All fascinating pieces of the puzzle. Might the fact that the "best" district 5th graders are better prepared but half the 8th grade class of LCCS gets into McNair mean LCCS's success is broader? Any idea how many Cordero or PS16 kids get into McNair? I don't know, but this is the kind of stuff I think the DISTRICT should be studying, rather than simply attacking the charters, starving them of funds, and then pointing to their failures rather than successes. I do know about the quotas at McNair, but that would make the data even more fascinating, no?

It is difficult to find out where the McNair students graduated from because I have not seen any information available to the public. There is no transparency in the system that will allow us to find the answers to all of these questions. Also, we can't account for any type of favoritism that may be given to one student over another. I am not directly talking about being more favorable to a child who went to charter school; but I am referring to the favoring of children from families who "may know someone." There are so many variables and no way to solve them without going on a goose chase.

Great point!

As far as the "one size fits all" debate, I think that sadly all of the media hype about charter school reform is really confusing citizens. For those who do not take the time to educate themselves they may be sucked into believing that the entire school system has to be changed. Then we end up making drastic changes but not resolving the true problems affecting the students, as my Liberty Academy example shows. The funding debate is a legitimate one but we cannot sit down and assume that an all charter school system will fix the problems affecting the public school system; and on the flip side, people should not act as if charter schools should be eliminated because they are essential resources in the community and, if run properly, bring a fair balance to our educational system.

It's not illegal in Jersey! It's an unwritten code for many government workers. A closer look at the records of many JC government workers may find that they hold two or three jobs and only actually do work for one, if that!

Perfectly said! Does Liberty Academy Charter School ring a bell to any JC residents? Reminder: Jersey Journal Article. A poor administration, in charter or public school, will lead to a poor performing school. If you look at Liberty Academy's report card, very poor to say the least, you will see that they are not as successful as some of the public schools in the city.

Another good response to the study, this time from Bruce Baker, a professor of Education at Rutgers... http://schoolfinance101.wordpress.com ... w-jersey-charter-schools/ Baker, for what it's worth, is a supporter of more charter schools. But much of the charter school movement does not like him because he criticizes the claims that charter schools uniformly outperform district schools. He also has been very skeptical of the other "reform" efforts such as abolishing teacher tenure, merit pay, etc.

Thanks for that article! Very informative and it's good to show people the truth behind the numbers! The government and corporations love throwing numbers and percentages at us to make things look great but we are never able to see the truth behind the numbers. Great job by Baker for actually giving out the information that I was looking for. We can't just sit back, see a number, and think that this "reform" is a magic elixir that will repair the entire situation. If you look at all of the reform information like Michelle Rhee and her new initiative, she never mentions getting to the root of the problem and solving it. The schools will never improve unless administrators/government officials realize that the schools and surrounding community need to work together to solve problems affecting the children inside AND outside of the school.

It looks like the Washington Park Association was able to work something out with Union City Mayor Brian Stack and Hudson County. JC Independent is reporting that the WPA will be partnering with UC and HC to develop the sports field. They also state that Jersey City residents will get a chance to be part of a committee to help with ideas and concerns about the project.

Don't worry you are not the only one. I've just recently woken up from my ignorance and have started to get more involved and paying attention to the issues arising in the city that I was born and raised in. One of the areas that are of particular interest to me is the BOE/JC Schools since I now have children who will one day enter the school system. Thanks for all of the information and links that you have posted because it gives me the opportunity to be more informed and learn more about these topics!

Honda's are always prime targets. Especially those new Fit vehicles. They may not be "fancy" rims but most of the thieves steal them and then sell them off to honda civic owners because they "like the way they look." I honestly don't get the whole craze but there are people who love swapping cars and car parts online. Wheel locks may be your best bet but you have to be careful because the savvy thieves may have a universal wheel lock removal. Mechanics use them all the time when a client loses their wheel lock removal. Just a heads up for you and anyone else on the forum with a Honda vehicle.

PS- You can always check out a spot like B20Vtec to see if you see the rims but you may not find out if they are really yours unless you have something unique on the rims to know they are yours.

