Folks in NJ & NY have a right to be concerned about Spectra Energy's proposed pipeline because Spectra Energy has a track record that looks like a police rap sheet:

➣ Top Civil Penalty Ranking ? Spectra Energy?s Texas Eastern pipeline division is #7 on the EPA?s list of the ?Top Civil Penalty Cases of All Time? ? the National Enforcement Trends (NETs) document which is on the EPA website. The $15 million penalty was for massive PCB contamination along the company?s 9,000-mile pipeline from Texas to New Jersey.

➣ Fiery Inferno ? Spectra Energy?s underground gas storage reservoir outside of Houston (Moss Bluff) suffered catastrophic failure in 2004 with two explosions, 6 days of fire with flames as high as 1,000 feet and two evacuations. The company does not want to talk about it. The project manager at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission told me they were not aware of this when they approved Spectra Energy?s proposal for the storage reservoir in Bedford County, PA.

➣ PCB Contamination ? Spectra Energy acknowledges in its Form 10-K (filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Feb. 27, 2009) that, "some of our pipeline systems are contaminated with [toxic] PCBs." The EPA has concluded that PCBs cause cancer in animals and are a probable human carcinogen.

➣ ?Unlawful Conduct? ? The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has issued two Notices of Violation during the past year for the company?s ?unlawful conduct? related to its 12 billion cubic feet underground natural gas storage reservoir in Bedford County, PA.

But property owners can fight back. Our two-year battle against Houston-based Spectra Energy which seized our property rights for an underground gas storage field led to the development of a website which attracts visitors from inside and outside the country. If you want to learn from our experience and understand Spectra Energy's track record via public documents, refer to this post: Spectra Energy

In particular, check out the "Links & Resources" at the bottom of the post to learn more about how Spectra Energy operates.

here are a few more highlights from their Annual Report: We do not insure against all potential losses and could be seriously harmed by unexpected liabilities. We are not fully insured against all risks inherent to our business. We are not insured against all environmental accidents that might occur. If a significant accident or event occurs that is not fully insured, it could adversely affect our operations and financial condition. In addition, we may not be able to maintain or obtain insurance of the type and amount we desire at reasonable rates... Terrorist attacks, and the threat of terrorist attacks, have resulted in increased costs to our business. Continued global hostilities or other sustained military campaigns may adversely affect our results of operations. Acts of terrorism and any possible reprisals as a consequence of any action by the United States and its allies could be directed against companies operating in the United States. This risk is particularly great for companies, like ours, operating in any energy infrastructure industry that handles volatile gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons. The potential for terrorism has subjected our operations to increased risks that could have a material adverse effect on our business. In particular, we may experience increased capital and operating costs to implement increased security for our facilities and pipelines, such as additional physical facility and pipeline security, and additional security personnel. Moreover, any physical damage to high profile facilities resulting from acts of terrorism may not be covered, or covered fully, by insurance. We may be required to expend material amounts of capital to repair any facilities, the expenditure of which could adversely affect our cash flows and business. ...so what they're saying is that is shit hits the fan, don't count on them to fix it.

Interesting tidbit about one of their Members of the Board, Nora M. Brownell

"Nora M. Brownell was elected to the Board of Directors of Spectra Energy Partners GP, LLC in May 2007 and will serve on our Audit Committee and the Conflicts Committee. In May 2001, Ms. Brownell was confirmed as Commissioner of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission where she served until the expiration of her term in June 2006. During her time as Commissioner, Ms. Brownell was an advocate for the development of regional transmission organizations, markets for wholesale power and national energy infrastructure development."

I wonder how far in bed Spectra is with the FERC.

(And how may current FERC employees are lining themselves up for a job at Spectra.)

It's the same f*acking companies. They cant be trusted.

And just because the gas was extracted elsewhere and poisoned some other person's well doesn't make it ok to facilitate the transportation of a dirty and dangerous gas to its users.

We should be against Natural Gas, period.

They're evil f*acks!

The hardest part of a terrorist attack would be getting enough explosive to a location to cause damage.

Spectra will assist would-be terrorists by placing a 42-inch wide, 5-mile long bomb through the middle of Jersey City.

All it will take is one dumb terrorist to set it off.

----

or one wayward truck, one manufacturing defect, one cut corner, one lightning strike

and BOOM, bye, bye Jersey City.

----

We face enough dangers in this city. We don't need to build more.

You should know that when this happens, you are not liable for any of the fraudulent withdraws or charges. Just let the bank know about it and they should refund your money and fix it.

It's the banking industry's fault that this happens. The security system is old and and outdated. The vulnerabilities are known, but it is easier for them to react rather than prevent.

Does Jersey City own the land on which they want to build the pipeline?

Could Jersey City build a park in the path of the pipeline or designate it a historical or natural area that cannot be used for such purposes?

1: Who will make the decision or authorization to place the pipeline here in Jersey City?

2: Will the pipeline have any off-gassing or emissions of any sort?

3: What kind of auxiliary infrastructure will the pipeline have? Will there be compression facilities, noisy, polluting machinery, etc?

I've had nothing but good experiences at The Embankment. They're definitely one of the best restaurants Jersey City has to offer, with a sharp, attractive yet friendly decor, consistently excellent and innovative food, and a friendly and competent staff. Their only bad thing is the location, way on the far side of Hamilton Park. If they had Hard Grove's spot, they'd be killin it.

I also give them props for continuous efforts to expand their business with special events, wine tastings, performances and the like. I think they've got what it takes to make it for the long haul in Jersey City.

there are at least four cameras on that block. 2 on the school and 2 on the Roosevelt. Hopefully one of those was able to record the incident and hopefully the police took the time to investigate.

