Re: Please clean up your dog poop...

I'm not so sure the dog run is going to solve the dog poop problem. Two weeks ago, I brought my dog to the dog run in Lincoln Park, for the first time. The first thing we saw when we got there was a horse size pile of dog crap.

I have also witnessed what Stani mentions in his/her post. She's not exaggerating in the slightest. But recently I was thinking I haven't seen the police around to enforce the dog leash law the way they were last fall soon after the alleged daschund incident. Of course I am not at all surprised this tappered off as time went on.

The truth is you just left a steaming load of crap on this thread. Plain and simple we do clean up after our dogs so stop spreading lies to move forward your bizarro agenda. I can guarantee that 90% of the people who complain on this kind of thread go nowhere near Hamilton Park.

Wrong. I live close to Hamilton Park, walk my dog on a leash through the park and have witnessed what I describe many times. On several occasions, I've had to go up to the offending dog owners and shown them where they're dog's poop is. I'm sure there are dog owners in those groups who pick up their dog's poop, but there are many who don't. In particular, there are some dog owners who have multiple dogs they take to the park and let roam around, and I know for a fact that they're not keeping track of where the dogs go and what they do.

Why not approach your neighbor directly asking them to clean up their dog's pee. I wouldn't suggest an argumentative tone, but something diplomatic yet honest.

Something along the lines, "I totally understand how hard it is to deal with getting your dog outside to relieve him/herself, especially when you're on a tight schedule and have a lot of other stuff going on. But it's still important to clean up if they pee in the common hallway or else they will continue to pee in that exact spot and it's a nuisance to your neighbors in addition to being unsanitary."

It seems like more and more people are moving in to Jersey City that believe cleaning up their dog's poo is beneath them. They want the dogs because they make good accessories but they don't want to actually clean up after them. In my apartment building there is a person who's dog consistently pees on the way down the stairs. Now I have dogs and I understand that sometimes they don't make it outside but you clean it up. This person just leaves it on the stairs to dry. It got to the point where there was a thick layer of dried pee on the stairs and always a fresh wet trail from that days accident. I'm sure someone is thinking, "Why don't you take the initiative and clean it up?" and my answer is that I don't want to give this person the idea that they are above cleaning up after their dog. Instead I resort to the passive aggressive action of posting signs with arrows at the pee trail. Something to the extent of "You're dog does not have opposable thumbs.....therefore you have to clean up after them." Unfortunately it didn't work because the pee trail remained. Okay rant over.

Actually, I just wanted to know what it was like in general. I understood it to be the first residential neighborhood in Manhattan, and then it became occupied by artists and actors mostly. So I was sort of wondering what the store front facades looked like, whether it was more tidy or anything else more particular. Quote:

If you mean what I think you mean (nudge-nudge, wink-wink) I had not a clue as to anything that may or may not have been going on. All I can say now of Christopher Street in 1947 was what all of us 13 year olds in those innocent days absolutely knew for certain about the whole Village:

The men were all queers (whatever *that* meant) and the women would do sex (whatever *that* was) for anyone.

All men and women in the Village were commies. Also, both men and women had beards.

As I said, in those days, we kids knew all that for certain.

Life was much simpler when I was 13.

I subscribe to this advise, and in speaking with a few restaurant owners they have shared their frustration with getting staff to understand the value of customer service and taking a customer's money when they are waiving it them.

My approach may not be the best. On the first offense I give the wait person a good tip and explain to them what I thought was lacking in addition to speaking to the manager or owner. When I go back I offer a hardy and sincere greeting hoping to show there are no hard feelings. If the service doesn't improve, on the second visit I reflect my dissatisfaction in the tip.

I want these establishments to work, and continue to support them, hoping that as density grows, business will improve and the owner may be able to find better staff.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

I have been to Skinner's Loft twice since it opened. Each time I was fortunate to have experienced very attentive wait staff. On my first visit I had a distinctive Belgian beer and spring rolls which where were pretty good. On my second visit I took my date and we were really impressed by both the excellent service and our meal. The place is decorated and furnished well. I found it to be a warm atmosphere and I look forward to sitting near the fire place in the winter and having drinks on the outside deck in warmer weather. Again Maggie has provided Jersey City with another winner.

The HPNA donated 8 trees in her honor, lining the path in HP starting from Pavonia and W. Hamilton Place in her honor. We purchased one tree for each year of her short life. The trees bend along the path going towards the corner of 8th and W. Hamilton.

Re: Do we have a dog leash ordinance in JC?
Home away from home
Home away from home

Lasty Friday morning at approximately 7:40 am while walking my leashed, 7 month old bulldog puppy in Hamilton Park, one neighbor came bouncing in with his pit mix off leash into the park. While my puppy was quietly socializing with two other leashed dogs, this pit mix lunged at my bully and pinned him. The behavior was clearly aggressive and not at all playful. When I told the owner he should leash his dog, his reply to me was, "that's what dogs are about" He never even asked if my dog was ok.

