Ah, now I get it and now I understand where you are coming from. Thanks for clearing that up.

Of course, I disagree with you. Jersey City can be much more aggressive about recruiting from within the community. We know that we cannot legally require patrolmen to live in the city, but if we aggressively recruit in Jersey City we can certainly up the numbers. And, as is pointed out in the plan, the top administrators CAN BE Jersey City residents.

Lots of members of the community do not trust the police (rightly or wrongly). But, having people FROM the community can only improve things. This is but one example of how things can improve.

I actually do agree that by and large we have a fine police department. But, we have to challenge them to do better. And there is always room for improvement. But, just saying "it can't be done" is not the answer.

But, it is clear now where you are coming from.

Re: Jersey City council denies Filipino Chief Judge post

I agree with other posters who point out that a lack of judges hurts the judicial system. And, quite frankly, my hunch is that Justice Abad would not be ah-bad choice (sorry). I hope the council re-visits this question shortly after the election.

But, we didn't get into this problem of a scarcity of judges overnight, and it is not going to get fixed overnight. A concerted effort will be needed to right this ship.

But putting Ray Velazquez back on the bench is simply revolting to me. Healy likes to hand him any kind of patronage job that comes along. The council rightly rejected Ray "Handout" Velazquez.

But, neither of these issues compares to the grotesque amount of money that was handed out to Oren Dabney of the Incinerator Authority. Taxpayers will be paying for this obscenity long after Healy is gone (and long after the JCIA is abolished). Look for Healy to continue trying to hook up his friends as he heads out the door.

Steve has the guts to put his plans, with specifics, on paper.

The plan creates incentives to have police officers work when and where they are needed most (night time duty and also walking the beat). As opposed to the current system which incentivizes officers to ride in cars during the day (and then try to get off-duty work).

http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... y_2013_election_a_pr.html

Guys, this isn?t even close.

Like many, I was skeptical when Steve Fulop first showed up on the scene. As a long time resident, I found it hard to believe that here now was a politician who was willing to do the right thing. In fact I voted for his opponent (Junior Maldonado) when he first ran for office. We were all surprised when Steve won. I like Junior ? still do, and guess what, even Junior now supports Steve.

Steve has amassed a staggering record of achievement. Take a look for yourself. And, speak with Steve ? he is very approachable. He has proven himself to be a man of character (joining the Marines after 9/11, serving the community in countless ways, and being a responsive and articulate Councilman). His heart is in the right place ? but it is not only that. He knows how to get things done. Of course the Healy team doesn?t like him ? he keeps exposing their soft underbelly (and Healy and his team have a lot of ?splaining? to do). Steve has fought the good fight to improve our schools. Say what you like about our schools, but if you look today you will see that Jersey City now has a world-class schools superintendent and a highly skilled and highly motivated school board. They are working hard to fix the schools and we are seeing a glimmer of hope from their efforts. This would not have happened without Steve (and as unbelievable as it may be, Team Healy objects to Steve Fulop?s efforts to improve our schools). .

I am a Jersey City citizen who has been around a long time and has seen first-hand the crap that goes on in City Hall. I have paid attention and I see the choices before us.

It is clear to me that Steve Fulop will be a mayor that we can be proud of.

We have a 200 year supply of guns, but only a 3 year supply of bullets. The answer seems obvious.

And, this can be finessed: only make 'bad' bullets (like hollow points) harder to obtain, while keeping bullets that are typically used for target practice available to enthusiasts (but perhaps with strict licensing requirements).

Re: Dan is still Dan

Irrespective of their track records, it will be a huge difference if Healy is re-elected versus if Fulop wins.

Candice and Dan have been focusing on different things, and that is fair to compare. But in my judgment Dan won't be able to do a thing if Healy takes the vote.

This is certainly possible, given the Jersey City electorate's dismal record of choosing chief executives to run the city. But there is always hope.

And that hope is that Fulop can overcome the machine politics and the slimy campaign tactics of a a mayor who has virtually no record to run on. His record is one of surrounding himself with crooks, and he very well can't run on that.

I certainly can understand why Dan supporters have hope too. He has been a good guy in the past. And, you are right -- to get elected, you sometimes have to play hardball. But, the distinction between the choices couldn't be clearer and the outcome any more important.

Not true. I am simply saying that lots of people say "I have the flu" when in fact they have something else (common cold, virus, or other maladies that are common in the winter).

