Re: New Jersey condo market is heating up: report

Yep - the condo market is definitely heating up. Downtown, values are close to 2008 and climbing. I watch the market pretty closely and what's impressing me is the rise in the Heights - both houses and condos. Greenville is still struggling and from what I can see, Lafayette is pretty flat.

No more taxpayer funding for Loew's but PLENTY in the budget for cronies who are part time or no show workers to have cars with no city emblems, plus gas and insurance.

That is truly sad. Europa has been there for well over sixty years. Don't know where I'll go for my holiday kielbasa and pierogi now. I wish the owners the best. I'd suggest that Europa should take over Sava Polish Deli's space because the owner there has been trying to get out for years but I understand the terms of the lease there are crippling.

WTG JC landlords. Guess we all have more vacant storefronts to look forward to unless another cell phone joint or wire transfer to India outfit comes in. Best wishes, Europa. I'm sure gonna miss you.

Re: Steven Fulop for Mayor - MAY 14, 2013 JERSEY CITY ELECTION

I feel the Fulop momentum building but I'm still not confident. I am a Facebook friend of Steve and have sent him a couple of e-mails and have gotten responses from him and/or his team to every single question that I've asked. I sincerely hope that Healy is defeated. I totally agree that the race will be won or lost downtown.

Voters remember - Leona Beldini is in jail because Healy was a coward. Healy delayed the property re-val because it was occurring in an election year. Healy struck down the motion to have emblems put on the vehicles of all council members so that his friends wouldn't have to account for their vehicle usage. Healy did nothing of substance either before or after Hurricane Sandy for those affected. Any corporate growth in Jersey City that has happened during his tenure has occurred despite him, not because of him.

Others, feel free to add items that I have omitted.

My personal note - I have seen the Mayor out several times and every - EVERY single time that I've seen him, he was severely drunk.

Please, please - vote Fulop.

He let Leona Beldini go to jail and take the fall for him and then he seeks re-election. How can anyone, in good conscience, vote for him?

The menu layout - first page was Pho (various varieties). Second and third pages - appetizers. Remainder of the menu was various breakdowns of entrees. (Seafood, noodles, rice dishes, vegetarian). What I didn't specify in my previous post was that I said to the waiter, "I'll start with Pho number 4 and then have my seafood with vegetables." I'm sorry but if I'm sitting for 45 minutes with nothing in front of me and the rest of my party have their entire meals spread before them (for the most part), I think that at least deserves a warning from the waiter when the order is placed. If that's the custom for Viet Namese cuisine, fine. But you're serving in Jersey City, not Da Nang.

And walking around the restaurant floor while talking on your cell is not OK in any restaurant, at least to me. But maybe some of you will tell me that's also Vietnamese culture.

Just ate here with my wife and another couple. It was probably the worst dining experience that I've ever had in Jersey City. The waiter and the kitchen had no concept of courses. I ordered Pho as a starter and seafood with noodles as a main course. My dining companions also ordered appetizers and entrees. To start, two people were served appetizers while the other two got nothing. Then my wife was served her main course (a very expensive lobster) alone. Then immediately after, the other entrees were served and my wife's appetizer came. I still had no Pho. In the mean time, the servers brought over THREE plates of sprouts and basil, saying "for soup" but no soup was to be seen anywhere. I still had nothing. Called the waiter over and let him know my extreme displeasure.

He hid in the kitchen for the remainder of the meal. Finally received my entree delivered by a busboy and, of course, 30 seconds later my Pho came which I sent back. When the waiter finally came out of the kitchen, he circled the dining room which only had four active tables, while talking on his CELL PHONE, ignoring my table because he didn't want to talk to me and apologize. The whole meal was a disaster. Never got to taste the Pho, and despite my complaints, nothing was removed from my check. Too bad. Could have been a nice addition to our dining rotation.

Look, I'm a surviving Catholic and no fan of the current Pope. But from what I've heard and read, Pope John Paul II was completely incapacitate physically and mentally at the end of his papacy. Pope Benedict witnessed that and didn't want that to happen to him. He's EIGHTY FIVE! He realizes that he's declining. Smartest decision he's made since he was made Pope.

I believe Greenvillechick should take out a $1500 insurance policy to get a couple of twenty dollar jobs. GVchick, sorry I don't have any jobs for you but I wish you luck with your endeavor. So great to see such a strong work ethic for a parent trying to provide food and shelter. Hope your kids are noticing how you and your husband think.

