Grumbling in Jersey City over parking spots lost to Citi Bike stations

JERSEY CITY — Bike enthusiasts are happy about the recent Citi Bike Jersey City expansion, but not everyone is thrilled about losing parking spaces for their cars.

A group of residents who live on and around Astor Place managed to delay installation of a Citi Bike station on nearby Park Street over parking concerns, while residents who live around the Danforth Avenue light rail stop are pressing the city to relocate the bike station installed there.

"They took the parking from us," said Regina Johnson Green, of Princeton Avenue

When oh when will the city learn to engage local residents BEFORE placing the stations? Whether you agree with the protestors or not, this is a problem that keeps happening.

It only works in terms of collecting complaints. But the RRC still does little to nothing to see that those complaints are resolved all the way through. You still have to chase them to make sure your complaints are investigated and resolved. Its maddening .I've had a broken sidewalk reports outstanding for TWO YEARS. RRC doesn't keep track if anything has been done or not. Totally useless to collect this stuff if there's no follow through to completion.

All that said, I hope the area develops as proposed and JSQ in general continues to see a nice boost in the coming years.
agreed. what a colossal waste of money if we are just talking about 200 feet. wouldn't it be cheaper to build an enclosed walkway with moving walkways to jsq?

That's a great idea!

I second these guys! Excellent work, very fast and reasonable prices. For a charge by the hour company, they do not waste time at all. And they were very friendly with great humor - made my move pleasant, and moving is never fun!

My Yelp review on them:
We used L&L Movers in Hoboken a few weeks ago and had an excellent experience! They were on-time/early, incredibly efficient and careful with our things, and were really nice guys with great senses of humor to boot. Its not often you get that last part, which made a yucky job a truly good experience. They were also great communicators and worked with me to explain the sequence of how they wanted to move things out when I asked, and asked how I could best be of help to them (even if just to stay out of their way).

I wish I could recall the forman's name - but the crew included Brian. That's the crew you want - they were superb. I also like that they bill by the hour and there are no extra charges for junk like wrapping glass, packing your tv safetly, or safely stowing art in the truck.

They are cash only, but many of the hourly moving companies are. They came in well under the estimated 8-9 hr. window they gave us (5.5 - 6 hours is what it took).

This post is in response to the "Man crossing Jersey City street struck and killed by off-duty Jersey City cop", but this thread is where it belongs.

As I drove around my neighborhood recently I was pondering that a full grid of all way stops at every single intersection and speed humps everywhere, which is where we're headed, is not usual in areas of our density. Hoboken seems to function and does not do this, there's plenty of streets that go many blocks without a stop, and there few humps, only by the projects. The answer to the puzzle is we don't have a street design problem, we have an enforcement problem. There's simply no credible threat to aggressive & speeding drivers.

I was heading S on Coles a couple of days ago when a car ran the stop at 15th st in front of me, then ran the stop at 10th making a left. I'm not talking about failure to completely stop, this was not even a tap. This driver had no fear at all there would be a cop to ticket them. We've all seen this. No amount of new stops will solve this problem. The scofflaw driver culture in JC needs an intervention.

Absolutely agree. Its all due to lack of enforcement that's created this chronic public safety issue. Many years ago, my car was totaled on Coles St as I was driving south.I did not have a stop sigh, but was going the speed limit. An SUV completely blew through the stop sign at 4th st and broadsided me.It was awful.

Come up to JFK Blvd if you REALLY want to see pervasive recklessness. Its very scary.

Exactly. I also live right by there. As a single woman, I am comfortable at this bar, which is a casual neighborhood pub. A "dress code" would be absurd there. This place is a very good business. They have been completely cooperative with the police, keep the place clean and are great neighbors. They cannot discriminate against whom they allow in, to a degree. And they do monitor loitering outside their doors, and keep the scene friendly and polite inside. There were not aware of their 1 employee's gang ties (she had a successful bartending career downtown in reputable places and wasn't some unknown in the industry). As soon as they learned of it, they told the police and terminated her.

