The mayor changed the policy on parking which was one to one ratio, he promoted this policy as councilman for downtown. Why? The developer can make more money on retail space. But let?s get realistic; JC has an aging population with arthritis, heart disease, or other problems that makes walking difficult. You also have parents who must bring children to doctors, dentists, etc but the city has an unreliable transportation system. Buses/lite rail do not go many parts of the city. Why should the rest of the city inherit the problems of downtown? Also groceries stores are not close by as they are in downtown so residents use cars.

Because not one of the buildings with one to one parking used all of the spaces? We have a bunch of half empty decks downtown because the people living here simply don't own as many cars as expected.

I have plenty of problems with Fulop, but not mandating parking that will never be used is not one of them. This is planning 101, find out how much of a resource is actually being used and then design the buildings around that.

I have to agree with Yvonne, I know of people who were lucky to get the last parking space in high rise buildings with .8 (ratio) parking. Let us agree that parking is at a premium for most of us in JC, especially in mid and high rises) that were not built with 1:1 parking. I will not even mention low-rise brownstones with multiple units and no parking.

If more families (priced out of NYC) are moving into JC or if new and old residents who work hours and places in JC where there is unsafe or no public transportation, then this is a quality of life issue which must be taken into consideration.

I envy your situation moobycow in which there is excess parking in your building and wish it were mine, but as I trudge through snow and ice to reach my partially covered space- I count myself lucky to at least have off-street parking.

I think our government has to take into consideration the reality of all our residents and provision of 1:1 off-street parking in new developments is necessary not only for residents but for commercial interests that are usually situated on the ground floors of these development. Witness the furor over parking for a restaurant in Hamilton Park http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewt ... eywords=Silverman+parking

As a former resident of Toronto which has a walkable downtown, with lots of green space , but also an amazingly efficient and comprehensive mass transit system of subways, trolleys and buses, as well as ample parking garages and spaces for residents, I would applaud a system like that.

But Jersey City lacks affordable housing (downtown as Toronto did when I lived there) and definitely lacks a comprehensive, efficient and safe mass transit system. If Fulop's plans include these last mentioned elements, then go for it.

Carepoint also owns Christ Hospital and Hoboken University Medical Center (old St. Mary's Hospital)

See CarePoint Health brings together three Hudson County hospitals:
Bayonne Medical Center, Christ Hospital in Jersey City; and Hoboken University Medical Center.
http://www.carepointhealth.org/our-hospitals/

Sort of scary.
Must say, I called an ambulance (JCMC) for a friend during the blizzard, they came quickly and were wonderful.
I would be extremely upset if they changed ambulance providers to McCabe.

ditto.
In all the local Ward E community meetings, I attended over the years, Councilman Fulop always told us this is a necessary thing and it would happen.

Even if he, as mayor, disagreed with the company and methods in which the reval inspections were conducted, surely there is some way to allow for challenges if there were improprieties.

Also, I was under the impression that the year 2009 was to be taken as the property value year, so that the recent uptick in prices would not affect it.

If we have a base year ( 2009), then as properties come on line, one would think that if revals would take place more often than every 26 years, as in the past, and the newer/improved properties are put into the mix, then the tax rate would be adjusted to a fair, realistic one for all property owners. ( Is that how it works?)
Are abated properties part of this? I believe not.

What is going on with this? I was under the impression that Jersey City is obligated to the State to do a reval at some point. Seems to me we actually missed an opportunity to do the reval last year when property values were still in a bit of a slump. Since last year property values have bumped and only look to be going up.

Steve- Do something to remedy the Two Jersey Cities. This is the quote fom the article that resonated with me:
"I find there are two Jersey Cities. There's the very wealthy people and then there's everybody else, who aren't so wealthy," said Kim Wiseman, a 47-year-old who moved from New York 10 years ago. She added that the mayor "has to create jobs, create affordable housing for people who don't make over $100,000 a year."

I have heard that NYC developers face very stringent requirements and regulations when applying for abatements.
Surely abatements in Gold Coast neighborhoods should be directly ties to on-site provision of affordable rate units similar to the 80-20 rate found in NYC.

At this same meeting, one of the deputy mayors said that the 10-year-abatement is competitive. In other words, if you look at some areas of Brooklyn and Long Island City, they are still offering 10-year abatements. His point was that in order to stay competitive with those areas that business/people are moving to, we have to continue to offer it. It'll plateau soon, I imagine, but I think right now they believe they still need to offer it.