Those cheeks would have been hanging over both sides of a regular cart.
On a positive note, I like that Shoprite doesn't hassle customers about using their carryhome bag as a basket in the store. Some stores do because of loss prevention concerns. It helps not to buy more than I can carry home.

Oh My God. OH MY GOD! Please Mayor Healy. You're ruining this city. You're a drunken idiot with a wife who's a worse drunk than you. I've seen you on a television interview with your red longjohns sticking out below your pant legs. Your 73 year old deputy mayor is in jail because of you. But I fear you will be re-elected because of the incumbent machine and the dunces that vote. Please, in the name of God, STOP!

Look, a brownstone is as much cookie cutter as a luxury condo. I have no problem with disparaging neighborhoods that are unsafe, dangerous, and relatively ghetto - filled with 99 cent stores and places where you have to "smell meat" because the expiration date doesn't matter? rofl. When you say however that Newport is a cookie cutter neighborhood with no restaurants, bland, etc. you just look silly.

If you take Newport out of the equation, the median income of JC drops by like 50% (Guesstimate but I bet I'm not far off). Those "bland" areas like Newport and PH (where I am) are the life blood of JC. You should be thanking those people who live in these areas everyday and twice on Sunday.

In regards to CP, just look at the sales records. Even during the downturn, CP held up in value. If there were rankings of luxury condos, CP with the amenities finishes, and views would be the top 3 places to live. Sugarlofts would be close behind. In any case, there is no point arguing this because you will never live nor, I assume, can afford to live in CP.

I'm doing you a favor by telling you not to anger those in Newport or PH because without them, JC wouldn't even be the crap hole considered by NY'ers. Think of the most dangerous parts of greenville spread over downtown...no one wants that - not even you. Deep in your heart, I know when you say "cookie-cutter," you are showing love by saving face. It's okay, I understand.

Do you know how many crappy, old, dirty rental units there are in Newport? Your figure of 50% is WAY off. And who do you think owns the brownstones in Hamilton and Van Vorst Park along with Paulus Hook? I can tell you that they're not making $100K/year.

If you need italian cookies, pastries or cakes go to Monteleone's on Newark Ave next to Casa Dante, 5 min walk from JSQ PATH. Doesnt get more old school than Monteleone's, you can't go wrong there.

No hipster, gourmet, organic overpriced nonsense at any of these 3 places. That's why they've all been in business forever.

Exactly right.

Do people REALLY expect bread and butter while waiting for their pizza to cook? If you've ordered a couple of entrees then I get the bread and butter thing. Should be served along with a salad. But while waiting for pizza? Really?

I was born in the heights. I think that the housing stock in the heights is great. If we had a smart local government (read Fulop) or private entrepeneur who would run a shuttle from the western slope and outlying blocks to the Ogden Ave elevator, the value of real estate in the heights would soar. Come on...The Beacon runs shuttles farther to Grove Street than the Heights shuttles would need to run!

There are still five multi-family brick rowhouses on York between Barrow and Grove without power. They all had the garden level units destroyed. These places have to be re-zoned as basements on the garden level.

Look, anyone who doesn't realize that this is bigger than garden level apartments and regulations that a city can impose...it's just not realistic. Tide levels are rising even faster than predicted. Jersey City is going to approve a new highrise on the precise location where the flood started to invade downtown because our mayor doesn't give a damn. I used to joke about buying oceanfront property in Ohio. Not laughing so much now.

OK so Texas is trying to let EVERYBODY know that shep likes to flirt and she needs someone to flirt back at her to validate her existence. The fact is that if Mamoun's could put Ibby's out of business in Hoboken in just two months after they spent a couple of HUNDRED THOUSAND dollars to re-do the place, it should tell you something about the food and service. Lentil soup - totally unseasoned. The specials that they used to have for lunch are gone. The people working there are seedy looking. I tried them again despite the previous bad experiences and it was still a horror.

Maybe you should go to C-Town and 99 Cent Dream and pick up some cleaning supplies and do the cleaning yourself if you don't want to pay people competitive wages for doing your grunt work.

Agreed. Most people who do this type of work value $10. Most people who contract people who do this type of work can afford the $10. Clean your own house for a couple of months and see if the extra $10 was worth it.