I never said that keeping the students in school ground was a bad idea. My school kept us in school grounds during lunch time and there was no problem with that. My issue is that we continue to name call and drop blame but we never get together to hold the administration responsible for their lack of action. I have two full-time jobs and three children in my household to take care of so I am by no means trying to throw all of the workload on myself or people in similar situations. But, sadly the parents don't want to take on the responsibility for their children and this is causing problems for the rest of the community. Shipping them all off to jail is not going to solve the problem because there will still be residual left for generations to come. Sorry for trying to find a solution to a problem that others just want to write off and think it will be solved by just dumping them out of the city.

As a lifelong JC resident, I see it as an embarrassment to have to read forum comments regarding the "animals" attending local High Schools like Dickinson and Ferris! I understand that the behavior of most of these students is utterly ridiculous but does comparing a human being to an animal actually accomplish anything? Why don't we focus on trying to find a resolution to the underlying problems instead of bashing each other and calling one another names?? The issue begins at the home and sadly most parents of this generation do not have the basic skills to be parents. Therefore, if we as a community want to see change, we have to band together and raise these children as a community. It is easy to point fingers, complain, and leave these kids to be lost for life. The educational system here is in shambles, most administrators and residents have the "I don't care" mentality. This is the easy way out and we could go through life complaining and never resolving the problem. The true challenge comes in us getting together and actually doing something about the problem and taking action. Can we take action or will we just keep the vicious cycle going?

Michele:

Thank you for the information. I was looking to see if there was any program available to the students that is somewhat like a "Book Club" for adults. Where the kids can gather together and read a book each month and discuss it with a group of their peers. I've seen that there was something like this being promoted by the Pepsi Refresh Project where someone was looking to get funds from Pepsi to get e-readers for children to do this program. I looked on the library's website and did not see anything like it there so I decided to see if there was any organization around the city doing this. Thought it would be an interesting way to promote reading in children around the entire city.

@Tbird wow thanks for that breakdown. The news usually just reports the big number and never explains anything. So by taking the full year's debt service upfront what do they gain? More money to use to their liking? What I am understanding from this is that they are using up all of this money early and then at the end of the year they rush to fix their mismanagement of funds. So we are constantly forced to pay more taxes because city officials don't know how to balance the books. Am I somewhat right?

The Jersey Journal article has a picture and you could clearly see a mechanic's work light underneath the vehicle. Why would they need the light UNDER the car to put air in tires? No reason, but the county official has to lie because most government officials are used to being able to get away with things as long as they lie their way through a story. Hopefully, we can become less complacent and demand that rules and regulations are enforced. If she took it in for an oil change, just admit it, pay the fees, and take whatever consequences come with breaking the rules.

@truthinprint that's good that there are UC residents standing up against this issue! But from what that article states, it seems that Stack is trying to bully his way through everything by gathering a mass amount of people from other parts of UC who don't really care about what goes on in that section of their city. Kind of like, "out of sight, out of mind." Sad! Also, its sad that we cannot even get support from OUR local government officials.

Hey everyone... I came across this article the other day regarding this same topic and wanted to know how y'all felt about it.. It was on NJ.com and it discussed how Mayor Stack may have thrown out some type of threat to the WPA as far as bringing in a mass number of Union City residents to outnumber the WPA members and show their strength. Also, there seems to be some political back story involving DeGise and Stack that is going to make it difficult for the residents of JC to have a fair say in this matter. So basically, the citizens of JC will be forced to accept whatever Mayor Stack wants because DeGise only wants to make him happy to have his vote of confidence! It seems that as hard as we will try to fight this matter, the decision has already been made.

You would have to find information on the Board of Directors/Trustees that is in charge of the school in question and get the name of the Chairman/woman. Have you even tried bringing it up to them? Because you may be able to resolve it without even taking any legal actions.

@pickledpark that sounds like Grade A blackmailing to me! So sad that our supposed county leaders are only concerned of taking care of their own kind. I wonder how much of a "kickback," I mean yearly bonus, they would get if this deal actually goes through. I signed the petition last week and spread the information to everyone that I know from JC. If they don't care about the people than the people need to find new leaders!

@truthinprint great observation! I completely forgot about that even happening. I don't think they are even concerned about safety or the opinions of their community. Just goes to show you the type of "leaders" that we have to deal with!
