Re: Internet options for downtown JC?

Home away from home

Are you looking for the absolute cheapest option?

3Mbps from Comcast + a HD over the air receiver for your TV.

Verizon can not compete with Comcast prices one-for-one. Only if you bundle will it be comparable. Comcast is the cheapest option in Hudson County. Pick whatever special Comcast has right now and go for it.

edit: and there is currently no NJ or Federal sales tax on internet service.

The metal pedestrian barriers in the photographs are from after the accident. No one knows what was there before, unless someone has a recent picture of the area. If you look at the truck in the background of the picture, you'll see a lot of debris from what looks like a wooden dock, matching up closely with what was along the water.

This is poor education on the cyclist's part. Citibike and the upcoming bike-share in Hudson County is only going to compound the problem of cycling inexperience on busy roads.

Nonetheless, the road markings in Hoboken do conform to conventional cycling wisdom.

If a drunk driver plows down a group on a sidewalk, it's a tragedy for the pedestrians and we're out calling for the driver's head on a stake.

If a drunk driver speeds through a parking lot and in to the water, we're suddenly sympathetic for the driver?

Why is the driver in scenario one wrong and the driver in scenario two unfortunate?

If "filling my self-esteem" includes being happy this guy didn't take out any innocent lives in his cloud of misjudgment, than yes, my self-esteem meter is at an all time high.

I understand?you?re pointing your finger solely at the victim because you don?t approve of the presumed manner in which he made his mistake. Thankfully, traffic barriers have no such bias and are equal-opportunity lifesavers. They exist precisely so that accidents such as this don?t become tragedies.

A missing automobile barrier between a large body of water and a parking lot is never a ?non issue,? and the people who failed to install one?and their lawyers?know it.

You are absolutely correct. I'm a big fan of natural selection. The lawyers will have a valid case, though.

NO. Not for cycling.

TAKE the lane on a two-way road / path with traffic going both ways. Cyclists have every right to the road as cars.

Keep to your RIGHT on a road with > two lanes with traffic going both ways. Allow faster traffic to pass in the other lane.

Keep to your LEFT on a one-way street. Reference any bike lane in Hoboken on a one-way. On roads without a bike lane, still keep to your left as there's less of a chance you'll get a passenger-side car door to the face.

Hundreds of people use that lot every day to board the NY Water Taxi. Dozens of RVs use the RV park behind the parking lot. Even more used that lot during the summer once Surf City reopened. The "potential danger" was a non-issue until you mix in post-NYE celebrations. Alcohol? Nah, can't be.

If your car is blocked in, and you can not leave your driveway, the JCPA can issue a summons. If you can not get in to your driveway, you're likely shit outta luck. Be sure to call or complain on the way out rather than on the way in.

Call the JCPA. My neighbor with a handicapped spot has called them before and has had success when his designated spot is blocked or taken (summons have been written.)

Re: Flooding Question - York Street
Home away from home
Home away from home

Is this the apartment building directly across from the south entrance to VVP? If so, I've seen that garden level apt listed several times in the last four years (I looked at it myself).

Ok, so that was a stab in the dark....

The flooding after Sandy was on York by Tommy 2 Scoops up to VVP. (York's flooding coincided with the flooding on Grand). Depending on the street, the surge stopped between Barrow and Grove. However, the Library -- on Jersey -- had its basement flooded. Even though Jersey did not get the surge water, areas below ground level DID (spaces that are no visible to the human eye walking down the street).

Take this for what it's worth -- but I would NEVER buy/rent a garden level ANYTHING in DTJC. I see there's some massive remodeling in the garden level apts going on on Grove between York and Montgomery. I feel sorry for the poor suckers who are going to get trapped down there in the next few years.

My only question is, if somebody is priced out of DTJC, why wouldn't they move to a place in the outer boroughs that is cheaper than DTJC but has subway access? Or even JSQ?

I'm a NJ guy, born and raised. Some are afraid to cross to this side of the Hudson, I refuse to go to the other side. That, and if I want to visit family, I'd get hit with tunnel/toll fares that are ever increasing or a MTA + PATH + NJTRANSIT ride smorgasbord..

As far as JSQ is concerned, I have yet to find an area that is attractive. There's no open space -- aside from the empty lots around the PATH -- and there's nothing that attracts me to the area. The Heights has the ice rink (hockey during the summer), the Reservoir, the view from Riverview Park, etc etc ..

Re: What does the future hold for The Heights?

Great thread.

After many years in DTJC, I bought in the Heights. For 1/4th less than a studio at Dixon Mills, I have a three bedroom condo, 11ft ceilings with crown molding, a recently remodeled bathroom/kitchen and a private 1000sqft backyard.

No amount of trendy restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, or farmers markets is worth cramming into a tiny box with no room to grow. As a late-20something looking to start a family soon, DTJC is out of the price range for the space needed and the Heights is the next logical step away while still staying relatively close to work. I surmise others who are just now discovering DTJC will choose to follow the route up the hill in the years ahead for the exact same reason.

edit: Oh, and I'm about 100ft above sea level now. Fuck you, flooding.

Re: Left Bank Burger Bar

The place looks nice, the options look appetizing, the staff is friendly, but there's one major problem: cooks can't get the burgers correct. There's no amount of remodeling that can change this fundamental fact.

Cooking a burger well done should be easy -- keep the burger on 2x as long as any of the others. When several attempts are made and all fail, there's a major issue with the back of the house.

To their defense, the burger was comp'd, they've only been open a few days, and the server was understanding.

.... but it's still pretty hard to #OOPS# up a well done burger several times in a row.

Well, the Hudson is not a river. If we were to consider it a river, it's a river that flows in two directions - north and south, depending on the time of day. So, calling it Left Bank is actually not wrong. Jersey City is the left bank, for about 12 hours of the day.

The Hudson does not flow in two directions. It flows in one direction. Part of it is tidal. "Tide" and "Flow" are very different.

Old news really.

The NY & NJ Governors "saved us" two years ago and averted a $2 to $2.75 fare hike. Instead, the hike will hit us $0.25 at a time, each year, around September.

And yes, this fare hike is to pay for 1 WTC cost overruns.

Can't help but laugh at those who spend $50 - $300 for a coffee maker. Single serve pods, packets, blah blah ... coffee has been brewed for centuries without electricity.

I'm all for (free) comedy shows close to home, but this one is tough. Last time I attended, the manager/owner was in the back of the room trying to encourage us to laugh more when the content was falling flat. Hopefully it was an off-night, but the whole thing felt very awkward.

The curb cut in front of the building is never used, so the block loses one parking space.

If a business opens there, does the neighborhood gain a parking space?

I've been looking for a new place and I'm considering that neighborhood.

Can anyone confirm exactly where it flooded? Between Varick and Jersey? Jersey and Barrow? All the above?

Is this is persistent problem? Does it affect the first floor or just the basements?

Thanks for the feedback.
