I personally don't think that's "bug bucks" money for a dept head, especially. They work well over hrs/week, particularly in division like AC where the public calls in problems 24/7 (as they should). Back to issue at hand...is anyone else LOL'ing at this new Fulop "submit your application" stunt?? Do we really think anyone who applies seriously has a chance?

More phony baloney masquerading as "transparency" from Fulop.
Does he really think we believe that any of these applicants will get fair review and that he'll pick 1 from that pool? And not for nothing, but there was a capable and still willing candidate who was in the run-off. Not a bad choice at all.

The Duncan Ave Neighborhood Association will be hosting the County Traffic Engineers and NJTPA as they present their plans for design enhancements for JFK Blvd from Communipaw-Bond St. that are aimed at improving safety. This project is the result of a $3million grant that came out of a resident driven push after our neighbor Stephen Clifford was killed in 2013. All are welcome, but residents on the Communipaw-Bond part of JFK are encouraged to attend.
Details: Tues. May 17 - 6-9pm. Presentation begins at 7pm, followed by Q&A. St. Paul's Church Hall, 38 Duncan Ave between Bergen & JFK Please obey zoned parking signs. We encourage residents to use mass transit or to walk to the meeting. This thread gives a little history.

IIRC, he also claims people will lose their homes due to a big jump in taxes. What he doesn't say (and fights against when called out on) is that those people he's protecting are a relatively small group of people, motsly in dtjc, who now have very high home values (and who would earn a lot of $$ if they in fact did have to sell). Not in all cases, but many of these people are also affluent and can likely afford the tax increase as well. Someone please correct me if I'm mis-stating this...I'm still learning.

Its not like the public bathroom is a social club. People go in to do what nature requires, clean up and get out.

Zones exist for a reason. 1 of them is so people who live in buildings with available garage space (regardless of cost) don't take street parking from residents who don't have such an option available to them to use. You moved here knowing you had space available at your building. So you need to use it, find a less expensive option to rent elsewhere or ditch your car. If you can afford your apt and your car, so you can afford the garage fee.

No, the greater neighborhood is not against it, but rather supports it. A handful of residents on the streets who's houses would border this are opposed entirely as they feel it will hurt their sunlight, and many other reasons they put forth. But the majority supported it for the most part - maybe a few elements of it we fought (like the giant video screens...4 x 75'x25'!!, and they cut way back on the parking they promised). We're interested in seeing it built.

Yes, anyone can use those two lots behind City Hall. However, Yvonne will argue that they don't have enough open spaces for the public. This is not true 95% of the time. I go to meetings there frequently, as do neighbors, and we have never had any issue parking there. Also, what the protesters are missing is that the Ordinance would actually be more likely to help them find parking around City Hall than not. First off, rarely would one need to be at a public meeting more than 3 hours. A new 3 hour window means that many residents without permits who refuse to rent parking in their buildings and opt instead for the current free parking from 3pm-10am the next day won't be on the street any longer. They instead will have to rent the garage spaces in their buildings as they won't be permit eligible - hence there will be less cars on the street. Also, this Ord. would reduce the number of cars also using the current free parking from 3p-10am to go into NYC. Lastly, I don't understand why the Council caved entirely, the compromise would have been to simply remove the zone around City Hall in this Ordinance.

Anyone can park for 2 hrs M-F between 8-5 in the permit areas.Do you need more than 2 hrs to eat lunch? Also, the 2 lots behind City Hall are free to park in during the evenings - for attending public meetings or for going wherever down there. True they might get redeveloped someday. But its still a ways off. Why is everyone missing this point?

Jersey City groups want national search for new chief planner
By Jersey Journal Guest Columnist on February 24, 2016 at 12:46 PM AN OPEN LETTER TO JERSEY CITY MAYOR STEVE FULOP A new era for Jersey City begins with the news of the retirement of longtime Director of City Planning Robert Cotter, planned for April 1, 2016. To make Jersey City the "best mid-sized city in America," we need to conduct a national search for another planning director who will also bring creativity, appropriate thought, vision and practice to the current state of our redeveloping city. The Downtown Coalition of Neighborhood Associations (DCNA) and our sister neighborhood associations and community groups throughout the city have long recognized the importance of proactive city planning. In this time of unprecedented growth, Jersey City's long-term success depends on its ability to deal with a complex set of conditions. Issues will include: outdated sewer and water infrastructure, increasingly overburdened mass transportation, a shortage of accessible and open green space and a rapidly growing need for safer streets for pedestrians and bicyclists. Now is the time to think forward, think new, and think big. The new Jersey City planning director is a key position in the ongoing transformation of our city into the "best mid-sized City in America" that you've often spoken about publicly. The position needs someone of world-class caliber, who understands and can manage the long-term effects of development; someone with a fresh viewpoint who is ready to chart a new course for the next chapter in our city's evolution. DCNA members, members of other community groups, and your fellow residents have one simple request of your administration: conduct a proactive and vigorous nationwide search for this key position, and hire the best qualified person you can find for director of city planning. Please seize this opportunity to leave behind a lasting positive legacy. It is likely the best legacy you can ever provide for the city that you (and we) love. Why do you insist everything should be free all the time? No, this is a PRIVATELY OWNED garage. They are entitled to charge for parking. And people coming in to the restaurants and bars should pay it and park there. If the businesses were better neighbors, they would paritally validate the parking and work out a deal with the garage that would be mutually beneficial. But instead, the Councilwoman wants to give away street parking to them (spaces without meters). This hurts residents in those zones and doesn't bring meter revenue to the city. She is not listening to her constituents on this one at all. There is absolutely no reason to give the bars/restaurants free parking, not when there is a perfectly good garage right there!!

Why is no one talking about the other piece of the ordinance change? Which is extending non-permit parking from 2 hours to 3 hours. WHY, Councilwoman? There is a perfectly open garage right at Grove street that restaurants and bars should be encouraging their customers to use. Instead you would rather give them free space?
