Re: Council approves introduction of budget that administration says won't raise taxes

Home away from home

I agree with collins to a degree. There's a WHOLE lot of deadwood among those lucky individuals employed by the city that should be let go. And furloughs are not enough to close a gap that wide. Anyone who has dealt with any of the city agencies knows what I mean. I'm always surprised when I deal with a city employee who shows a modicum of intelligence and can actually be of assistance.

I'd be really interested to know which two properties that are owned by the city are worth $17 million. And does that figure include the liquor licenses?

I'm a liberal democrat but our present city government is giving people like me pause.

Re: No Bar @ Barrow & Mercer

I wish that I understood why the standard response to anyone who expresses an opinion about improving local quality of life is "if you don't like it, move to the suburbs." I don't equate a bar in a residential neighborhood with the definition of a city.

I believe that what some of the posters are saying is go one block west to Jersey Avenue's commercial strip, or one block east to Grove Street or three blocks north to Newark Avenue and you've got many great options from which to choose. I LOVE going to bars and restaurants but I don't believe that they need to be on every corner of the city. The reason that zoning laws exist is to protect the integrity of a city or town as well as its residents. Unfortunately, our city government manipulates the zoning ordinances to suit their own purposes and fill their own wallets.

I applaud the OP and his efforts to do his best in that spot and I wish him well wherever he lands. If another bar does open on that corner, I hope that the next owner is as conscientious.

Yeah, I'm not getting this at all. It sounds like you paid either $26.50 or $32.50 for a pizza? And they would charge the same price for half a pizza?

Pardon my ignorance on the subject but will taxpayers be expected to foot the bill for his defense since he is on the police force?

Also, deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of this poor, innocent woman. Such a tragic, senseless loss.

It depends on the building. If your entire building was made FIOS ready, then your setup is relatively easy, providing that you're not going to be moving equipment to other locations in your house requiring re-wiring. Verizon told me to expect a four hour install. Was closer to two hours for everything. AND they showed up on time and the tech was very helpful in explaining the equipment.

I think the $3 difference may be that I elected to have a non-puplished number. I'll never understand why it costs more to not publish something but that's the way it is.

I'm a FIOS convert. $115/month for every cable channel imaginable. The picture is way better than cable. Also have high speed internet which is terrific, installed wireless network, and landline phone. Rate is guaranteed for 2 years and no contract. The happiest day of my life was when I turned in my Comcast boxes.

It feels like there are a number of people who are angry because they can't get something for nothing. Open an account or give them some regular business and I believe that you'll be satisfied with the service. No business owner can be successful by just accommaodating every one who walks in off the street and asks you to perform a service for free, especially in Jersey City. Put yourself in the other person's shoes!

Yes to the pre-paid labels. Yes they do FedEx and UPS pick-ups and drop-offs. I use them a lot. If you establish an account with them and have packages sent there, you avoid the threat of stolen parcels left on your doorstep. I find their rates reasonable. Plus they have a copy service.

Re: JC to Bayonne???

Home away from home

I live in downtown JC and I like Bayonne though I don't have children so schools are not a concern for me. One big difference I've noticed is that the everyday politeness level is much higher there. Service industry people say "excuse me" and "thank you" when you're their customer. Outside of tip-driven services in JC, it's a rarity here. You definitely need a car to live in Bayonne and if you have one, you can drive the ten minutes into Jersey City when you're going out for dinner.

But my best advice would be to try to spend some time (during the day and evening) in both areas and see what appeals to you.

Anyone who has anything invested in this city whether it's financial, your children's education or your own personal well-being and lifestyle can't alllow this to continue. Councilwoman Flood is a disgrace. All you have to do is vote in the next election. Please, please don't allow this kind of behavior to be rewarded with re-election.

