Besides loads of WW2 memorials, there are 9/11 memorials in a few countries around the world. A big difference of course, is that the US is a nation of immigrants, and has not sent many immigrants out to other countries.

lol yeah right. I go up and Down Newark Ave almost every day, the traffic isn't any worse than it used to be except for the construction by the cemetery. There is never any traffic backup around Newark & Jersey Ave. The idea that it's backing up all the way to Monteleone's is just fantasy.

Yvonne, you know the MUA is autonomous and not under the control of the Mayor's Office right? Fulop doesn't set the rates that the MUA pays. These rate increases were started by the MUA before Fulop even became mayor.

Hopefully the MUA does give some of that money back though, it's outrageous that they're hiking rates and accumulating money for no reason.

it sounds like you're trying to buy an apartment in a 2-family home, not the entire home, is that right? Because if you're buying the entire house I'm not sure why tandem parking or an HOA would be an issue.

Agree, the cap for sick leave pay should be $0, not $15,000.

Also I saw something recently about the pension fund giving 7% returns? Is that right? If so that's pretty outrageous and should be cut in half.

It was to increase turnout but also to reduce expenses to the city by having one election instead of two.

Anyway, I just looked and turnout in 2013 was 39,639, and in 2017 was 39,099. So yeah a slight change. But 2013 was a big year with Healy vs Fulop. This year it was pretty much guaranteed Fulop was going to win so it wasn't as big of an election.

THAT'S BECAUSE THE HOUSES ARE WORTH MORE MONEY NOW YOU DUNDERHEAD. If your $50,000 shack gained $2 million in value you should be thrilled to pay whatever amount of taxes come at you because you are RICH. The point is the entire city would be better off, including those with reduced assessments, if the state made a one time exception and had a stepup/phase in assessment. If so, the current reval would never have taken as long as it did to finally occur. The incentives to do so were not right under the current law.

And I've already pointed out how that will not happen, and doesn't make any sense. To present it more clearly than before, and add to it:

? Your proposal is almost certainly illegal under current law

? The state legislators would be fools to vote for it, since it will reward this form of negligence, and give other municipalities an incentive to keep delaying revals

? Jersey City doesn't deserve special treatment, since its chief role here is to delay and obstruct and sue and refuse to follow the law, to the bitter end

? Anyone with half a brain will see this as a transparent attempt to add yet another delay to the reval

? This is a problem that JC caused for itself, by going 3 decades without adjusting its taxes, and it's not Trenton's job to fix it

? It is utterly false that the "entire city" will benefit, as the tens of thousands of property owners who are scheduled for a tax cut will need to pay more taxes

? The people who are facing a tax hike had years to prepare, it's not like this was a secret

? The people who are facing a tax hike did nothing whatsoever to earn or deserve any special treatment whatsoever -- in fact, they've benefitted for years (if not decades) by paying less than their fair share

In short: Your "phase in" proposal is deeply unfair; it incentivizes municipal negligence; and it's not going to happen anyway. Pass.
Well put. People calling for a phase in are being greedy and encouraging more bad behavior.

It's incredible that the city refuses (is there a better, more apt description for their dereliction of duty?) to ticket or enforce easy things that could help the city coffers and lessen the tax burden of city residents.

A brief list of things that could be done to increase revenue:
- enforce parking regulations (zone violations, parked too close to curb, crosswalk blockings, etc)
- enforce basic traffic regulations (speeding, rolling through stop signs, running red lights, etc)
- enforce sidewalk issues
- increase permit parking fee ($15 for yearly permits is a JOKE...!)
- animal control enforcement (failure to clean after dogs, verify and fine for dog license/registration violations)

Cities should absolutely not rely on fines for budgetary reasons, because doing so encourages the government to invent new fines and come up with other ways to pillage the pockets of citizens. Taxes are and always should be the primary method for funding government.

This is the same reason why civil asset forfeiture is so perverse. If cops receive funding from stealing from citizens, they will always find new excuses to steal property.

While it's obvious that the overtime / off-duty program needs a rework...
Quote:
Of the roughly 120 cops who joined the force since 2016, 27 made more than $45,000 last year counting overtime, city payroll records show. If their off-duty work is included, 29 topped $60,000.

