Anyone in Harsimus Cove? We evacuated from our garden level condo to my in-laws in the 'burbs. Any reports much appreciated!

DO NOT eat at Churrasquiera Europa. That place is disgusting. They have a lunch buffet and there wasn't a thing on it that was appealing. I had a bowl of watered down cabbage soup that was clearly made up of days-old leftovers. Nasty... take the effort to walk a little further afield.

Thanks for the info Heights. I'll report it. I kind of got wrapped up in the claims process with my insurance company and since they didn't need a police report, I forgot about it. The irony of being a law breaker for not reporting being a victim of crime... ;)

Our car was parked there overnight a few weekends ago and experienced a hit and run... the amount of body damage totaled the car. I didn't file a police report since I didn't think there was a point. Maybe I should just so they have it for their stats?

Our car was also rummaged through Monday night when parked on Erie and Third Street overnight. But it was our fault as we had left the door unlocked! Oops. Luckily, we don't keep anything in the car and the only thing they got was a bunch of quarters that were in the glove compartment.

Best advice is to leave nothing in the car. Crackheads will smash your window for an empty soda can worth 5 cents if it gets them closer to getting high.

Maybe, just maybe, they'll also fix the street in front of this building. The potholes here and on the stretch of Grove approaching the building are among the worst in the city (now that Columbus has been repaved).

Re: Outrageously Noisy Neighbors on Third Street

Now that is interesting info because it is as you described... lots of different faces coming and going all the time, partying all hours, smoking lots of substances, throwing beer cans around. And I've wondered what kind of jobs they work since someone seems to always be home blasting some techno music. Of course if they are somewhat transient they have no interest in being good neighbors. Sigh.

So what is the deal with Moishe's employees? I think I must have missed something. They are known party animals?

MikeyTBC: Sure, they weren't completely nude but they were lounging around in tighty whiteys on my roof... my neighbors and I found it indecent.

Well, Vigilante, since you "went there," yes, these guys are all Israeli. I do think a cultural difference contributes to the noise issue (and also the nude sunbathing issue? Who sunbathes nowadays?!).

Re: Cleaning Service

Home away from home

I just used Spotless Planet on Monday as they were recommended in this (albeit old) thread. They were phenomenal! The place has never been so clean and they did it so quickly it was incredible (faster than when I had Regina's clean). Very reasonably priced too at $55/hour for two cleaners.

One note is that they are supposed to use all natural cleaners which I wanted because I don't like ammonia around my cats. They did use Simple Green and Murphy's Oil Soap. But I think they also used Windex on the windows (yes, they did the windows too!). But I didn't actually confirm it. I'll definitely use them again and ask them at that point.

Believe me... I've tried talking to them and haven't had success that way. I would always prefer to go the civil route to involving the authorities. But these guys won't listen... the best was when I found them sunbathing on my roof (in their underwear by the by) and asked them to please not hang out on my roof for reasons of damage and liability. They claimed that it was their roof! They clogged up my gutters with beer cans and barricaded the emergency exit while they were up there too. Talked to their landlord (who lives in Israel) after a few of their sunbathing sessions and I don't think they've been up there since.

Outrageously Noisy Neighbors on Third Street
Home away from home
Home away from home

Anyone else annoyed by these guys who blast their music (mostly techno but also bad 80s) all hours of the day and night? They also talk at the top of their voices outside constantly. They live on all three floors of a row house and have a constant stream of party-goers... it's like living next to a frat house.

My neighbor and I have both called the police on them when they refused to turn down their music. The other night, I had friends over to have some drinks in my garden and they were having a dance party with their speakers outside turned up to 11. We couldn't even talk *inside*. Called the cops three times but they didn't respond.

I know I the people in my building cannot be the only ones annoyed at these guys. I hope other people will call the police when they are making so much noise at midnight on a Tuesday. Maybe if enough people complain the cops will do something?

I would also like to reiterate: If you see (or smell) a problem with the sewers on your street, call the JCMUA. They are pretty responsive.

A few summers ago, we had a sewer collapse in front of our building that affected our units and they were on the scene immediately and until the problem was resolved.

I live in the Cove (3rd Street) and it is great because it is so quiet. Great neighbors who are friendly but not nosy. However, the neighbors on my street do keep a keen watch on the goings on so I always feel safe where we are... kind of an unofficial neighborhood watch.

