I've posted enough of our flooding hardships and OP, you and I spoke this afternoon. PathH8Ter's words could have been my own.... People definitely need to be prepared for some work, money and problem solving living in downtown JC.

That being said, I absolutely love it here, floating basement furniture and all. I can't imagine being anywhere else, and for those reasons, we suck it up every time and spend more time, money and emotion cleaning up and mitigating water problems.

And when I read stories like Oklahoma and the tornado, I feel less and less right to bitch :)

I know the house you're referring to. I'd be very concerned about living there because the street level space IS the living/kitchen space. We live further down 5th toward Coles, and in the rainstorm 2 weeks ago, the water got to 2 inches about the sidewalk at that intersection. If it rained that hard for another 15-30 min, I think that house would flood again.

We wrote off Beechwood a few years ago. After several instances of poor service (messing up order, asking what we ordered several times, and then telling us they were out of several things only to hear someone next to us order one of them), we bailed on supporting them.

Have these issues changed and we should try them again?

This is a duplicate from the plumbing thread:

I know some people have been asking about plumbers, and I can't recommend Byron enough:

Hutch Mechanical
201-888-4752

He's reasonable, easy to access, and seems to really care about solving your problems. We've used him for sump pumps, toilets, boiler and hot water heaters among the many times we flooded. He came the other day to work on our toilet, in the midst of us dealing with the flooding cleanup. He hung around to see if we needed anything.

When we thought we had issues with our sumps and hot water heater later on, he came that night and fixed our pilot light (thankfully, the only issue) at no charge and then came the next day to check on our pumps. He cleaned them out and they are perfect again.

Althea - I've been emailing you separately about my issue with our neighbor and lack of sump pumps. Thank you and Steve Fulop for your prompt attention to my issue.

I would be interested in hearing how others did with this storm? We've had our share of sagas with flooding in our basement - everything from a few inches to 4+ feet (Irene). We are at 5th and Monmouth. We now believe we finally have a system in place ($20K+) later to manage heavy storms (we would have been A-OK with Sandy had we had a generator), that's why I'm shocked we got water this time and why I believe it was because we are pumping out our neighbor.

How did others do yesterday?

Re: It's Greek To Me - OUT OF BUSINESS

I have mixed feelings about them going under. I'm not surprised at all; they were never busy and their prices were very disproportionate to the quality.

That being said, every couple of weeks when we'd feel like a salad, we did like their spinach and greek salads (with calamari) and their hummus/pita. Also, their lunch specials were good and came out quick (great when you have a toddler).

I am excited to see what will replace it... It's a great space with a lot of potential. Would love to see Satis, Thirty Acres, Roman Nose, Orale and some of the other awesome additions bring on more competition :)

"Free and easy access to the city should not be sacrificed for some small time art events" and "I'll refrain from using the nearest path entrance and be late for appointments because of a spray painted fridge or because Nintendo Power Glove are playing" are pretty a-hole comments.

We all have places to go and people to see, and often I've needed to traverse that area during rush hour when it's Groove on Grove. Could it be better organized and laid-out? Sure, and there are some good ideas already posited here. But it's just not that big of a deal to warrant disparaging comments about the artists and musicians.

Me thinks you're cutting your appointments a little too tight if coming up a different Path exit is going to make you blow your wad. Quit your bitching, enjoy a taco or delicious ice cream sandwich and chill out.

I apologize for my post on the Healy sign. It was a complete joke, but I realize it was inflammatory and unfair. Sometimes the smiley emoticon doesn't suffice.

Regardless, we are very excited to try. Welcome!

This is awful. We bring our daughter in there all the time to toddle around and play with their cat. I keep dwelling on how nice they are and how this could happen.

Is Omar the owner with the long hair? I've seen him the most and he's always so sweet to us.

We are donating regardless.

Amazeballs... LOL! Best term EVER!

I spoke with the one staff member there for a bit and asked how it's going and a few questions about the 2 locations.

The JC location doesn't have a bread oven yet, so they are using the Hoboken location to basically make 2X the amount of bread, and then hoofin' it over to JC every day. She said it can be a little stressful in the Hoboken location because of that. The other things that she thinks they may change is at the Hoboken location there's a toaster oven and warming plate for them to use for customers; JC doesn't have those yet.

Just some interesting intel. I imagine these improvements will come with time and once they get settled in JC (and making more $$$).

So far we have zero complaints...amazing (or amazeball) addition to JC.

My only suggestion: they need labels for their food...almost every customer has to ask, "what's that?"

Also, JC really doesn't lack nightlife. There are places as varied as the Beer Garden, Powerhouse, Pint, Lucky 7s, Barcade (better than the BK one) and much of downtown is walking distance to Hoboken.

Saying JC has nightlife is like saying your crazy uncle who is able to pull coins out of kids' ears is a magician. Come on. You bring any Manhattan or even Brooklyn person to JC and take them out, they will be disappointed. There is absolutely no club scene in downtown JC. The bars are a drag and mostly empty.

