Re: Jersey City agency set to seize city man's home, force him to pay to clean up contamination left by

This is really messed up...

Quote:

He says he didn?t know the storefront was once Grant Cleaners & Dyers, which operated on the site from 1953 until as late as 2008, according to property records.

And according to an environmental assessment done on behalf of the JCRA, the soil and groundwater at 445 Ocean Ave. is contaminated with perchloroethylene, or PCE, a chemical used frequently by dry cleaners.

The JCRA, in an April 8, 2011 letter sent to Ibrahim, stated he is responsible for the cleanup costs, which could range from $206,040 to $361,560, according to the environmental assessment.

?I said, ?I just bought this house. I don?t know anything about this,? ? Ibrahim said. ?They said, ?No, you?re the owner now.? ?

Not only did Ibrahim not know the property once housed a dry cleaner, he said he didn?t even know it was in a zone slated for redevelopment, a declaration that can lead to seizures via eminent domain.

The attorney who handled the closing of the sale declined to comment.

The JCRA wants Ibrahim?s property and the other two row houses and two vacant lots on the same block so it can create a low-income housing complex. It has offered Ibrahim $72,000 for his property. A hearing in front of the county Condemnation Commission is set for tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. at the Brennan Courthouse, 583 Newark Ave., in Jersey City.

Robert Antonicello should be ashamed of himself for screwing this guy over so bad.

Cory's not anonymous... He outed himself as the guy that used to work at a record store at the mall on 440:

The embankment would likely have a pedestrian bridge over Marin and would connect to the waterway:

Chill Out Pizza Lounge

Home away from home

Anybody been to this "Chill Out Pizza Lounge", "an amazing two in one restaurant which serves top class Italian Food and Pizza" where Carmine's Pizza Factory used to be at Brunswick and 1st?

Any good? Looks pretty generic, but sounds odd to me.

You are so wrong. People living next to the Embankment dread the idea of a park. Do you want to have the high line in your back yard?

The park will be great for people who want to go though downtown and from properties nearby but not affected by it. Just wait until the complaints about the park from people living right on it. Some houses actually touch the Embankment.

One more thing... You might not have noticed, but the Embankment forms a ramp to the heights. It is nearly ground level at Marin, and around 3 stories high at the end, where it used to convert to a bridge to the heights. It is really quite a fantastic structure if you step back and look at the big picture.

The Embankment as a park/light rail/walking path would make it easier and nicer for people from the heights to get to the mall, Shoprite, and PATH at Newport.

It is quite different from your typical property.

People who say the Embankment is small don't know what they are talking about. The Embankment is 50% larger than Hamilton Park. It stretches from the Newport Mall, all the way to Healy's Tavern at the Western edge of Downtown. It is worth way more than 7 million. Hyman knows this and won't let it go for anywhere near that paltry amount. The city would be best off letting him develop it in conjunction with the Embankment Coalition and the city planners to create something special and workable for the city. The city can't afford to buy it and develop the Embankment on its own. The best they can do is zone it as "Transportation Only" (pedestrian, bike, or trains) and prevent anything from happening until future generations can afford to turn it into a light rail. Look at the Embankment next to Hamilton park on the map and you can see how big it is:

Jumping in front of a subway or train is definitely one of the more inconsiderate ways to kill yourself.

It's not fair to the conductor to make them your killer, it's not fair to the bystanders, and it's certainly not fair to the janitors.

People should kill themselves in the privacy of their own homes, it's only polite.

nuisance: "an act not warranted by law, or an omission to discharge a legal duty, which act or omission obstructs or causes inconvenience or damage to the public in the exercise of rights common to all His Majesty's subjects".

Street cleaning is not an excuse to break the law. Get a garage spot, plan your parking better, or walk farther, but the laws are in place for a reason; safety.

Perhaps the cop has seen you repeatedly breaking the law. If a standard ticket doesn't work, they have to make you change your behavior in another way.

Team up with Bayonne to plan a new subway line.

I suggest following the route marked out in black here:

I hope they're not going to use this video as directions to their restaurant... that's a very roundabout route. Maybe they want people to avoid Wayne street.

Suing the bank is all the rage:

Should you sue your lender?

Homeowners sue banks for not modifying home loans

At least threaten to sue. You have to play hardball with the banks.

Indio's is on 1st Between Brunswick and Colgate in the village.

Living on any block with a bar can take some getting used to and will at times be annoying, but Indios is usually full of very nice and decent people.

The bar on Bay and Erie is the Keyhole, which is also full of good and cheerful people.
