I'm glad you are OK. I've had a few close calls too. If you live in the Lafayette area, like me, there is always the route over the pedestrian bridge and into LSP.
I use this to go home as I really hate Pacific Ave, especially where it meets Grand.

This reminds me of something that CABA went through a few years ago. We had a developer offering to fund the planting of trees anywhere along Communipaw Ave. (which is practically treeless on many blocks)
We only got a few planted though because we could not get permission from many owners, and more importantly, we could not CONTACT many owners of the bldgs on the street. Only renters were living there, and when we tried to look up the owner, their addresses/info were out-of-date, or they were falsely listing their address as the property being rented out. If we did manage to mail a letter to them asking for permission to plant the tree, it was almost always completely ignored. Why should they give a rats ass whether the neighborhood gets much needed shade trees? They don't even live there. Some don't even live in JC! It was very frustrating.

Vote for the only mayoral candidate who DOES NOT OWN A CAR. He knows about life as a pedestrian and a bicyclist in this town.
Vote for Dan Levin. miles

I've been working there Saturdays as a 2nd job and all three owners are great guys. They really stand behind their bikes too, with life-time free adjustments.
Its just feels great to finally have a full-featured bike shop in the downtown historic district. Now we just need some bike lanes . . . miles

I don't think Levin's "team" has any goons working for them . . . on the contrary, its a rather "cerebral" crowd. Very different from the Healy/Manzo teams. And I hope they won't be going away no matter what happens this election.

This city needs shade trees in many areas, and the city needs to just plant them, as long as they first locate the existing sewage lines and don't go near them. The trees provide relief from the summer sun, they help with air-pollution, and provide beauty.
The owner of a property (and I'm a homeowner here) should not have a say in whether the tree gets planted or not, but should have a say in where it gets located in front of their house. Owners can't control who parks on the street in front of their house either so this should be a no-brainer.

from JJ:
Hudson pol blasts DEP 'incompetence' In a letter written to the state Commissioner of Environmental Protection, Assemblyman Louis Manzo, D-Jersey City, blasts the agency for failing to crack down a paper recycling plant that?s stinking up a section of Jersey City. ?I?m appalled by the lack of sensitivity and urgency of NJDEP to address an issue that is affecting a mostly minority community,? Manzo wrote to DEP Commissioner Lisa P. Jackson about the Reliable Paper Recycling located at 1 Caven Point Ave. ?If this issue were in a wealthier community in our state, I honestly feel NJDEP would respond differently ? as they have in the past,? Manzo stated. Manzo added that NJDEP was either in ?collusion? with Reliable, or the ?the only explanation is utter incompetence.? DEP spokeswoman Elaine Makatura declined to comment on Manzo?s letter since Jackson hadn?t read it. Makatura said the DEP ? as well as its local arm, the Hudson Regional Health Commission ? has verified odor complaints and issued violations having to do with the plant ?operating equipment without approved permits, failure to comply with permit conditions and failing to maintain records of the material processed at the facility.? So THIS is the source of the smell I talked about months ago!!
http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewt ... t_id=39268#forumpost39268 it wasn't someone's 3-bean chili at all. Seriously, though, I have a 10 month old kid and I don't want him breathing this. It is putrid. It seems they are on shaky ground with their outdoor expansion and we need to take the next step to close that part down.

quote: "And I don't care if Goldman's attorney threw you a bone....they already knew they had the case won."
From what I know of the case, New Gold Equities did NOT win the case on any merits of their arguments. They won because our councilmen caved and refused to fix a minor procedural error. The warehouse district, and its potential to be another DUMBO or SOMA (San Francisco warehouse district, like SOHO) was one of the reasons I bought a house in JC. I've been inside 111 First St. and it could be an amazing place to live with gorgeous loft style apts. Goldman could have made gobs of money staying within the development guidelines of the area. And the city would have created a nostalgic oasis from the antiseptic highrise nowhere land that is Newport. Picture First St. as a pedestrian-only cobblestone square with outdoor seating everywhere, brick warehouses re-purposed to cafes, restaurants, galleries, stores, and bars on the ground level, and offices and loft apts in the upper floors. One needs only the tiniest amount of imagination to see what we have lost. But I guess some people can't see past a few more bucks in their pocket. One of ugliest parts of the city is easily the highrise towers of apts that line Montgomery Ave. around Grove St. PATH, surrounded by wastelands of parking lots. I too would love to see a new bldg by Koolhaas. Just not at the expense of 111 First St. Put it somewhere else. - miles
