that article reinforces every negative stereotype i have about transplanted new yorkers

"he lives in a 3x5 room and his feet stick out of the room when he sleeps because it's so small. does he care? no - he's in NEW YORK BABY! WOOOOO"

All I know is... with this foreclosure madness... Even if I stick around for 30 years... (so underwater, it would take that long to get back to when I bought)...

I really wonder if Chase would be able to really produce the deed/note to my condo. I don't think they have the note.

So after having done a calculator at www.youwalkaway.com, I am really thinking about walking away. I could stay here free for 1, 2, 3 years... pay off the credit cards... and live for free.

Sure my credit would be tarnished for 7 years, but why stick around for 27 more years and pay through the roof in ever and ever rising property taxes.

Over 30% or more increase since I bought in 2007. And with this reval coming. YIKES.

Why should I stick around when I am so underwater that I will loose money on my condo. Might as well cut and run.

Rent plus utilities should be roughly the same as a mortgage payment in a non-bubble market. If this were the case, it would make sense to buy rather than rent. Rents will always increase over time. Mortgages decrease overtime (slowly at first because it's all interest which is also tax deductible). By the time I'm 65, I'd pay off the mortgage and be left with a few hundred a month for property taxes verses a few thousand...Also, when you own, as long as you cough up the cash every month, nobody can make you move. With a rental, you're at the mercy of the life decisions of your landlord--"You have to move because I'm selling the house" or "My cousin needs a place to live so I'm renting him your place. Sorry." If you own a dog and 2 cats (like I do) and need to suddenly find a new rental--that's a stressful situation. I'm also the type of person who cares deeply about wall colors and decorating and "nesting." I realize not everyone is so invested emotionally in their home.

i thought NJ rent law is usually sympathetic to tenants, not landlords. can they really just kick you out that easily?

agreed that jersey drivers are actually decent. now that i'm living in CT, i would gladly trade the idiots that drive around here for NJ drivers.

the fed and "wall street" - while certainly related - are not usually used interchangeably though. the videos seem to indicate that the fed is stealing(?) money.

also regarding the goldman sachs part of it, they were one of many banks that took and repaid TARP money. in some instances, the firms were solvent enough that they didnt even want to take money in the first place, , but were essentially forced to (JPMorgan). most of these banks have already repaid the money though - with interest.

How come there are very little American festivals, and a very small turnout for National parades ? It seems foreign based events command huge appearances from the foreign born and Americans as well. The 4th of July has the biggest turnout for an American based event. Memorial Day, and Veterens Day should get equal billing compared to all events held. August 6th was the 65th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, an American triumph !

the fireworks on the hudson generally clog up hoboken to the point where they don't let any more cars in. macys thanksgiving day parade has people from all over the country (and the world) show up. im not sure your argument holds water, unless you mean specifically within jersey city.

people go to events that they can have fun at. dancers and good food > a boring military parade

Re: What is the closest beach to Jersey City?
Home away from home
Home away from home

i stopped by asbury park recently and saw it has greatly improved since my last visit a decade or so ago.

another good option is ocean grove. it's the next town over from asbury park, and can be reached in ~1 hr from jersey city. it's got a very small town feel, and there are lots of good restaurants a few blocks from the beach, as well as a great ice cream parlor.

parking isn't usually a huge issue either, and if you park on the side streets it's free.

That doesn't make sense, would Trump pay above market price for something as simple as a bagel or a pencil ?

Maybe not. But he definitely wouldn't pay even 1/4 market price to live in a dump like the JC Heights.

extending that same logic, i doubt he'd pay 1/4 market price to actually live in downtown jersey city. he just hopes a few dopes will see his brand name and move right in.

the sparrow hill neighborhood is west of JFK but it is commonly associated with the heights. in fact, there's a sign put up by the city on manhattan ave (near the white manna) that says welcome to the heights.

i agree tonnelle is pretty far down, but if you dont group it in with the heights, i dont know what other region you could group it with - i guess maybe it's own section (1-9? JC West)

i think short of what the mall has recently done (add more lights to the 1st floor of the parking garage; put up cones to designate a pedestrian walkway area), there's not much else that can be done short of blowing up the parking lot.

side note - i've never seen that parking lot full, even during black friday. there's entire sections that lay perpetually dormant.

Re: Dollar Buses

the dollar buses are great, especially late at night coming back from nyc. they dont run to JC 24/7 (i don't think), but they do run to 32nd street in union city 24/7. it can be a more convenient method of transportation between NY and NJ than the path is.

i grew up a few blocks south of that area. it's relatively quiet and safe, unlike other portions of the heights farther east, which people tend to have mixed feelings about. you shouldn't have any major safety problems walking around there at night. good luck
