Re: Parking Too Close to Crosswalks
Home away from home
Home away from home

I've seen this happen before in the same neighborhood as vigilante. I parked my car one morning after the street sweeper went through. I was the first car on that section of the block so I parked right up to the "No parking sign" so everyone could stagger behind me.

A women pulled up behind me but left a lot of space; just enough to fit maybe a Smart car. As she got out if her car I said she should move up so more cars could fit. And she replied, "But then my car won't be in front of my house."

Seriously?

Didn't the Hudson County Court tell her the same thing? She agreed to ship them to California but they wound up getting boarded in JC. She went and got them during a storm without anyone saying a word. And here we are again. She'll agree to give them away and the same shite will happen. This story is just repeating itself.

Re: Do I need a permit to replace a hot water heater?

Yes, you do need a permit but you can do it yourself instead of having the plumber do it if you have time and want to save some money. The permit office is by the Exchange place and you need two permits: one for plumbing and one for fire marshall for the gas water heater. We had to pay bit extra because our house was historic. I forgot exactly how much we paid but it was roughly 1/2 cost of what the plumber charged. It makes sense since their time is factored into the cost. Overall, it wasn't that painful to do but it was bit of hassle to arrange the inspectors to come to the house. Luckily for us, the inspector showed up first thing in the morning. Once they approve the heater, they put stickers stating that it passed the inspection.

Wow-- AND they have to inspect first? Just wow.

What happens if your hot water heater breaks in the middle of the night? This city is officially batshit insane.

I was under the impression that I did. One plumber said I didn't need to get one. Does anyone know? I'd rather not give the bldgs dept any extra shakedown money if I don't have to.

I drive down Monmouth to Coles and take Hoboken Ave (the hill) to 139. This way I avoid the tunnel traffic all together.

Re: Auto Repair Shop

I had a great experience with A M Auto Repair on 6th Street. My car failed inspection (emissions) because of the catalytic converter. I took it to Sears, Pep Boys, and Firestone. I was quoted between $1500-1800. I took it to A M and they did it for a little over $900. Passed inspection without a problem. I'm definitely going to use them instead of the chain auto shops.

Re: Key Foods - Jersey & 3rd

Just an FYI to those of you who shop at Key Foods-- check your receipt carefully! I bought five items the other day and didn't realize til I got home that two of the items had scanned higher than the sale price.

I brought my receipt in the next day. At first they kind of gave me a hard time, saying I should have brought the actual items back (really, on produce?). I've never had to do that at A&P or Shoprite. I brought the cashier over to the items and showed her the signs. She scanned the items and they came up the wrong prices. The owner/mgr was called and didn't want to refund my money at first because I hadn't brought back the items but I pressed the issue.

I think the store is a vast improvement over C-Town but I was a little put off by the customer service. I'll still shop there but I'll check the receipt before I leave the store.

Wow-- I pay close to $4k on a one bedroom (675 sq ft) downtown (no abatement). I bought in 1997. My taxes have doubled in 15 years.

Why are you complaining about people taking the bus exactly? Are you saying only people who have difficulty walking should take the bus?

I'm on 8th Street. They just left 5 minutes ago.

Has anyone heard of property taxes actually being lowered? Or is this just a ruse to raise them again?

I understand gas prices are through the roof but why completely alienate Heights customers? Instead of flat out saying, "We won't deliver to you" how about adding a small delivery fee? A few people may grumble but a lot of places are adding them. Store owner keeps a customer and customer gets a yummy pizza.

I had a party at The Merchant. Nice room and reasonably priced packages. Just beware of the parking situation.

I was told my guests could park for free at the lot on Montgomery. Our party started at 8pm. Not all of out guests arrived on time. At 9pm my guests were told there was no more parking and they had to park on the street. The manager "fixed" the problem by allowing people to keep their keys and "let themselves out" of the lot. That was not cool!

The person/company that owns the embankment along Sixth Street.

I'm not sure what it was like this weekend but this past winter was horrendous. Some kind souls dug a path (a very creative one on Erie). I really wish the city would fine owners of "abandoned" property.

Looking for a dentist with Saturday office hours in JC or anywhere in Hudson County. It would be a plus if they take Delta Dental.

I stopped going to Ibby's a long time ago. I never liked their service and it seemed like they'd only deliver to Hamilton Park if they felt like it. "Sorry, we don't deliver there." "But you did last week." "Sorry, we're not delivering there."

Gypsy Grill gets my business. The food, service, and service is all around better than Ibby's.
