I dislike helmet discussions after accidents because it's too easy for people to blame the victim. There is a debate about the helmet issue. They can be completely ineffective, and can even be detrimental to cyclist's safety in some cases. Studies have shown drivers will pass closer to cyclists wearing helmets.

I somewhat agree (easy to blame the victim - and do people ever "blame" car crash victims for not buckling their seat belt?). I'll "disprove" the studies though: If I were helmet-less but had a reflective clothing, ample lights, panniers/saddlebags to increase my width and drivers still passed too close, there's still something wrong with them!

I read on some blog or website that someone cut a stick (I'm thinking more along the lines of a "pool noodle") to the width of the handlebars and tied it horizontally on the back. Apparently if you make it look pointy at the ends, it's a visual cue to drivers not to get too close or they'll scratch their cars...

Don't get me started on the delayed walking sign on Grove and Columbus.....people need to follow signals and not just walk when it is red.

The problem in JC is that the walk signs won't ever say 'Walk' unless someone has pushed the button. So people are conditioned to look at the lights. If they wait for it to say walk, they may be out of luck. It's also a problem when you approach an intersection after the light has turned. Does it say 'Don't walk' because there's no time to cross or because there was no one there to press the button?

I recall on Grove crossing Montgomery, the pedestrian light worked that way until the last 1-2 years - then it was configured to go to Walk automatically.

Did the taqueria get hit again?

I just passed by. They're ok - just a bit of mopping.

Yesterday (Tues) when I passed by, I saw a sign that said they would be closed on Wed 4/24. They aren't normally closed on Wednesdays but they must have had a reason for today (I didn't stop to read more).

Not big luxury buildings - but I know of several ground floor (street level) units on Grand that were flooded but have been/are being renovated. You might consider if not afraid of future 100-year flood events. Feel free to contact me off the forum (username at gmail).

Letter vs. spirit of the policy: I used to take my standard frame bike on the PATH sometimes weekdays at 7am (rush direction). Once someone stopped me at the Exchange Place elevator entrance but I went in anyway - walked down to the last car and there was hardly anyone in it, as expected. Fri afternoons around 5 or 6 non rush direction (Exchange->WTC) - to actually get to the platform you may have to stay out of the way of evening commuters but then the trains are pretty empty.

Contrast that with, say, Saturday at noon, which these days can rival the rush hour crowding!

Did you call after the first line was restored and get the "free" 1-day pass and 7-day pass as a credit for the 8 days of complete shutdown? (not quite helpful for those permanently relocated out of the PATH network but it's a gesture)

I'd wonder how they plan to identify "Hoboken residents" - by people's addresses in the system? It seems like if they decide to help out one group (as opposed to saying that everyone is SOL), they should be thinking of non-residents commuting to/through Hoboken, people affected by the other limited service, etc.

At about 6pm, there was a knock on my apartment door from a person representing "Direct Energy".

The person asked to see my bill, and then gave me some mumbo jumbo about gas/electric supply rates, and how I can save money with lower rates from Direct Energy.

It sounded a little fishy, but the way he laid it out, it sounded like I'd be saving some money. So, I signed up, but was told I'd be getting a verification call in about 15 seconds (!!!).

I got the idea that maybe they verify the customer so quickly as to prevent them from quickly researching the company.

The sales guy leaves (policy) while the verification person calls me. While I pick up the phone, I google on my laptop and find out that people have felt scammed by this company.

I tell the verification operator that I'd like to think about things. She says "okay" and hangs up. I track down the sales rep, who is still in my building, and ask to get the paper I signed back. He gives it to me no problem. I'm thinking that I'm safe, but I know he gave my information to the operator on the phone before I got my call back...I'm hoping that I am not signed up.

Has anyone on this board been approached by "Direct Energy"?
I vaguely recall a thread about these folks coming to your door, but can't find it now.

Anyone know anything about this company? Please share...

I had experienced this almost EXACTLY although I can't remember if it was Direct Energy or another. I even fell for the social engineering ploy "we talked to your neighbor so-and-so". I think I ended up not answering the verification, reading the papers (and not liking some of it), and called them back to cancel. Then I warned my neighbor that I thought they should stick with regular PSEG. As far as I know, cancelling worked - and now I know better.