"You could give some JCListers a pot of gold and they would complain that it was too heavy to carry, while others would be insulted for not getting the gold, and others would start a diatribe on the human rights and environmental horrors of gold and diamond mining and animal poaching and how horrible it is to wear jewelry and eat meat. Why diamond mining and animal poaching - because it has nothing to do with the original pot of gold and that is the path that many of the of the discussions take here. And now someone will make a comment about the PATH and roads less traveled because the word path was mentioned in the previous sentence ."

+++1 - The original poster just wanted to know if a church that is open around-the-clock still existed. Why did that simple question generate so much hate? If we want this city to improve, why not start with supporting each other? Believe me, I'm no saint but the level of discord in this thread is absurd.

I have to say that I also have had very positive experiences with PostNet. They're inexpensive and provide great services like copying, mail receipt, faxing, etc. One stolen package would more than pay for the yearly fee and the peace of mind is worth it. Plus you're supporting a local business if you choose to use them.

I also use a Britta filter pitcher and the water usually tastes great. I can tell when the filter needs to be changed because the water starts to take on a slightly metallic taste. I gave up my bottled water habit because my conscience got to me re: all of the plastic that I was going through. I've used Britta for years and am satisfied.

Re: CITY DISTRIBUTES LAYOFF & DEMOTION NOTICES TODAY

Home away from home

I'm genuinely sympathetic to anyone who loses their job in this economy and am really supportive of the officers who do their jobs, lay their lives on the line and perform their duties with pride and valor. But it's hard to feel sorry for the three or four cops who stand 30 feet away from the intersection at Dickinson High at noon and 3 p.m. when the kids get out and run wild, dart in and out of traffic and cause incredible mayhem. It's also hard to muster sympathy for a union that is so closed minded and uncooperative. Maybe some of the too-many management level police officers should spend time analyzing who in their ranks are the deadwood and save the jobs of the truly deserving men and women.

Re: Park & Sixth Comfort Food on Grove Street

Home away from home

I think that what we're trying to say is that we're happy to have a great alternative in the neighborhood that offers really good takeout and we're trying to be encouraging to the owners and workers. Personally, I think that the music is inconsequential and is probably on for the folks that work there. I believe that the majority of their business is not for eat-in clientelle since 3 or 4 tables plus a 4-stool counter could never generate enough profit to pay the rent and worker salaries and cover the costs of the food that they're producing. After a 10 hour workday, I don't especially relish the thought of going to NYC or Elizabeth for some good takeout. My guess is that we're simply trying to be encouraging.

Mayor Healy acknowledged there's a budget crisis? He and his minions have ruined the finances of this city and now he's decided that this is the solution to fix the budget? My guess is that none of his cronies will be affected by merging the JCIA & DPW. And if any of them are, he'll move them.

And sorry to go off-topic but what the heck do the editors at the Jersey Journal do? And don't the reporters ever bother to do a simple software spelling/grammar check?

"Last month Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy announced last month..."

Sounds like Healy wrote it himself.

I'd hate to see A&P go. I know the prices are higher but it's clean, it has a decent selection of most items, the produce is very good and it's really nice to have a cashier say thank you when they hand you your change. I'd have to find a new place outside of the city to shop if they close. I couldn't go back to Shop Rite.

Stopped by tonight for takeout soup and sandwich and it was really terrific. Homemade chicken noodle soup was just about perfect, especially with the bitter cold weather. And the Eli Manning (roast beef, roasted garlic and horseradish sauce) sandwich was good as well. Happy to have a new option like this in the area. I recommend giving it a go.

Does anyone know what happened to the theft of unemployment insurance charge? Is it still pending? Seems to me like that's a pretty serious offense that should mean dismissal from a county job.

Went for the first time this Saturday. Have to concur with sassinak re: the doughy, greasy dumplings. But I found the pork soup to be very good. Chunks of pork on-the-bone and I thought that the stock was actually quite well done. The folks behind the counter were very pleasant. Ducky's is OK in a pinch but I'll stick with Grand Sichuan, especially for dumplings.