Why don't they amend the deal to have the 99 units, but the increased units will all have to be at affordable rates!
I can't see why if developers want abatements they can't include on-site affordable units. ( Remember affordable
doesn't mean "welfare" it means middle class people making middle class wages.)

Considering the traffic situation in the Grove area,
the parking requirements should stand. If the developers
don't like it, then stick to the original abatement plan.

+1 You take your life in your hand when you drive up or down 10th Street at Monmouth.
There should be a three-way stop at the corner of Monmouth & 10th.
dtjcview wrote:

There should really be one at Monmouth & Pavonia or 9/10th. Pavonia is 2-way, it's the main connection between HP and Enos Jones parks for foot and bicycle traffic, plus there a lot of Atrium visitors and ambulances pulling out at 9th. Monmouth and 10th is an accident blackspot - the one-way changes to a 2-way in all directions, and the dip on Monmouth creates blind-spots for traffic on 10th.

Re: Car registration renewal - Warning

Chama,
Funny the same thing happened to me last year, and I was told that they don't send out renewals anymore. Guess what showed up in my mail this year?--- yes, a renewal notice from DMV.

They should get their story straight!
Quote:

Chama wrote:
I just wanted to inform the forum readers about the fact that Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) is no longer sending the car registration renewal notice by mail, at least for Jersey City residents. So please check your car registration expiration date; you will need to renew in person at the MVC office, there are no more renewal notices coming in the mail, and apparently there is no option to renew by mail or online, according to what the Clerk happily told me at the MVC office in Summit Avenue. However, the State of NJ MVC website provides different information in this regard, check it out:

http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Vehicle/RegistrationRenewal.htm

Not sure when this change took effect. But I learned the hard way yesterday, after getting a Legal Notice from the Jersey City Municipal Court with a Court citation rescheduled to Feb. 2014 for two violations encrypted in codes "39:3-4" and "39:6-55b". Later learned that they mean "Driving Unregistered Vehicle" and "Failure to Return License or Registration". The fact of the matter is that my registration had indeed expired at the end of September and I hadn't realized about this "violation", since I was actually counting on the registration renewal coming by mail from the MVC like it had happened in previous years. My car was screened while parked on the street in early November and all I got was the Court citation in the mail (no ticket, no warning, no further explanation).

I immediately renewed my car registration in person this morning (almost in panic mode) but I will still need to show up in Court in February and present paperwork of car registration renewal, etc., as they consider this "a serious violation", according to what the Court clerk explained to me over the phone (go figure!). I would probably agree if I had deliberately and intentionally decided to drive with an expired registration, which was, of course, not the case. Part of my forgetfulness is that I occasionally drive my car (weekend errands, mostly).

So make sure to record in your calendars the month of your car registration renewal and get a reminder to plan your visit to your nearest MVC office to renew in person.

Guest Speakers from KRE to present proposed plans for about 400 units, retail & park on roughly 5 acres. Location: Marin between 8th/9th Streets (behind Unico Towers). KRE projects include Grove Pointe and 225 Grand

And that Reggay is why Steve Fulop will win.

Years ago, a resident from another ward asked me what is it like to have Steve for my councilman? And I replied, "Well he answers my calls and emails within 24 hours." The person said, "Good enough for me, he's got my vote!"

Quote:

Reggay wrote:

I knew Steven Fulop had a strong record of tackling quality of life issues, so I copied him on my correspondence with the town despite the fact that as the Ward E councilman, he had no obligation to help me.

2 days later, I received a call from one of his aides who was putting pressure on the proper city departments to get my situation resolved. Now, the wheels are in motion and I have been assured by multiple city departments that my situation will be resolved.

I will be voting for Mr. Fulop for Mayor as he is willing to go the extra mile when his colleagues take the path of least resistance.

Really H-Parker? It is extremely unusual for a religious leader to seek public office in this country.

How quickly we forget! Does anyone remember Mitt Romney , a BISHOP in the Mormon Church , who ran for PRESIDENT and was a former governor. He was also the son of two Mormons who also ran for elected office.

It is extremely unusual for a religious leader to seek public office in this country. Most religious leaders have the sense to understand that the separation of church and state should be respected. They understand that anyone who has devoted their life to bringing other people to God and to teaching their understanding of God's will should not hold political authority in a diverse society.
