Re: St. Anthony's High School is Closing
Home away from home
Home away from home

Yes, sad, but the fact is the Coach Hurley's basketball empire was attached to a lackluster school. From accounts for students and former teachers, the school was used as a cover for a basketball factory. Sometimes jock culture and help a school attract students and develop morale. Too often it makes academics secondary.
The mission of the Catholic school in transmitting and defending the faith of its students and of exposing non Catholic students to the faith in a way to engender interest has been dead since the 1960s. The auto demolition of all the religious and monastic orders is part and parcel of this.
The hierarchy hates schools because they take work and require faith. The charter school industry is like heroine to pastors. He closes the school which had been creating a deficit for the parish of say 500,000 yearly. THen he rents it out to a local charter- call the Masonic Ethical Charter School whose values are diametrically opposed to Christianity. What does the pastor care? He now gets $40k per month in rent- income greater than his old deficit. He can pop the Veuve Cliqoue because now he does not even need to curry favor with those pesky parishioners who want to worship God. The pastor can now take even more vacations and ply his boyfriends/victims with bigger gifts.
When the Son of Man returns will there be any faith left on earth?

The only thing that shocks me is the information that Marie was 80! She had an incredible amount of energy, drive, enthusiasm and optimism. I would have guessed that she was a youthful 70. Requiscat in pace!

Russell was about the nicest guy you could ever meet. He always kept his cool when everyone else was losing it. Lux pertua luceat eum!

My wife and four year old daughter were half a block away and heard the shots in Lafayette Park which was crowded with kids! But hey, we have bicycle lanes! And we'll have a Science Hotel.

Above is the link to the Memorandum of Understanding. Esther Winter went through the trouble (FOIA request) and expense (over $200) to get a copy of it. Guess what? She got it after the vote. So much for transparency.

Although personally, a fan of Charter Schools, why did the Council act coy, to say it as politely as possible, and say it was undetermined whether the school was to be a Charter or a regular public shool?

Also, the hotel is described in terms that suggest it will also assert non profit status (provide lodging for science visitors etc). Corp. Counsel Jeremy said that it would be for profit.

So this new entity will have one member and owner, namely the Science Center. An LLC with only one member is treated as an entity disregarded as separate from its owner for income tax purposes (but as a separate entity for purposes of employment tax and certain excise taxes), unless it files Form 8832 and affirmatively elects to be treated as a corporation.

The Memorandum of Understanding which was not available on the City website or the JCRA website is complicated and promises to provide full employment for lawyers for many years should this plan go south. Isn't the litigation with Hyman over the embankment still ongoing? Didn't the litigation with Mocco over Liberty Harbor North last 15 years?

Mia's invocation of Mocco is apt. That was some sort of give away to Peter Mocco in the waning hours of the Cucci administration. The City spent years litigating it- won it, only to have politics or something settle it, I think, for almost a give away a second time.

Mia is also directly on point with all the other taxes that NYC has (occupancy tax, portion of sales tax).

I could get a devloper in there tomorrow to devlope it.

Don't we have a hot shot new city planner from Harvard who should be able to structure this. Also, I suspect, the Liberty Harbor Plan itself would permit good commercial developemnet.

And yes, the appraisal will not be worth the paper it is written on.

Newport (600 acres), all of Harsimus Cove, Colgate Redevlopment east of Hudson at the very least, all of Libery Harbor North and all devloment around the Morris Canal, all of LSP, all of the golf course, and all of Port Liberte are or were derelect and contaminated industrial sites built on fill. This 16 acres comes late to the game where there should be no question of its value.

The numbers are realistic.

A neighborhood that mixes medium and low rise like Liberty Harbor North (these 16 acres are part of Liberty Harbor Redevelopment Plan).

Well houses downtown are being sold for up to 3.5 million now. So can we say that the average row house downtown (average being noting special, 18 ft wide, four stories, brick, goes for 1.2).