So I am the one who requested the stop sign at that location a few years ago because it was right by a park. I agree there is an enforcement issue (all over downtown) but there are also some traffic and engineering issues too (at least according to the T&E department who have two new employees and rattled off 10 things they want to change about i when I raised it to them Thursday.) That is why I mentioned both.

While that location ia bad, we have a systemic issue with pedestrian safety downtown. I wrote a long letter to the public safety director, mayor chief of staff and business adminstrator requesting a task force to look at the problem holistically with a proactive plan versus reacting location by location. They agreed to add it as a special project on the mayors task force (which includes reps from police) and are kicking it off on Monday.

The current state is, I believe, out of control.

Candice, thank you for your response. We have a systemic issue of pedestrian safety CITY-WIDE, not just downtown, and the majority of it is due to lack of enforcement. That's great that you are working on something for dtjc. But this is a city-wide chronic problem. I urge the entire Council to make this a priority, and that includes getting the Mayor to commit to a real holistic plan. We need a VISION ZERO type a approach.

Hallanan sworn in to replace Ramchal in Ward B

In a vote that has huge political implications for the future of Jersey City, the City Council voted 7 to 1 Thursday to appoint John J. Hallanan III as the councilman for Ward B. Hallanan was nominated by Mayor Steven Fulop.

Hallanan, an attorney whose family has lived in Jersey City for generations, fills the seat vacated by Khemraj ?Chico? Ramchal, who resigned as part of a plea deal to avoid jail time as result of a car accident in March 2015. He will serve until a special election is held for the seat on Nov. 8.

Although all every member of the City Council sang his praises, his appointment became a political issue when councilmen Richard Boggiano and Michael Yun questioned the selection process.

Yun said his ?no? vote was to protest the process used to select Hallanan, not against Hallanan himself.

Both councilmen said they believed Mayor Steven Fulop, who nominated Hallanan, had overstepped his authority and intruded on a process that the state constitution assigns to the council.
This is interesting... "Conflict behind the scenes Informed sources said, however, the appointment was racked with a behind the scenes conflict over two ordinances the council tabled last month that deal with working conditions for private employees servicing office buildings. Some members of the council had reservations about the legality of aspects of the two ordinances, which pertain to employment conditions for private businesses. Behind-the-scenes negotiations ensued, the sources said, in an attempt to trade Hallanan?s appointment for a majority vote to pass those ordinances. Those sources said the negotiations failed, and left some residual bitterness on the council that threaten to cause a leadership change at the reorganization meeting in early July when the council gets to vote on president and other key assignments. I'm no fan of the PA, but this is correct in part:

?It?s irresponsible for a city to allow indiscriminate growth that?s going to tax public infrastructure beyond its capability,? Mr. Degnan said.

JC Mayors and Planning have been way over-building without any planning for infrastructure growth and improvements. This applies to roads, sewers, police, pedestrian access and transit planning, etc. I can't stand what's becoming of this place in terms of the over-crowding without proper infrastructure growth. Its mind-boggling. Having been here now for 21 years, many of us have been screaming this for decades and the Mayors never listen, especially Fulop.

Its funny they are deeming the annual repaving efforts a "Face-Lift" as if this work is more extensive than the annual repaving done yearly.

I'm shocked that Duncan Ave from West Side to 1/9, along side Lincoln Park is not on the list. That's been in terrible shape now for years and is a major Ward B artery.

The only people it "hurts" are those who are middle & lower class who have owned homes for many years/decades (bought at cheaper values, passed down through families) in areas that have boomed, like dtjc, and now will get a much higher tax bill. These are the people who may face issues of not being able to afford to keep their homes. The flip side of that is that they could chose to sell and reap the profit of the higher value (but yes, that is a version of people losing their homes, though they would get money for that, not a total lose at all.)

Not saying these people don't matter, just answering the question.

Does anyone here find it ironic that the loudest voices attacking the VNA have a lot of time to gripe on a message board, yet don't go to the public VNA meetings (or create their own organization in their neighborhood if they oppose them so strongly) to get more info and engage in the discussion?

You have to join the dialogue to make your voice heard. No one is going to pound on every door bearing information. If you don't think the city handled it properly, then talk to your Councilperson. Engage yourself.
