Re: Durable Flooring

Home away from home

I have a friend who bought a craftsman style house about 15 years ago. he put down laminate and now they look cheap. he keeps talking about painting in order to make the place look nicer. I told him that no amount of painting is going to overcome the problem of his floors. I told him to look into porcelain that looks like wood, or even engineered wood floors.

any recommendations for something that will look good after 50 years? he says the wood floors are in such poor shape that they can't be sanded. I doubt this since I got my hardwood floors to great even after being covered in vinyl

I haven't seen where laminate buckles, but after awhile they start to swell at the ends and end up looking cheap. that has been my experience.

if the homeowner can no longer afford his/her home which is a sad situation, then the homeowner/s should sell and rent. or aybe buy someplace more affordable.

Actually, hero69, most legal and illegal live in tax abated buildings. I was asked to register voters for CIO which is the fore runner of Jersey City Together. I went to the new buildings (affordable housing) assigned in the downtown area. The nonvoters were noncitizens from different racial groups. Nonprofit groups usually churches get money from the federal government to settle legal immigrants. The Catholic Church received around $90 million last year which is why they are pro immigration. But they are not the only nonprofit group, other religious groups also receive funding but I am not aware of the amount. So no hero69, they are not paying the school taxes.
oh my, I stand "corrected". so, even tax-abated buildings pay taxes. 2nd, are you suggesting that only illegal aliens live in these "tax-abated" buildings? do all illegals live in these buildings? do any legal immigrants live there? what % of residents of these buildings are native born citizens? %? please enlighten me.

3. If you don?t think there is a ton of waste and corruption in HC schools I suggest you?d be wrong. It?s always easy to spend others money, in this case a half a billion dollars each and every year. Newark sucks almost twice as much-with similar educational outcomes. Uninvolved parents are the root-Union City schools are diverse too, but parents there support education with great results.
what bs. don't most immigrants (legal and illegal) live in houses or apartments and pay rent or property taxes. this rent is then used to cover the anlords property taxes which funds hc schools

I think the payroll tax is a good first step, but why not have a municipal gas tax and maybe a municipal tax on marijuana if it is ever legalized

Give NJ some more time. We'll end up tops. And Amazon knows it.
i'd rather pay more taxes to live in NY/NJ area than no/low taxes to live in places like missippi or alabama or anywhere between the northeast and California.

Jersey City payroll tax clears hurdle amid objections

JERSEY CITY — Dozens of union workers crowded inside the City Council chambers on Wednesday to show their opposition to a proposed payroll tax, with business owners telling the council to put the brakes on a tax plan they say will devastate the business community.

Parents, meanwhile, urged council members to support the tax, saying the expected revenue is needed to stave off major budget cuts at the public school district. A form of state aid that brought the district about $170 million this year is being taken away in chunks starting in July.

https://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... _hurdle_amid_objecti.html

have I seen this play book before? Whenever wants or dislikes something, they get a bunch of union people to protest. This is BS. As JC becomes more prosperous, JC should shoulder more if it's JCBOE costs...Maybe municipalities should be allowed to have an income tax too.

PATH introducing cellphone service to underground stations

Updated 6:45 PM; Posted 6:45 PM

The Jersey Journal

Underground PATH stations are officially joining the 21st century.

The Port Authority announced Tuesday that cellphone service is being added to nine underground PATH stations, with connectivity from major carriers phased in over the course of the rest of the year and into early 2019.

As of Tuesday, AT&T and T-Mobile cellular service is available at underground PATH stations in New York, while cell service from both providers will expand to New Jersey's PATH stations in the next three weeks. Verizon Wireless and Sprint customers will see system-wide cellular service in both New York and New Jersey's underground PATH stations early next year.

Cellular connectivity will be available on platforms and throughout underground stations.

"We want to upgrade service to the traveling public at all our facilities," Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton said in a statement. "Access to cell coverage is an important expectation of PATH customers."

PATH follows in the footsteps of New York City's Metropolitan Transit Authority, which finished adding cellphone service to all of its subway stations in January 2017.

The PATH stations in New York with the new cellular coverage are: 33rd, 23rd, 14th, Ninth, and Christopher streets. The World Trade Center PATH station has had cellular coverage since it opened in 2016.

Is there a resource center in jersey city for people looking for household items and other useful stuff, like lightly used linen. I am trying to go minimalist and want to get rid of stuff but not throw it away. Some stuff is still unopened.

How much does one save by putting plastic over the windows?

The last round of cars worked out to, what, about $1.5M per car?
That was a decade ago. Since then, inflation, tariffs on many of the materials, and all of the gadgetry that make the cars operable with trackside PTC equipment have contributed to an increase in cost. Does all of that justify $1.3M increase in cost per car? Don't know.
Looked a bit into it and NYC MTA bought 1,700 cars at about $1.3 million each. PATH isn't going to get the same economies of scale.

The price of steel has gone up 263% since a decade ago. Subway cars weigh about 80,000 lbs, assuming that most of that weight is steel, the change in steel prices alone could be the main thing causing that price increase.
The Port Authority/PATH should be coordinating its purchases with the NYC MTA in order to get better pricing.