Outside of downtown, average house goes for say 500K. So yea, I overestimated post reval bill which will probably range from 10k to 40k. I guess in suburban NJ (Montclaire etc) this counts for not being overtaxed. However, Jersey City really competes with NYC where these rates are outrageous. Residential tax rates in NY are minimal- NYC getting its revenue from commercial real estate and its income tax.

Please note that 44% of the city is already tax exempt. So yes- the City should not create any more untaxed land.

The City should also seek to get a payroll tax. Whitman changed the legislation to screw Schundler so that only Newark has the ability. This needs to be changed and JC needs to adopt it. If JC adopts a 1% payroll tax, that still leaves us very compeetitve since NYC's graduated rates start at 2.9 and go to 3.64. Also, Newark has a 2$ payroll tax.

Other things that need to be done is reduction of payroll, especially in the Fire Dept. and Police.

Re: Wow - LSC's Updated Plans for SciTech Scity

16 unimproved acres fronting on LSP would net at a minimum $80 million. Maximum maybe $160 million in current market. This is per my discussion with people involved currently in redevelopment. I briefly was a redevelopment lawyer before the insiders circled the wagon. Around 1998 or so, I was involved in a deal with Fisher Brothers who negotiated the sale of one acre in the Colgate Redevelopment zone for $11 million, a record at the time. I hear the going rate would be at least 20 million now for that area. Using the conservative market value of $80 million, if it were developed properly, it?s value would clearly be over one billion in ratables. The City should be looing to Battery Park City, Hudson Yards, etc for examples on how to do this. Again, using conservative figures, if the value of this 16 acre neighborhood was a billion, that would generate $20 million in property tax revenue yearly, or about 4% of the budget! 44% if Jersey City is already tax exempt. No more land should be allowed to be tax exempt! After the reval, the average homeowner will be paying $20k in annual property taxes. We will have moves like this to blame. Also, the LSC is a dysfunctional entity that does a very mediocre job so it is unlikely to perform well in this agreement
As always, cui bono?

I've always found Club Metro adequate. Nothing fancy like Club H. Locker rooms a bit cramped. But the price is right and the managment is responsive.

So true about this being a big city with a village mentality. I grew up at the shore, but whenever we met someone from Jersey City my parents would start yapping and it would always turn out that we all knew the same people. I moved here right after college in '88 (with some breaks), and somehow even with the massive turnover and a new transient element, what big guy says, is true- for a big city which is an integral part to the City, everyone seems to know everyone here (for better or worse).

Mea culpa, Webmaster!

Maybe this is a new policy or a policy that is inconsistently applied because I don't recall liturgical events or choir concerts that I have posted being taken down at all- let alone the next day. It would sometimes allow for a post hoc conversation on the same thread. I know you favor an aggressive editing style, e.g. you regularly combine threads that address an issue from very different, even opposite vantage points. Well it's your website and this is America so that's your prerogative.

Apologies again for impugning your motives.

Forget about the water temperature at Pershing?! Never! And actually for the first time ever, it is consitently appropriate at about 83 degrees. Who cares if the showers have peeling paint- at least the pool can be used for its purpose now.

I don't know, I don't see a big slide in the Department. There are some things that are great- the youth hockey program. The age group swim team is in its early stage but shows promise. There are no doubt hacks but also good. Berry Lane Park is a big new asset for example.

The high property tax issue for JC is the reason that we should enact a payroll tax. Schundler tried to but Whitman, in order to elect McGreevy, had the law changed so that only Newark is a city of the "First Class" with ability to tax. A 1% payroll tax would not hurt Jersey City's comptetiveness with NYC is between 3.5 and 4% and would be the same as Newark's. Moreover, there is a 50% credit, I believe, so that a 1% payroll deduction ends up being only a .5% cost to the taxpayer. I have not heard anyone mention this tax in years.

And, Whoelsecoulditbe, that is the exact time of snarky condescending quip that is evidence of what we're talking about. Would you make such anti Islamic statments? Or anti Jewish statements. Maybe- but probably not.
