Perhaps he wasn?t lying at all. Have you considered the possibility that that for certain aspects of his world view, he simply isn?t capable of making a significant distinction between objective and subjective reality? If he didn?t genuinely believe he is correct and justified in making all kinds of ridiculous statements, the embarrassment of being so profoundly off could be too much to bear. I don?t think he was lying per se, but what may be going on in his mind could be far more complex and potentially dangerous than simple dishonesty.

Mr. Trump?s claim is absurd, but there?s little denying he was successful at sending thousands of people on a distracting and time consuming snipe hunt that serves his purposes either way. Perhaps our best recourse is to stop patronizing his irrational game, because he?s not being ?debunked? as much as he?s being given the publicity that his narcissistic behavior is intended to generate.

Even so, the duration of a few months should be enough time for the council to actually make it illegal to park the for profit bikes at public racks.

Isn?t one of the relative benefits of the Nextbike system used by Hudson Bike Share that the bikes can be locked to any rack using their integral cable locks during the rental period? That seems as reasonable as the freedom to park a rental car in a public space.

If HBS is stationing un-hired bikes at public racks, that?s different, but in order to make the distinction, law enforcement would have to pay close attention and create an ongoing public expense in the process. Or... we could just spring for more public bike racks.

No.

Consider instead, the popular kneejerk reaction of running to the internet to highlight an obviously offensive statement and demonize the individual may simply not be the wisest approach to addressing problems that exist within them, and more importantly, in our society. Maybe we should put more energy into focusing on the disease-- the "why"--instead of the symptoms--the "what." Unfortunately, that's not how social media tends to work. It's a powerful tool, but it can also ruin the lives of people who may not deserve it.

Instead of calling him names, I prefer to say that Mr. Trump appears to have several traits that I understand are often associated with narcissistic personality disorder. Such behavior can apparently be a great asset in business and profiteering, but in government it?s not found among world leaders who champion a democratic and free way of life. Instead, it?s been found among very different leaders who are remembered in the poorest of light. Calling him names misses the point that he may simply be unfit for service because of the incompatible and potentially dangerous psychological traits he might bring with him into the executive office.

I don?t care what he claims to have seen in Jersey City. The more relevant point is that almost everything he says should serve as a public warning about his nature. Never mind the content, the context alone is disturbing.

Fair enough. An invasive species is an invasive species, genetically modified or otherwise.

The benefits of any potentially invasive species should be studied and weighed against the risks that come with the disruption of a natural habitat. However, perhaps we should first take a much harder look at the impact our insistence of having access to everything, everywhere, all the time, has on the species we consume and if our behavior and use of other technologies isn?t responsible for most of the problem in the first place. I dunno, maybe we should eat less salmon.

Perhaps you should be more curious about your own motivations, Jman8.

Many of your posts about Chick-fil-A indeed focus on your opinion that they sell a very high quality product. I?m not singling out an isolated statement. You?re welcome to believe factory farmed chicken that is selectively bred for accelerated growth and unnatural size is the foundation for quality poultry, but that?s just an opinion. Yes, it?s true that Chick-fil-A is a popular restaurant chain, but not because they sell a great quality product?because people, including myself, simply like the way it tastes. It?s still junk food that relies on modern food science to compensate for its questionable provenance.

Jcman8, you didn't say that Chick-fil-A was healthy or unhealthy, nor was healthfulness the focus of what I wrote. It's just a concept you latched on to, like "organic," perhaps so you could avoid standing by your own remark about "extraordinary quality" that hardly represents the reality of their products.

The reason this came up is a poster used the fact that Chik Fil A does not claim to sell "organic" meat as a basis to attack them. I pointed out how silly this was.

There was no attack by said poster, and his argument against their product wasn't based solely on whether they use organically produced meat.

A Chick-fil-A sandwich is certainly tasty, but in order to produce so many of them every day, factory farming becomes a necessity, and factory farmed poultry is nothing special in terms of flavor and texture, never mind the multitude of ills that go with the practice. It sure isn?t nonna?s chicken cutlet in those foil-lined bags.

Perhaps you also discount the reality that the fast-food industry, which includes Chick-fil-A just like it includes McDonald?s, has driven food science into a highly advanced field that allows mediocre products to taste better than they otherwise could.

Nobody is telling you to stop enjoying Chick-fil-A, but it?s unhealthy junk food by almost any standard and nothing special compared to good cooking with quality meats. There?s no need to defend the company or argue about the unfortunate use of ?organic? as a misleading advertising term. Enjoy your vices all you want, but don?t bother trying to rationalize them into goodness. Vices aren?t supposed to be good.

Re: Take your ID to the polls

One of the most overlooked steps in problem solving is first identifying whether something is actually a problem.

Whether voter fraud exists is a much less relevant question than whether voter fraud influences the democratic process in a meaningful, counterproductive way. We then have to ask if an ID requirement would influence the process in a more meaningful, counterproductive way. Our election laws seem to imply ?no? to the first question, and ?yes? to the second.

Never mind that identity theft?an enormous problem that certainly does exist?probably wouldn?t be such a leap for a person intent on committing voter fraud.

Brewster, if you?re convinced LEDs are inferior for horticulture, I wouldn?t be so quick to call people overly sensitive if they find the color temperature and spectral distribution of some LED lights extremely unpleasant and perhaps even unhealthy. We don?t make use of photosynthesis, but we do have physiological and psychological responses to all kinds of stimuli, including the quantity and quality of light we receive. We are predisposed to having some of those reactions in great part because of evolution, so there?s only so much ?getting used to it? that we can do.

LED lighting technology has improved greatly over the past several years, but fixtures that produce high quality light tend to be very expensive. For outdoor lighting, we usually want fixtures that produce the most amount of light for the lowest installed and operating costs. Unfortunately, cheaper, brighter, and more efficient LED lights tend to produce very cold light with poor color rendering ability, which tend to look and feel very unnatural when they?re the only source of light.

Brewster: You seem to be asking me to explain something I didn?t write or imply. In fact, I don?t have an opinion about the lawsuit because I don?t know enough about the details of the suit, the conduct of the deceased or the bar staff, or the plaintiffs? motive. Indeed. Think about what happened.

Think about it from the perspective of a disoriented young man experiencing the terror of drowning. Think about it from the perspective of his family and friends who loved him. Think about it from any perspective where what actually happened, and how people feel about what actually happened, is all that matters.

Remember the thread you started after the Tianjin port disaster? The only concern you expressed was over Chinese government censorship of the media?old, old news?not the scores of firefighters and other emergency workers who would have certainly perished in the second explosion.

You want to talk about personal responsibility? Try to handle the subjects of pain, death, and loss as a mature, responsible adult.

If it was documented per city standards and ordinances?as any project must to receive permitting?the contractor?s price to PSE&G to perform the repaving work would have been reflected in their fee. PSE&G certainly deserves the most blame, but they don't appear to be the only party at fault.