Lots of people think they can self diagnose the flu. They cannot.

But, this perception feeds the "hype" cycle. Maybe I am wrong. We will certainly know over the next few weeks/months if this is again a "mild" season.

But, if history is any guide this is likely just another typical season that has once again been over hyped.

Re: Flu vaccines

The flu is definitely "out there." It is out there every year. And, every year it receives over-the-top hype. That is not enough of a reason to get the flu shot.

The CDC is not being straight with people. Using terms like "widespread outbreak" and "epidemic" is akin to the boy who cried wolf.

If a real nasty bug appears on the scene, it will be hard to convince people that "this time we mean it and we are telling you the truth -- this is dangerous."

By the way, the number of lab-confirmed cases of H3N2v (for the season) = zero. This is one of the strains that really is a nasty variant. But, there is no evidence that it is in circulation this season.

Yes, I think basing conclusions on lab-confirmed numbers is useful. Even if we triple or quadruple these numbers, they don't approach significant numbers. CDC likes to claim that high percentages of the population get the flu in any given year, without any real data.

The flu is over-hyped. And, there are numerous, legitimate reasons to decline getting the flu shot, including,

1. Flu shot not entirely effective (estimates at 60%), but you incur risks for adverse reactions (which the CDC/authorities down play) including narcolepsy, febrile seizures, feeling sick, and in some cases (albeit rare) very serious complications.

2. Lack of legal recourse if you are harmed by a shot. If you lose your case in the special "flu court" (yes, this exists) you cannot press a civil case.

3. Suspect, made-up death numbers. CDC hypes "thousands" of deaths, but these are not believable numbers (and even they concede that the vast majority occur amongst the elderly, but cannot distinguish flu vs. pneumonia).

4. The odds of dying from the flu are miniscule.

5. I'm suspicious because healthcare professionals are suspicious. They don't like getting the flu shot, Many only get it because they are threatened with termination.

There are plenty of other reasons to be suspicious of the government being so heavy-handed in trying to vaccinate everyone (and also pushing flu treatments such as Tamiflu, which has its own set of issues, such as Roche withholding 60% + of clinical trial results, including the largest trials: see recent Forbes article on this topic).

Getting the flu shot might be appropriate for you. Just look before you leap.

Re: Flu vaccines
Home away from home
Home away from home

Flu shots are unnecessary for the average healthy person under the age of 65. If you have a pre-existing health condition, then by all means get the shot. But, for everyone else, the flu, while unpleasant, rarely requires hospitalization.

But, by the numbers, your chances of getting the "real" flu are very low. According to the CDC, the actual number of laboratory confirmed cases has dropped for the last two weeks.

CDC Confirmed cases (source: FluView).

week # of confirmed cases
2012 51 5,417
2012 52 5,108
2013 1 4,222

The scary stories you hear in the news are numbers related to flu-like symptoms, not real flu.

So, for the most recent reporting period, ending Jan 5, 2o13 (week 1 of the new year), only 4,222 cases of lab-confirmed flu was reported. Out of US population of 310 million, you are very unlikely to even know someone who has the real flu. In the winter, people are exposed to all sorts of viruses and bacteria and the common cold. These are not the flu.

The other number that is reported is flu deaths. But, these numbers are only statistical approximations, since no authority in the US actually tracks flu deaths (with the exception of pediatric deaths). The vast majority of flu related deaths occur amongst the elderly. But, pneumonia deaths are lumped together with flu, blurring any meaningful numbers.

It is my opinion that NY State's Health Emergency is completely bogus. They are acting on "flu like symptom" numbers, not actual flu. I think this is Gov. Cuomo over-reacting.

Also, the US is one of only a few countries that advocates blanket coverage of the population. Most countries in Europe and elsewhere only advise that the elderly get flu shots (again, assuming no pre-existing conditions.

Another interesting factoid, is that up until a couple of years ago, the vast majority of health professionals did NOT get the flu shot. By some estimates, this has risen to about 60% now, but only because they are threatened with loss of job for not complying.

More than three years ago, Khalil pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Jose L. Linares in Newark federal court. Khalil was one of several local politicians arrested after FBI corruption sting Operation Bid Rig III and admitted he conspired to commit extortion under color of official right.

Absolute nonsense. But nice try at twisting this. Actually, Healy wanted to fold the DPW into the JCIA so that they could preserve all the patronage jobs -- as a favor to Sandra Cunningham.