The powerhouse lounge is a middle aged real estate meeting on most nights.

Beer garden is dead by 1:00 on most non special event nights.

So if your idea of a nightlife is playing with sticky controls in a dank, crowded barcade when the machine actually works and accepts your quarters, then yes, JC has a nightlife.

I enjoy our disputes but for the first time, I have to agree with you. JC night life is pathetic and pretty lame. LOL @ the powerhouse.

The place near grove should not be turned into the 100th pizza place in downtown. It should be downtown's first actual club - how great would that be...

Back in the 90's DTJC was full of night life, but their is a new breed of folks DTJC and I actually do not think a club will sit well with them in their own backyard. Clubs attract folks from other wards, and we can't have that. Most think this is some sort of suburb.

I think clubs will work well over at 440. Maybe the city can make that the club district... :)

No dingy clubs. I'm talking about high class clubbing, the likes of the le bain or pacha. Good DJs, swanky establishments, good dance music, dress code, admission and cover, security, etc. JC offers unparalleled views of NYC and clubs can take advantage of that. This type of clubbing experience will be aimed towards the condo owners/renters in the luxury highrises.

OMG, that sounds like my worst nightmare! :)

I do believe the age difference of the demographics between Brooklyn and JC is a huge aspect to this. When my husband and I first moved here, we would get bored of the options for eating and going out. But now that we are married, bought a house and have a toddler, I'm very very happy with the progress the city has made with the new establishments (Barcade, Roman Nose, Satis, 30 Acres...) and more to come. But that's because we're in our mid-30s and our lives have shifted. Brooklyn has significantly more of the 20-something crowd, just graduated and still out till the wee hours. JC is a bit "sleepier" than that, but we love that now.

As a related aside to the general idea of gentrification, another aspect of JC (speaking only from downtown where I live) I appreciate is how well a place like Key Food has managed to cater to a wildly diverse customer base. You'll have upper-middle classers buying organic inventory up the wazoo in front of the guy who needs to fill out the WIC form and buying main-stream canned food. I really think that store has done a great job of providing inventory and an experience for all, and I think it'll make them a success.

Re: Flooding in Jersey City

I'm confused. Isn't HP East of Monmouth? You imply the 2007 was the more severe storm, and "even" then it didn't touch the area of 9th West of Monmouth, but then you say that the NY Times map is inaccurate cause it shows 9th "up to" HP being flooded. So what part of 9th flooded in 2007, if not West of Monmouth and not as far east as HP?

All I know is that we walked around that entire area and saw numerous people pulling out furniture and personal items and putting them on the street. Of course, it wasn't EVERY house, but I believe it was enough to justify the "general" area that the NY Times map is outlining.

Re: Flooding in Jersey City

The NY Times map simply says "approximate area inundated by the storm" - they're not making claims about specific amounts, as far as I can tell. We certainly were "inundated," and we are West of Marin AND North of Columbus, but I guess "inundation" is too qualitative of a term.

5th near Monmouth had 6 inches over the sidewalk for Sandy and a foot for Irene... so yeah, it's definitely NOT over-estimating flooding...if anything, it's underestimating it.

I wondered the same thing. My husband and I never even bat an eye if we get less than an inch, which is what they predicted. However, this morning I noticed that they had a flood advisory because of high tide and the warning did mention basements possibly being affected. Sure enough, our shower was backed up. I can't believe this little rain would do that.

I've wondered the exact same thing. I posted about it recently in the Made with Love thread.

Pecararo's is great for breads, but if I want a good cookie or slice of pie, there are not many options. Cocoa's new location is a bit far for me when I just want to stop in when I have a sweet tooth craving.

Re: Made With Love - CLOSED

I really wanted this to succeed, so we gave it several tries. We entertained using them for our wedding cake years ago, but she couldn't get herself organized, and we had to go with another bakery.

We've stopped in there/visited their farmer's market stand every few mos since they opened. At first, I could argue the quality warranted the costs. We like to eat organic as much as is feasible, so I respected what she was trying to do and sucked up the costs for a good cookie or scone every now and then.

But over the last year, quality really declined. Stuff started to taste old and stale. After 3-4 attempts, we stopped buying from them. I'm sorry they couldn't make it, but am excited to see what might come instead (please no pizza, Asian fusion, bodegas/delis, hair/nail salons :)

We need a good bakery downtown. I love Pecoraro's for some sausage bread and croissants, but if I want a good homemade pie or cookie, I think options are minimal (especially in the winter when the markets/food stands are not open).

Sometimes 3/4 stars are reserved for Per Se or 11 Madison Park caliber restaurants. But, yes, it is amazing. If you're not seeing many people there, you must not be driving at the right time. It's usually a wait on the weekends.