$37k is an astoundingly low number for a police officer, and $45k with overtime is still really low. Maybe the pay scale needs a total rework so that officers start off with higher numbers and don't get crazy raises to the point of making $250k/year eventually.

Re: Hudson Restaurant Week Jan22-Feb2

At a glance they all look pretty good. Maybe not an amazing deal, but a decent one if you were planning to get dinner. All the restaurants I checked appear to be $40 or less for 3 course dinners.

Pasta e Vino for example is $35 for:
Appetizer ($9-10)
Entree ($14-19)
Dessert ($9-12)
Glass of wine ($8)

So going off their menu price, that's $40 - $49, or for restaurant week it's $35. Not mindblowing, but still pretty good, if you're picking the right things. Somewhere between 10-30% off.

I imagine most of the restaurants are similarly discounted.

edit: took a look at VB3 (aka Villa Borghese III. super confusing having two names, I didn't even know what it was at first).

Lunch $19 for Arancini ($11) + Smokehouse Burger ($15) so you save $7 on the meal. Not too bad.

You really need to dig a little deeper... this whole investigation has now turned to protecting the compromised FBI and
protecting the democrat party. After all these months of leaks, including Director Comey's self admission, don't you think real hard conclusive evidence would have leaked?

wtf are you even talking about? "Compromised FBI" wtf does that even mean? How has this investigation turned to protecting the FBI and Democratic party? Huh? The investigation is still purely about the Trump team and potential collusion with Russia. FOX and Trump seem to want to make it about Democrats since they know supporters like you will eat it up so when they further obstruct or shut down the investigation you maroons are OK with it.

No idea what you even mean about Comey's "self admission" but no, I don't think any hard evidence would have leaked. Mueller seems to be running a tight ship. Papadapoulous had been working with the FBI for TEN MONTHS before anybody found out about it. Mueller's team has had every email from the transition team and nobody even knew about it until they started asking Trump's lawyers about some of them. Just because the Republican Senate members are leaking every bit of info they get doesn't mean that Mueller's team will. It's the god damn FBI after all.

Quote:
Manafort's problems aren't even related to the election. If you fact check your "rebellion in Ukraine", the truth is the sitting elected government was leaning towards Putin and not NATO The Obama Administration (Clinton/Kerry) supported the"rebels" who overthrew it.

You guys keep talking about how this investigation is a nothingburger and then when Trumps CAMPAIGN MANAGER is arrested for LAUNDERING MONEY FOR RUSSIANS AND STAGING RUSSIAN INVASIONS you say it's completely unrelated? We have no idea if there will be more charges against Manafort related to the campaign.

Quote:
As for Benghazi (another in depth investigation by the FBI btw) that whole incident would not have happened if Obama/Clinton had not overthrown Gaddafi Government. Of course unstable Libya is still in chaos... but the open selling of African slaves in the public markets is booming.
It's amazing how Republicans want to bomb every country on the planet unless a Democrat is in charge. But that's besides the point. You have not even attempted to provide a counterpoint to my assertion that all investigations related to Benghazi were 100% politically motivated and so seeing Republicans whine about this investigation where people are being actually criminally prosecuted is very frustrating.

I don't understand how anybody can be against this investigation. Mueller is a REPUBLICAN. Rosenstein is a REPUBLICAN. FBI employees on the whole donate twice as much money to REPUBLICANS. It's the freaking FBI. Every single Republican was in favor of Mueller's appointment, but as soon as he starts charging people they're all of a sudden freaking out. Why? Give me a good explanation for why every Republican is starting to freak out? Is this what innocent people do? Try to shut down investigations when the heat gets on?

Speaking of nothingburger investigations, how's the Benghazi witch hunt going? Hold on, there isn't a current Benghazi investigation? That's so strange, it's almost like Republicans never gave one shit about Benghazi and were politicizing a tragedy where several Americans died and using perpetual investigations to try and damage Clinton, and as soon as she lost the election they stopped talking about it instantly.

Republicans led EIGHT investigations without finding any wrongdoing at all, and zero charges against anybody, and they never stopped shrieking about it, until Clinton lost. And now we have an actual investigation that already has 4 people being charged, and they're calling it a nothingburger. If this investigation is a nothingburger, what were the Benghazi investigations? An anti-matter-burger?

The novelty of conservatives saying this investigation is politically motivated after the Benghazi farce is just unreal.