I drive up 10th coming back from the Holland tunnel and often seen families walking their dogs and playing with their kids on that block.

Unfortunately, it happens to be very close to the projects and homeless shelters on the other side of the tunnel, and the tunnel brings in a criminal element as well.

No, it's like saying he was the only car parked in the middle of the turnpike during rush-hour.

The Hudson river is the busiest waterway around. I don't know where he was anchored, but when you have so much traffic speeding by, it'd would behoove you to stop in designated anchor spots only.

This is a pretty half-assed way to try and solve a traffic problem. Suddenly change a blinking yellow to blinking red, add a stop sign and call it a day?

We need major changes to the routing, design, and policing of our roadways to improve the safety for all users.

It's nuts out there. Our police and city planners need to step it up.

That's pretty cool. I've been by that a thousand times but never noticed it before.

Here's an article about it from right before it closed:
http://www.nytimes.com/1989/03/26/nyr ... -of-4-investigations.html

Crowded Jail in New Jersey Is Focus of 4 Investigations
By GEORGE JAMES, Special to the New York Times
Published: March 26, 1989

JERSEY CITY? The Hudson County Board of Freeholders is investigating the Hudson County Jail, one of the most overcrowded county jails in New Jersey and long a place where troubles range from the pathetic to the tragic.

The freeholders' inquiry is examining a broad range of conditions in the jail, from reports of inmates sleeping on floors to a beating death of a prisoner. That death is being investigated by the F.B.I., the county prosecutor and the United States Attorney's Office in Newark.

A deputy warden and two guards have been arrested and charged with murder in the inmate's death amid wider allegations that a ''goon squad'' of corrections officers has made unprovoked attacks on inmates.

The county prosecutor, Paul M. DePascale, said the inmate, Arnaldo Ortega, 27 years old, in jail on a burglary charge, was beaten in an elevator for up to 20 minutes late March 8 and early March 9 after he asked for a painkiller for a chronic headache. Two Other Deaths

Then he languished in a holding pen for 16 hours before being taken to a hospital, the prosecutor said.

Two other deaths have occurred at the jail within the last 14 months. One was declared a suicide and the other was attributed to natural causes. In 1981, seven inmates burned to death when a cellblock mattress caught fire.

Allegations of racism and violence at the jail have already increased tensions there, prompting county investigations. But Mr. Ortega's death in a hospital on March 11 of extensive ''blunt force injuries'' to the head and body has drawn renewed attention to overcrowding in the Hudson County Jail as well as in jails and prisons throughout the State.

Assignment Judge Burrell Ives Humphreys of State Superior Court, in a March 17 hearing on conditions at the jail, said he believed overcrowding contributed to Mr. Ortega's death. Sleeping on the Floor

Some inmates in recent months have had to sleep on the floor without mattresses, one for two months, prisoner advocates told the judge at the hearing. County officials denied this. As of Feb. 28, the state correctional system was at 115 percent capacity with 16,475 inmates, said James Stabile, a spokesman for the State Department of Corrections.

An additional 2,190 state-sentenced prisoners were being housed in county jails at that time to relieve overcrowding in state prisons. About 28 were in the Hudson County jail, he said.

As of March 14, jails in 21 counties were at 162 percent of capacity with 13,272 inmates, according to the State Administrative Office of the Courts. Deprived of Their Rights

In May 1982, a Superior Court judge said conditions at the 63-year-old Hudson County jail were deplorable and ruled that inmates were being deprived of their constitutional rights because of overcrowding. At the time, the average daily population was over 500 inmates. As of March 14, the number was 869. With a rated capacity of 302 inmates, the eight-story Hudson jail was at 288 percent of capacity as of that date. Among large county jails, only Passaic County's was higher at 332 percent with 1,511 inmates.

The population explosion in state and county correction units has been caused, in part, in the last several years by a state crackdown on drugs and stiffer sentencing laws.

Both Warden Lawrence A. Butler, who assumed his post last September, and Craig K. Donnelly, president of the local Policemen's Benevolent Association, which represents corrections officers said there was no evidence a ''goon squad'' existed at the jail.

But former inmates have told stories of many attacks.

One of them, Henry Rivera, 23, who, according to jail records, served a week in the jail in June on a charge arising from a domestic dispute, said he had seen at least three attacks on inmates by guards, usually arising from requests for medication.

The lawyer for the Ortega family, Patrick G. Patel, said he had taken dozens of calls from inmates and guards who said a ''goon squad'' did exist. Morale Is Low

Warden Butler and Mr. Donnelly said most corrections officers, whose salaries range from $16,080 to $26,2l9, perform their duties honorably.

Morale is low following the arrest of Deputy Warden Raymond Murray, and Officers Thomas Murphy and David Dumers. The men have been held in the Bayonne Municipal Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. Of 181 corrections officers, 40 percent are black, 40 percent white, and 20 percent Hispanic, a county official said.

At least 20 more officers are needed to staff the jail, county officials say, and officers have had to work mandatory double shifts, another factor that has increased tensions at the jail.

Crescent court is pretty far from the PATH and there's nothing beyond it, except the train tracks and turnpike, so you will have very little foot traffic around there. I feel a little on edge even in the day, since it's so deserted.

On the way, you'll pass the bums hanging out around Bay/Newark, the drug dealers and bums around Goody at Coles st, Jordan's lounge, which can get rowdy at night, and the Latin Lounge, which you can find plenty of complaints about on here.

that traffic study claiming the light rail will discourage drivers is bs. 30 seconds at the light rail doesn't compare to 20 minutes on the ramp down to the tunnel on the turnpike. It's going to become the #1 route for avoiding the holland tunnel traffic with people getting off at the lsp exit, cutting through the park, up jersey and through the side streets of hamilton park.

lovely.