WOW! So, even though I've used PostNet on several occasions with no problems, I'm going to think twice in the future... not because of customer reviews but because of the way the owner has responded to the complaints. If he thinks it's O.K. to talk to customers the way he has responded on JC List, I don't think he's the kind of person I want to do business with.

I am loving the renovation and new management. I'm having a hard time finding a reason to drive to A&P. The produce is great! I hope people will patronize them so they continue to stock the wide variety of products in the store now.

I couldn't agree more with the OP. Basil and his team are EXCELLENT! We had them replace our floors with hardwood and tile and they did a tremendous job. I don't know about showers specifically but the work they did on the tile was very precise. I would totally trust them with a shower job.

Re: should Jersey City create and implement on-street bicycle lanes?
Home away from home

I just want to add my +1 in support of bike lanes. I ride my bike on the sidewalk on some blocks (I know it's illegal) because I'm just too terrified of the traffic. More amenities for bikers will have many positive side effects besides just making biking easier: Higher property values to name just one. But the idea of it being a traffic calming measure (as explained above) is also a great byproduct.

ELECTION DAY SHENANIGANS
Home away from home
Home away from home

I just got this email from Steve Fulop's office about shady electioneering practices happening today:
---------------------------

As you probably know, today is election day and the stakes are as high they can be for schools and taxes.

Sadly, the City Council office and the Board of Elections have received widespread complaints - particularly in Ward E (not a surprise sadly) - that poll workers aren?t letting people vote and sending them elsewhere. I sent an email yesterday referencing this likely outcome and here we are with the situation even more difficult than expected.

Most of you know, in Jersey City that working against the political structure often entails working against election day shenanigans and I would say here we are today? With that in mind I do believe we can adapt and overcome only as long as you are willing to push through and make sure that your vote is cast.

PLEASE GO TO THE POLLING LOCATION, VOTE, AND IF THE POLL WORKER CHALLENGES YOU DEMAND A PROVISIONAL BALLOT AT YOUR LOCATION. THEY WILL BE COUNTED ? THE STAKES ARE HIGH ON MANY FRONTS AND WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

It is important that we send a message that people care, residents will overcome obstacles and election day games don?t work.

THE POLLS ARE OPEN TILL 9PM

PLEASE VOTE 2A, 4A, 5A (Sangeeta, Vidya, and Marilyn)

If your problem at the polling location persist, reply to this email and we will send people to help.

Thank you
Steve

Re: Why do you live in Jersey City?
Home away from home
Home away from home

I love living in JC (since 2003) for these reasons:

The cultural diversity (and resulting diversity of food and shopping)

The sense of community which is fostered by my wonderful neighbors

The progressive attitude that pervades JC (at least Downtown... can't speak about other 'hoods)

The architecture and the history

The active arts community

I would love to be able to afford a bigger condo/house in JC. I could move to the burbs to get a house but for now I'm sacrificing a bigger space because I love living in JC so much!

Re: Why is this city so dark?
Home away from home
Home away from home

There's a fine line... I am personally concerned about light pollution. I don't necessarily want your porch light shining in my eyes while I'm trying to sleep. My neighbors have a motion light that wakes me up at times, even with my blackout shade and curtains drawn.

Some municipalities have installed fixtures that light the street but minimize the amount of light that escapes up toward dwellings and the sky. I would love to see JC install these when they next upgrade fixtures.

Construction noises near 3rd Street during the night
Home away from home
Home away from home

The past few nights I've noticed hammering after 10 p.m. and last night I was awakened by hammering at 4:30 A.M.!!! I think it might be construction that is happening at C-Town on Jersey & Third.

I'm going to go there after work and speak with the manager but I wondered if anyone in the neighborhood had taken any other actions such as calling code enforcement.

Anyone else bothered by this noise?

Cats scratch to leave their scent, to stretch and to express contentment. If they can't scratch something, they might begin to spray (to leave their scent and express their unhappiness).

The problem with most cat trees is they are too short for most adult cats to get a good stretch. We finally found two that are tall enough and put them at the edge of their "territory" and near the couch. It helped immensely. I can't remember the brand of cat tree (I ordered them online) but if you want, I can find the info for you.

Cable TV options in JC

I'm trying to lower my bills and wonder if anyone has found a cheaper alternative to Comcast, such as Direct TV or Dish Network. Right now I have the bundle (TV, phone, internet) and pay over $200 per month. I wouldn't mind unbundling to save some dough. Any ideas or experiences out there?
