Re: JC School Board Election * April 20, 2010 * VOTE

Neverleft, a lot of people didn't vote on the question. They either missed it or didn't understand it. It's accurate to go with the higher number of 10925 (32,775/3). The number of people that actually stepped into a booth is likely to be slightly higher as some may of voted on less than 3 options.

The backboards may be acrylic. Been awhile since I've see one shatter.

As for the rubber, I am not hopeful.

They're currently working on stripping and painting the exterior wall and fencing.

Agreed, but do you really trust a federal regulator to be much better? Any system that requires the government to outsmart the banks on synthetic derivatives just isn't going to be effective.

While not color coded, there are already ratings for the risks in securities down by private firms like Moody's and S&P. I don't think the government getting involved in taking that role is even on the table. Perhaps the CPA would if implemented, but I doubt they would rate anything except in the most general sense (stock = risky, tbills = safe).

I really like the MapMyRide site for looking at new routes. You can see what other people have done, or make your own, add notes for hazards or notable spots. They have a version for runners as well.

SICULO, T-Bird broke out the ranking by OECD for you. When you have countries like Russia, Thailand and Mexico far exceeding the US in murders, it shoot a hole through your diversity theory, so to speak.

-

Violent crime in this country has been headed downward for at least a decade. It's still marks our poor and minority communities in lopsided numbers. Our history of segregation and marginalization (in education and financial empowerment) of those communities looks like a far better measure of violence than some notion of diversity. In reality, those violent communities show a clear lack of diversity, in race or class.

Fixing schools and getting people to work are what I see improving the situation. Having a million released felons on the street who can't find a job to support a family doesn't help much.

Manhattan isn't diverse? Whatever. Staten Island is included in the per capita numbers.

I'm guessing, but the most dangerous neighborhoods won't be marked by diversity, they'll be marked by a disadvantaged minority with failing schools, high unemployment and a young population.

But is that factually true?

Take Portland, Oregon and compare it to NYC. We lead in murder, but they have more rape and assault. Portland is overwhelming white. NYC may be one of the most diverse places on earth.

You can find examples of the opposite, but it just goes to show that there really isn't such an easy correlation.

A few unfortunately, but a good education and broad experience is a good start.

Pet theories about diversity being the harbinger of violence are not.

That's really a cop-out answer. There are plenty of places where multiculturalism isn't a factor that have violent crime rates far higher than the US. Saying that we're among the highest is total hyperbole. Could you folks please at least try to back up your statements with facts when you spout this nonsense?

Re: Incident on 7th Street Last Night

I've had the same 911 issue on Verizon, but that was a long time ago. Had the same runaround when I called the local precinct direct. Glad to see nothing has changed in two years.

You can make a complaint with the FCC for the E911 failure. http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm

For the local 7th St police desk complaint, I'm not sure. Maybe go to the local Captain's meeting and speak to him face to face.

Where on 7th was this? It seemed like there was a lot of activity and yelling earlier, but I was asleep by 3.

Naming and shaming them won't fix anything, but it sure will feel good! Posting on tripadvisor.com, google ratings or others is a good start. So who was it?

I had a similar experience one Easter weekend with Hertz. Only exception was they they actually drove out to Newark to pick up cars for me and another couple that got shorted. Took awhile, but I was just happy to get on the road.

Darmelia appears to be a relation of Diddy Lawrence who is in on charges for executing two people earlier in the year.

Quote:
Lawrence's sister, Darmelia Lawrence, 19, and his pregnant girlfriend, Crystal Caldwell, 28, said Monday that Lawrence was with them at their Woodlawn Avenue home at the time of the fatal shooting.

They said he went voluntarily to the police station Sunday to "clear his name" after he heard from a family member that the police wanted to question him.

"He turned himself in because he knew he did nothing wrong," Darmelia Lawrence said. "He wants to take the lie detector test to prove it."

Nice family. Makes me ill.[/quote]

Cities don't cede neighborhoods, so it's ridiculous and moot. Living next to a ungovernable war zone with a different name is not going to help your property values.

I love a rowdy bar as much as the next guy, but there's some truth in mentioning those three bars. I've been to all three multiple times. Until the threat exists to remove the liquor license of anyplace that proves to be a hazard (eg, felonies occurring in or spilling out of), there's not much that can be done.

I believe NYC regulates this with community boards. While that may have it's own problems, it's probably the only solution.

The short version is that the landlord is required to pay for painting if it needs it and it hasn't been painted in three years. If it's been more recent than 3 years, it's on you.

Holes or leaks and whatnot are definitely his responsibility.

Here's the actual code,

5:10-8.2 Interior Surfaces
(a) All floors, walls, ceilings and other surfaces shall be kept in good repair, that is, free from cracks,
breaks, split or splintering boards or woodwork, loose plaster, flaking or peeling paint or other materials.
Loose or defective sections shall be removed and replaced so that the joint between the repair and the
sound material is made flush and smooth.
(b) Floors, walls, ceilings and other exposed surfaces shall be kept clean, free from visible foreign
matter, sanitary and well maintained at all times. If necessary to accomplish the foregoing, these sur-
faces shall be kept painted, whitewashed, papered, covered or treated with sealing materials or other pro-
tective coatings as needed.
(c) Interior walls, ceilings and other exposed surfaces in units of dwelling space shall be kept smooth,
clean, free of flaking, loose or peeling paint, plaster or paper and capable of being maintained free of visi-
ble foreign matter and of vermin, and in a sanitary condition. If and when necessary to accomplish the
foregoing or any part thereof, such interior surfaces shall be spackled, painted, papered or otherwise pro-
vided with a protective coating appropriate for the surface material and this shall be done at least once
every three years unless it is clearly unnecessary. Painting or other provision of a protective coating shall
be the responsibility of the occupant and not of the owner when required more frequently than once every
three years as a result of the acts or omissions of the occupant, a member of his family or household or
his guest.
(d) Owners shall maintain records indicating the date on which any dwelling unit or part thereof was
painted or otherwise provided with a protective coating for six years. Said records shall also indicate the
name and address of the person who did the work, the nature of the work done and the cost. Said re-
cords shall be made available upon request to the Bureau or to any inspector performing an inspection of
the premises on behalf of the Bureau.
(e) Except where housekeeping services are provided, normal housekeeping as required for the
maintenance of cleanliness and sanitation within individual units of dwelling space of multiple dwellings
shall be the responsibility of the occupants and shall not, unless a hazard to the health, safety or welfare
of persons other than the occupants of the dwelling unit is thereby created, be the responsibility of the
owner.
(f) Interior surfaces of multiple dwellings that have not been certified as lead-free in accordance with
N.J.A.C. 5:17 shall be maintained in accordance with the applicable provisions of N.J.A.C. 5:10-6.6.
