I took mine to Ralph's on 4th and Erie. They hit it with a hammer and now it works fine.

Re: our tax dollars at work - crossing guards make $48/h

For those of you who didn't click on the link in the original post, here is the source of the $48/hr number. For anyone interested in posting their opinion without informing themselves, go right ahead. I'm sure you won't be deterred.

From the Jersey Journal

Jersey City is giving crossing guards small raises but won't provide new hires with health benefits
Friday, November 26, 2010
Jersey City's crossing guards will get a slight raise, but new hires won't get health benefits under a contract approved by the City Council this week.

The contract passed 5-to-2 at Tuesday's meeting. Councilwoman Willie Flood was absent and Councilman Steven Fulop left prior to the vote.

Councilwomen Nidia Lopez and Viola Richardson both voted against the contract, saying they didn't feel the benefits should be eliminated.

The crossing guards have been without a contract since Aug. 31, 2008.

Members of the Jersey City School Traffic Guards Association hired before June 30, 1991 will be paid $47.84 an hour retroactively for Sept. 1, 2008 to Aug. 31, 2009; $48.80 effective Sept. 1, 2009; and $48.80 effective Sept. 1 this year.

Crossing guards hired since July 1, 2009 will be paid $45.57 an hour effective Sept. 1, 2008; $46.48 effective Sept. 1, 2009; and $46.48 effective Sept. 1 this year.

Anyone hired after May 21 would not be eligible for benefits and all members with benefits would leave the traditional plan and transfer to Direct Access Blue Cross/Blue Shield or an HMO by Jan. 1.

The members with benefits will also pay a co-pay for mail order prescriptions and contribute 1.5 percent of their salaries toward the cost of their health care, as required by a new state law signed earlier this year.

The members will also be paid $500 each by Jan. 15 "in consideration for all employees in the unit leaving traditional coverage by Jan. 1, 2011," according to the memorandum of agreement.

Bear with me- I've never figured out how to post pictures!

There's a lot of variation in plumage, but check images online of the Cooper's Hawk. They definitely can raise the feathers on the top/back of their head into a small sort of crest that is darker than their back. Young have a lot more spotted brown than slate-grey on the back.

I wondered too, whether either of the reporters were birdwatchers.
I've seen Cooper's Hawks three times in my downtown backyard, and watched one eating a pigeon a couple of weeks ago in the West Village.

I've never heard that it's illegal, and if it is where's the logic in that? The parking space still works fine...
Mark.

The logic (your term) is that if they were to allow people to park at a broken meter, there would be a few people who would take advantage of that by breaking/jamming or otherwise disabling the meters in order to park for free.

You know, when I got back home after voting I realized that I hadn't noticed the initiative either.
I told my wife that I thought I had missed it, but when she went she had no trouble finding it.
It must not have been that obvious, or I have to start bringing my reading glasses.

Ya know what?
My property extends to the curb in front of my house.
But that doesn't mean that I can keep anyone from walking on it.
And if I don't maintain it properly, the city can fine me or maintain it for me.
And then charge me for it.

Can you really do that? What if I had video evidence from my nifty dashboard HD Douche-Cam (tm)? Who gets a ticket and what kind? I don't believe even a traffic cam can issue a moving violation in NJ, just a no-points fine.

That would make a great reality TV show, wouldn't it?
Drive around recording infractions and a swearing out complaints against police and others.
Follow through to traffic court.
Probably sell ads to the insurance companies.
Hmmm.

I'm surprised HD or Lowes didn't have them.
Depends on what size you need, but Downtown Hdwr on Newark used to stock some.
(As well as the tool to hold and twist them, though a small pair of vicegrips works.)

There used to be a motorcycle that parked on the sidewalk in front of the parking lot. It had some sort of proximity alarm on it that chirped if you passed too closely. It took me a long time to figure out what it was.
I haven't noticed it for awhile (like a few years), and in fact, the motorcycle may no longer be there, but maybe someone else has a similar alarm.

And you think that the Unions are draining the country?

Re: Downtown Jersey City major streets very unsafe and bad access for pedestrians
Home away from home
Home away from home

This spring I walked up to a couple of cops in the intersection of Mercer and Jersey. They were directing traffic and clearing the street after an accident that had taken place a short time before.
A car was being towed away, and it looked like that car clipped the rear of another that couldn't get across the intersection fast enough.
I told the police that it was a dangerous spot and pointed to one parked car as an example, saying something like "look, you can't see past that car if you're pulling out."
The cop said, "that car didn't have nothin' to do with it."
I said "but look," and pointed out that at least five of a possible eight cars parked at that intersection were too close to the corners.
Cop said, "We'll take care of this"
They did nothing.

I stopped a woman giving out a loading zone violation from her cart in front of Jersey Wines and Liquors, and pointed out a Library truck parked directly at the stop sign on the end of Mercer and asked her why she didn't ticket it, the law said 50ft! from a stop sign.
She said "I didn't give you a ticket." And drove away. ??

I had another cart guy tell me he just wrote tickets for zone permit violations.

I feel that they look at me as if to say, "What's the matter with you? A guy's got a right to park his car."

I really do wonder why they give a pass to so many dangerously parked cars.
