Re: Staff Parking in JC?
Home away from home
Home away from home

I have a different issue with them.

Earlier this week several cars with "OFFICIAL BUSINESS" signs on the dashboards were parked on my street, and so I wasn't able to move my car to an appropriate spot. Plus, not only did 2 cars take up parking spots on the street, one car (with aforementioned sign) parked behind mine was spared a ticket for street cleaning while the JCPA enforcer oh so kindly bestowed one upon me.

Is this a case of selective enforcement? Maybe I should just print up one of those signs myself and keep it permanently on my dashboard!

Holy cow! Thanks for the heads-up! I was thinking of driving to JSQ and parking in one of those lots.

With the Navrati festival this & next weekend, I'm afraid there won't be any parking spots on the streets or in the lots. I guess it's the PHAT train and YLT for me this Friday!

The episode showing this house aired last night on HGTV. Don't know when it will air again.

Anyone else catch it?

It aired at 2:30 this morning? Who the heck is up at that time? Oh wait, I am.

I wish I'd known about it. Hopefully they'll air it again.

Re: Uniforms policy crackdown riles parents in Jersey City

I didn't know they instituted uniforms in JC public schools. At Academic, we had to adhere to a dress code.

Frankly, I don't think uniforms and dress codes make a difference in the students' behavior. We had countless discussions about this in high school, and even a few of our teachers agreed that a child's personal/familial/social values determine his behavior, not his outfit.

I couldn't make it to the meeting myself precisely because it was 9/11. Anyway, these meetings generally have a small turnout. I'm glad to hear last night had a larger turnout than last month's meeting.

I was also surprised by the smallish turnout, but it was more than showed up for the August meeting. I'll be an optimist and think that maybe since it was 9/11 people were with family and friends at memorial type things.

Is there a discount for JC residents? I'm still pissed about paying full retaill price for the last event at LSP.

We have reached out to the Councilman, who has reached out to the Chief of Police. We expect a report back shortly on steps they are going to be taking. Once we get that information, we will share it with you. Very best, Jennifer K ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: REDACTED Date: Aug 23, 2006 1:12 AM To All, I have received some startling information regarding criminal behavior in our neighborhood to share with all of you from my neighbors. Various neighbors have told me about our area criminals who have been around lately helping themselves to our neighborhood! Seems that these creeps had quite an eventful weekend this past weekend 8/19--8/20/2006!. Besides the 8th Street/Hamilton Park mugging at 11:30pm this past Friday night 8/18/06, there have been other criminal acts! Basic on 8th was broken into (again in less that a month)overnight on Wednesday 8/16/06. The following stores were broken into over this past weekend 8/19/06--8/20/06: Go Gourmet on Jersey Avenue : Again in less than a month. The store installed a dead bolt since the last break-in. This time the door was badly damaged, but the thugs did not gain entry. The police responding to the store's call Monday morning told the workers there that a lot of the police officers are on vacation so there is not a lot on duty to take care of all these break-ins. What??? The store street area does not have proper street lighting, it is very dark. The workers told me they are afraid and very scared when they leave to go home after work. GabaBoolz: Broken into, stole equipment/machinery. Kome Gashi: Broken into, robbed. Balance Hair Salon on Erie (near the police station). Home on 9th: A house was broken into and robbed on 9th Street across from the Hamilton Park Nursing Home. House on 8th: A young couple's house had thugs trying their front door. The couple heard their door being tried. Thugs fled when they came out to look and see. A woman's bicycle was stolen from the front of her home on Coles, Monday 8/21/06 in the afternoon around 2pm. She went to the Laundromat on 7th. As she headed back home up Coles, she heard a bicycle coming down Coles towards her with the rider ringing the bicycle's bell.....she recognized the bell and realized it was her bicycle and stopped the kid and got him off her bike and called the police.

Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham pulled Jersey City out of the program because he didn't think the $2 million the city received was worth the hassle - or the label of a "distressed city."

Ward E Councilman Steve Fulop said he agrees.

"I think the distressed cities program shows a lack of pride," Fulop said. "And from my point of view Jersey City is not a distressed city.

"The first thing we should pursue is cost-cutting, which hasn't been done at all to any great degree," he added.

I agree that the city needs to cut costs, but since this is something that our current administration doesn't seem to prioritize, I believe that the $8M state aid is worth the silly label that will be slapped on JC. Besides, our city has been called worse.

The best part about receiving the aid, besides the obvious, is the necessary checks and balance that will be instituted as a condition for receipt of the monies:

Quote:

The biggest drawback to receiving the aid, now called "Special Municipal Aid," is that hiring and promotions would have to justified to and approved by the state Local Finance Board, Healy said.

What could be better than the admin having to justify its hiring and promotions? How quickly can we get this aid?

Justi, at the last Downtown JC Watch meeting, Steve briefly mentioned his problems obtaining crime stats (among others) from the former police chief, and that he expects to have a better working relationship with the new one.