Going forward I will make a practice of calling both the police and NID everytime I see ANY dog off leash in HP. Neither me nor my dog should feel we are in imminent danger of being attacked;nor should anyone else. Should an unleashed dog ever attack anyone or anyone's dog, the victim has a right under the law to defend themselves and their dog with the same force with which they are being attacked.

It amazes me, how many people have such a misplaced sense of what they "know" about their dogs, as their dogs go running around the park with little control by the owners. Especially, annoying is to see owners chatting away with their neighbors as their dogs run around unleashed while the owners aren't even looking at their dogs.

I suspect that ultimately an additional dog run will have to be built someplace out side of Hamilton Park to accomodate the growing number of dogs that may coming in to the neighborhood with all the new development.

Frankly the dog runs in all four plans are more than adequate and bigger than what I've seen in many other places. In fact a colleague of mine from Manhattan came by just this past Sunday, and I showed her the area for the dog runs and she made just that comment and further commented she would be surprised if everyone wasn't thrilled.

If only one tennis court is designated multiuse, its not likely it will change people's conduct when deciding to play ball in the other areas of the park. For one, at most times of the day during appropriate weather conditions, at least one is being used for tennis. So even if its multiuse, it will typically be used for tennis. Alternatively, if the court designated for tennis only isn't being used for tennis at a particular time, its not likely that some who wants to use it for volleyball won't. What's going to drive people to play ball in the undesignated areas is the additional density of humanity moving to the area. In conunction with the dispostion of the actors.

While I am most definitely voting for plan D, because it clearly accomodates the vast majority of the needs of the community as experssed, I find all of the plans to be fine.

I for one am very greatful for the effort put in to this and will be happy to finally see a renovated Hamilton Park.

People will only be as disappointed as they allow themselves to be. All four options offer a park with more and better accomodations than what we have now.

Re: Hamilton Park Renovation - Meeting Dates

When we first embarked on the balloting process, I warned a lot of folks that the end result would not be what any one person had envisioned, because many of our interests would conflict somewhere along the line. So we should keep our expectations in place, and accept the fact that we share the park with a bunch of other folks. Once the dog run issue came up, I always said it would be a good idea if the tennis courts could be shifted east and the dog run placed between the gazebo and the tennis courts. Of course I didn't anticipate that Pavonia Ave would open up through the hospital, which most agree is a nice new benefit.

The HPNA never promised that the results of the ballots would be adopted in its entirety nor did we say we would open up voting on the design. We hoped the city architect would have taken the report, adopt most of it and figure out how to design it to meet most of the community's needs and desires.

Like Brewster, I don't we should be again voting on the multiuse court issue, when it was already addressed in the original ballotting. But this was the result or consequence of the last community input meeting. Of course, like supperfurry, I somehow doubt that labeling only one tennis court multi use would stop other folks from using both courts for purposes other than tennis. Unless of course the composition of the new tennis court would somehow warrant strick enforecment of a tennis only code.

I just hope most folks could appreciate how much work has been put into this, and how much progress has been, Then ultimately just enjoy the park for for what it is, while understanding that we have to share it and keep their expectations in check.

Finally, I would vote for D. It seems to make the most accomodations for the community.

Lets not forget to thank Jen Greely for her added expertise to the project, which would have cost the city in excess of $100,000 had they had to pay for such services.

With the additional 700 or so people moving in to the new developments in the Hamilton Park area, there is most definitely going to be much greater demand for more tennis courts, soccer fields, tracks, etc. etc. So hold on.

Currently to play soccer you have to trek to Lincoln park.

The roller hockey rink in Mary Benson park and the tennis courts in Hamilton park are more frequently used for soccer than they are their intended purpose.

Please lets have a public soccer field in Ward E!

Your comment that the HPNA did not support gardens simply is not true, and you know that to be the case. As an organization we had no opinion one way or another. We just wanted the community at large to decide. Many HPNA board members personally, myself included did in fact support the idea of appropriate and professionally planned gardens.

What I find concerning is that you think its ok for you to have your private gardens but the garden pre school cannot have their gardens.

We live in a society that has a preference for nuturing the development and well being of children. Supervised gardening sounds to me like a great way to give children an early sense of actualization and community contribution.

I hope this string is put to rest soon.

This was not a secret process. I seem to remember people hanging out in the park for hours--on five separate days--collecting survey responses after the survey was publicized.

To add to your point, we counted the ballots in public and invited neighbors to help in the counting.

One evening we were there in the dark in the dimly lit gazebo, getting eaten up by mosquitos.

Assault/wilding incident on 9th and Erie
Home away from home
Home away from home

Last evening one of my neighbors called to advise of a reported assault on a late 40s something man, buy a gang of young teens between the ages of 13 to 15 at the corner of Erie and 9th. The gang of teens assaulted the victim with a metal pipe. The victim was able to wrangle the pipe away from one of the teens, who then fled. My neighbor brought the victim to the East District police department. Later that evening that same neighbor saw what appeared to be the same group of teens. At the same time the police also saw the teens and chased them.

I think there may have been an apprehension.
