder Bagels will open up there too, but perhaps that is in line with the Hoboken/Trader Joe's thing...

All in all, I say do it! I enjoy calling this neighborhood home and you sure can't beat the prices!

Can anyone recommend a rental place for dinnerware/glassware/cutlery for a party of about 50 people? Hoping for JC, Hoboken or Bayonne.

Thanks in advance!

Belmont and Kennedy- the "u" street. It is county property and no one ever has to worry about street cleaning there. You can drive up and hang out waiting for a spot, then uber home for $10.

Have you contacted Liberty Humane Society? Any animals brought in by Jersey City Animal Control are brought there. I would recommend emailing them a picture of MOnty with as many details as possible about time, location, markings etc...

lhs@libertyhumane.org

Fingers are crossed for you and Monty. My mom lives on the block so I will forward her the picture!

I use them. Sometimes. The food is always fresh- and their customer service department has been great any time I had an issue. (a cracked container, smooshed loaf of bread...)

My problem is I get trigger happy- clicking and ordering a bunch of stuff. Then it comes and I'm like "What meal do I create with 2 avocados, some chicken salad, a tub of chocolate chip cookie dough and par-baked scones?"

Browse the website- there are some great deals and yummy finds. I always tip the guys- just cause I am a big tipper in general... Let me know what you think!

She is FANTASTIC. I avoided the dentist for years because I hated going. She is great, as is the office staff.

I made chicken soup too! I feel like you can never have too much chicken soup in your freezer. And dump it all in. No rules ever. I almost added sausage to mine!

Re: UBER - car service in Jersey City

Just can't stay away

Rates have dropped by 20% two times in the last several months. As a customer, I find it awesome. However, that means the amount of money the drivers earn also drops. My boyfriend drives for uber and said the tips are really helpful. He said he doesn't expect them, but even on a local fare if someone gives him a dollar or two, he appreciates it. Last night I took an uber from Communipaw and West Side Ave to my home right off Rt 139 and then into Hoboken. The total fare, including wait time was under $15. Just the trip from my house to Hoboken is usually $12 in a cab. So tipping a few bucks does not negate the cost savings and the convenience factor of not dealing with obnoxious dispatchers and dirty cabs? Priceless, in my humble opinion.

As the weather outside gets more frightful, you know what would be quite delightful? A freezer filled with soup!

Please come to the Jersey City Soup Swap!
Sunday, January 25th.
2-3p.m. at Grace Van Vorst. 39 Erie Street...They have an awesome used book sale going on- so bring soup and some $ to pick up a few good reads!

Make 4-6 quarts of soup and freeze it. Any kind of soup is welcome. We will gather together, introduce ourselves, and then pull numbers out of a hat (or soup bowl) to decide draft order. We will choose soups to take home until all the soup is gone.

This event has been quite successful in the past years and I hope to see many of you there! Prizes will be awarded as well!

If you have any questions, feel free to email jcsoupswap@gmail.com

Re: Considering a move from DT to JSQ or Heights - any tips here?

Brownstones? Not really...but you can find a lot of neat buildings. Of course there are the pink brick Staten Island two families. (No offense to anyone from SI of course)

The Heights is definitely a bit more "gritty" than DTJC. JSQ is hit or miss. Magnolia and the streets around it are pretty nice... But I am happy to take the grit with my cheap rent. =) I pay $1100 for a 2 bedroom with a yard right between Heights and JSQ. Fancy? Nope. Architecturally stimulating? Definitely not. Big yard and cheap rent? Hell yeah!

I am actually currently looking to buy as well...I have a good realtor if you want her info...its certainly a different part of JC. But the good part is when you want the restaurants of DTJC you can get there quickly. When you don't want to live in a 500 ft. studio, you can do that too!

The 87 bus runs to Hoboken on a very regular schedule. There is also the 119 that goes into Port Authority, as well as the dollar vans ( I know some people hate them, I love them) run on Kennedy Blvd. So that helps a bit if you stay in the Heights as opposed to JSQ. Heights would get my vote- There are some great neighborhood associations etc...