Perhaps you can get these stats directly from the JCPD as a concerned resident.

I wonder who writes and proofreads these letters that accompany the tax bills/statements. The last one (dated July 17), repeatedly stated that Jersey City provides quality service. To whom?

Quote:

(...) Through their efforts and with the support of the Municipal Council, the potential municipal tax levy was reduced by over $25 million dollars (sic), while maintaining and improving a high level of service.

Just enter the first 8 chars of your address in the Property Location field. It should give you the tax history of the property, thought it may be broken down by owner/account.

We have a 4-unit condo building as well, and one rep for each unit is an officer (via election) of our condo association.

We had pre-existing condo association bylaws, which we haven't really referred to, as we have not encountered any real problems that would merit having to refer to 'the book.' We're also very lucky because we get along with our neighbors very well, and each meeting is more of a party for us. The accounting is done by our Treasurer (the only person who really does any work, God bless her), and any decision about maintenance, repairs, improvements, etc is voted on by each member.

Did your building recently condo-ize, or did you buy an existing condo?

Re: Healy and emails

This is absolutely ludicrous. Why bother posting an email address on the website if he (or his staff) has no intention of reading or responding?

When I worked for a NJ Senator last year, we were responsible for responding to every single letter, email, fax, phone call, and office visit by a constituent. Even when we had no recourse or official response, we still made it a point to respond and refer the constituent to the proper agency or individual.

We need a true leader in Jersey City, one that will help us become the world-class city that we have the potential to be. In the meantime, we have to make this embarrassment of a Mayor accountable for his actions, or in this case, his lack thereof.

My apologies to Dom's friends & family.

I wasn't the one that turned this into a race issue. I agree. It is not, and shouldn't be turned into one. I was merely responding to repeated generalizations made by this one poster against my "community." I wasn't going to let it slide, just as I wouldn't let any racist comments against other ethnic groups slide.

Anyway, RIP Dom. This time of the year must not be easy for those whom he left behind.

Wow, great job, pchops! The neighborhood watch (and JC itself) is lucky to have you as its leader.

Quick question though, and this is not to undermine the JCPD: isn't it their job to run around, investigate, and interview potential witnesses? I understand that we ought to help the JCPD by reporting incidents and such, but for you to actually have to look for witnesses and interview them using your own time & resources?

Thanks Butchcjc for the post. I will email you separately because your descriptions are valuable to the Downtown JC Watch.

For others who have valuable information, please contact the Captain's office immediately at 201.547.5470 as well as the Neighborhood Watch. Though the police may be satisfied with their apprehension, we are aware of a few juvenile hangouts and your descriptions are needed.

If you witness a crime and the police respond, PLEASE, PLEASE, go up to the police and give a witness reports.
If you are uncomfortable in approaching the police at the time of an arrest/investigation, you can call the 201.547.5477 number and say, "I am standing/residing a block away from the arrest and would like to give a witness account. However, I do not want to approach the police. Can the investigating officer call me at this number."

THEN, the following day, email the Captain or the Community Relations Officer at jcpdeastdistrict@yahoo.com.

For those residents in other wards, contact your councilperson and find out who your Captain and Community Relations Officer is.

It's important to offer your witness account. For example:
The last robbery (official term for mugging) at Hamilton Park had 1 witness who only saw the suspects for a fleeting moment. I went to Hamilton Park and did my own investigation and found a better witness who was in front of the victim for 2 blocks as the suspects followed them. This better witnenss did not come forward when the police arrived. Thus the fact that they were juveniles and the correct clothing description was lost.

Please, please please offer your information to the police at the time of the crime/suspicious activity. If you are pressed for time, hand them a business card/paper w/contact info. They will call you.

Sorry so long....

Re: Assault/wilding incident on 9th and Erie

From dictionary.com:

wild
intr.v. Slang wild?ed, wild?ing, wilds

To go about in a group threatening, robbing, or attacking others: ?Police said that the youngsters... were part of a larger group of teenagers who were ?wilding,?their slang for terrorizing and bullying? (Maclean's).

As for the GAs, the point that BM and I were trying to make is that they ARE around, and if you believe that they're not -- simply because you personally have not seen them -- then all you need to do is pick up the phone or write them an email and ask them directly whether or not they're still patrolling JC. It's not fair that you are making these assumptions, which are clearly wrong, without making an effort to unearth the facts.

Quote:

glx wrote:

No thanks, I have no reason to bug them. I'm sure they have better things to do.

I just found it comedic that they're being "notified" as if they're some official agency when their main benefit (and crime-fighting technique) is being visible and they aren't being seen.

If people have seen them around, more power to them. They showed up in force when the press was around and it sounds like now every once in awhile a couple will show up here and there. I think we can all agree they aren't doing much good at 5pm on Grove Street. If they're around, I think we'd all sure like to see them walking around HP or VVP in the evening/late nights when most of these incidents seem to be taking place... Otherwise, they might as well be the cops.

PS - what's "wilding", anyways?