The fact is that Healy has had plenty of time to enact positive change, but has failed (since this was not his real goal anyway -- keeping the paychecks coming is the goal). So he is now looking to run the clock.

Same thing for the Parking Authority. This is a nice juicy plum for his buddies. He could have moved on this years ago, but didn't, for obvious reasons.

I have no doubt that Dan is still a "good government" advocate at heart. And, when Healy and his slate lose in May, which seems to me the odds-on likely result, I have no doubt that Dan will continue to advocate for better government.

But, we got a strong indicator of how Dan will act in "real world" situations at the last council meeting.

He supported a weaker Healy-backed, (CivicJC-backed) pay-to-play reform plan over a stronger plan. He stated a variety of reasons for this, and some of them were reasonable. But, the final result was to support the weaker Healy plan (which was defeated, btw).

I am glad that Dan is still pushing for good government practices, but he will continue to be stuck in a no-win situation as long as he is aligned with a Healy regime that has poorly served its citizens.

No matter what happens in May, we will all need to work hard to make Jersey City a better place.

I believe teachers should be paid more, and they should get more respect.

I believe the union is, overall, useful for helping raise pay and working conditions for teachers.

But... what we need to see more of is a collaborative relationship between the union, the board of ed, and the school administration. Perhaps this is happening quietly behind the scenes (which would be fine, as long as it is happening).

What we do not need any more of is a confrontational relationship.

And, teachers need to be held accountable for who they elect to union leadership positions. It is really simple -- I will defend the union for fighting for teachers pay and status. But, I will not defend them for obstructing progress in improving our schools.

In this specific case, it sounds like both sides (the administration and the union) seem to acknowledge that they could have done a better job at collaborating.

Let's see if they can work out their differences for the benefit of our children.

North Bergen director of public works indicted for allegedly ordering employees to work for political campaigns and install his windows while on town time

Read more: Hudson Reporter - North Bergen director of public works indicted for allegedly ordering employees to work for political campaigns and install his windows while on town time

NORTH BERGEN -- Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa announced on Monday that Deputy Director of Public Works Timothy Grossi was indicted by a state grand jury for allegedly ordering employees to work on political campaigns and to perform his household chores along with chores at other homes while they were being paid by the township.

Is fourth person indicted in alleged scheme

Grossi, 72, of Jersey City, is the fourth man to be charged in an ongoing investigation by the Division of Criminal Justice into alleged abuses involving employees of the North Bergen Department of Public Works (DPW) being paid by the township for work unrelated to DPW functions.

On Sept. 11, DPW Superintendent James Wiley pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit official misconduct, admitting he directed DPW employees to perform hundreds of hours of chores at his home and to work on campaigns while being paid by the township.

On Sept. 21, two DPW supervisors were indicted for allegedly directing employees to do personal chores for Wiley and work on campaigns.

As Deputy Director of the Department of Public Works, Grossi was Wiley?s boss. It is alleged that Grossi ordered Wiley to send DPW employees to engage in campaign work on behalf of candidates.

?Four defendants have now been charged in our ongoing corruption investigation, reflecting our steady pursuit of evidence and justice in this troubling case,? said Stephen Taylor, Director of the Division of Criminal Justice. ?We urge any residents or workers with additional information about abuses to contact us confidentially. We are diligently investigating all leads."

Installing windows, photographing campaign signs

Among other things, the indictment says that Grossi directly ordered or had another person order one or more DPW employees to install windows and window air conditioning units at his home, perform gardening work or other personal tasks at the homes of others, pick up or deliver political literature, and take photographs of political signs.

Grossi is charged with one count of official misconduct for allegedly directing subordinate employees to work on campaigns on three occasions, while being paid by the township: (1) Nov. 4, 2008, in connection with a mayoral campaign in Bayonne; (2) May 12, 2009, in connection with a mayoral campaign in Jersey City; and (3) Nov. 2, 2010, in Jersey City, in connection with a campaign for sheriff.

Grossi is charged with the counts of theft and misapplication of government property for his alleged role in the unlawful use of employee services, vehicles, tools and equipment for the election campaigns and personal tasks. In two counts related to tampering with or falsifying records, Grossi is charged in connection with his alleged involvement in the submission of fraudulent timesheets related to his own hours and the hours of subordinate employees, which allegedly covered up the unlawful work done on campaigns and on personal tasks.

?We allege that Grossi, who was one of the top officials in the Department of Public Works, ordered that employees be unlawfully used for personal and political purposes, all at the taxpayers? expense,? said Attorney General Chiesa. ?Local taxpayers should never be asked to foot the bill for this type of corruption, and we are working hard to eliminate it, in North Bergen and throughout New Jersey.?

$133K salary

Grossi currently receives an annual salary of approximately $133,000 from the township.

The indictment is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The indictment was handed up to Superior Court Judge Mary C. Jacobson in Mercer County, who assigned it to Bergen County, where Grossi will be ordered to appear for arraignment at a later date.

North Bergen will hold a town commissioners' meeting this Wednesday, where the public is likely to comment on this matter. Watch this weekend's paper for more coverage of the issue.

Also, it would be interesting to learn about the plans to re-organize and perhaps how it may have learned from past mistakes. Also, although I have consistently heard that the museum was welcoming to the community, at least some people never felt that way.

Re: Astor Place Jersey City
Home away from home
Home away from home

Try to spend some significant time in the area. And, also, try doing some every day tasks like walking to a nearby store, dry cleaners, etc.

I can certainly understand the appeal. There is some lovely housing stock in the area.

If your family's safety is your number one concern, spending time in the area will help you figure out whether you can deal with the shadier aspects. Also, I consider the proximity of the nearby high school a downer.

I was seriously looking at a house in the neighborhood, but one Saturday afternoon I went by and there was music blasting from the next door neighbor (this directly contradicts another person's post, but this was my reality). So, rather than worry about it, I passed on the house.

Also, as pointed out, public trans from there is not particularly easy and the buses leave something to be desired. For me an important factor is easy proximity to PATH.

Finding a reasonable neighborhood with good prices is quite a trick in Jersey City, but I thik it can be done.

Good luck with your search.

So how much Federal bribe money made it's way into Healy's campaign and how much has he returned or given away? Does anybody know?

I actually don't think that much of that greenback made it past the bribe recipients. It appears the cronies were too greedy to share the loot (except Leona Beldini - and look where that got her).

Jack Shaw had filed for bankruptcy (before comitting suicide), so he was not sharing any of the spoils. Maybe Guy Catrillo gave back some of it? (By the way, his prison stint is almost up so he'll be home for Christmas!).

Here are the potential 'donors'

?Leona Beldini, 74, of Jersey City
? Joseph Cardwell, 68, of Jersey City, NJ,
? Joseph Castagna, 53, of Jersey City, NJ,
? Guy Catrillo, 54, of Jersey City, NJ
? Edward Cheatam, 61, of Jersey City, NJ
? Maher A. Khalil, 39, of Jersey City, NJ,
? Lori Serrano, 37, of Jersey City, NJ,
? Jack Shaw, 61, of Jersey City, NJ,
? Mariano Vega, 59, of Jersey City, NJ.

Do you think Mariano shared his haul? Nah, I doubt it. Only the Treasurer (Beldini) made sure the dough got divided.

Oren Dabney / JCIA spend tax dollars with almost no oversight
Home away from home
Home away from home

Thanks Mayor Healy~!

JCIA boss Oren Dabney gets $ 140,000 salary, gets lifetime pension and health benefits and will get paid even if his position is eliminated (which is likely to happen).

So, Healy's pal Oren Dabney is set for life, even if Healy loses the election.

My9 News, 10 O'Clock tells the story here:

Oren Dabney / JCIA spending tax dollars with almost no oversight, but get the good perks.

Dabney ran up a $ 7,000,000 debt which taxpayers will have to pay, but no one held him accountable.

Once again, the Jersey City taxpayers are played for suckers.

Dear Editor:
Property taxes are too high and getting higher, the level of crime is unacceptable, and our city is run like it is 1911 and not 2011.

Corruption, double dipping, patronage and cronyism are interfering with the city?s ability to thrive and move forward. Fleeing residents has led to the dismal 3 percent population growth reflected in the decennial 2010 Census despite a development boom of historic proportions.

I am running for Jersey City Council At-Large in the November 8 special election with a simple mission: to improve the decisions made by our city....

Hard to reconcile that abrupt of an about face in just twelve months time, no?

I especially like the foreshadowing of the "abrupt about face."

It is really quite simple: you get the government you deserve.

If you think Healy/Levin is the best that Jersey City has to offer, by all means vote for them.
