Disagree. The intent of sick days is to not penalize people for not coming to work because they are genuinely ill. This buyback nonsense is horse****. The private sector, in general, does not recognize buybacks for unused sick days. Just ridiculous. The problem is entitlement, plain and simple.

So, they stole a half million dollars and get a total maximum combined sentence of 9 years? (Probably a lot less in the end.) Disgusting. And I will never understand the logic of concurrent sentences. Why even bother? Might as well say they're innocent of the secondary charges and stop trying to make people think that justice is being served.

And they must pay full restitution of the half million? 287 years to pay it off? Where's the money? Nine (probably more like six) years in the slammer doesn't seem too bad for a half million dollar cash payout. Our court systems bite the big one. And no one even thinks about the few hundred thousand that it costs to investigate them and pay for the prosecution and their imprisonment. What is WRONG with this city, county and country?

Voted as well. My main issue was the corruption and incompetence in virtually every department of city government. That's a huge undertaking for Mr. Fulop but perhaps he can make a dent.

Though the maintenance is very high, I regret not having purchased there. The grounds are cool and the location is great. Bought my place about three years ago and toured the models and the layouts are very cool. You're going to hear stories about rats and vermin but they're from the angry tenants who have to evacuate due to the condo conversion. Varick and Monmouth, the two cross streets are pretty quiet and have some nice homes. The community is good and I know a couple of people who live there and love it.

Did anyone else notice that this was the first entry from the Yelp reviewer? Healy probably had to dig deep into the folks in his administration to find someone who could write something this grammatically correct, but I'm guessing it was not crafted by an old-time Jersey City resident who frequents "regular" bars. To quote the review "you can check your tofu and mineral water at the door. Instead, pull up a chair, have a beer and a burger, and watch the game or B.S. with the friendly staff." Yep, this was written by a neighborhood regular guy.

And snakes have hips.

Re: Parking Ticket

I've had just the opposite experience. I have found tickets on my windshield at the end of the day and gone home and paid them on-line immediately because I didn't want to forget and be hit with extra charges. I thought the handheld terminals sent the tickets to a central data base right away. Do they still use written parking tickets as well?

Gee, wish I said that...wait, I did. Hard to believe that everyone who has been a victim of this nut is rolling over and playing dead. Call her out! You can only change things if you attack the source. Don't let this lunatic have control over you. Pound on her door and tell her to stop! Screw the nice letter. She STOLE from you.

I don't know this woman, but from what I've read I'm guessing that she's not at home reading jclist. Maybe one of you that has been her victim should post a note on her door or send her a letter telling her that she's being watched and if she steals any more plants she will be arrested.

When the pension funds run dry and the rank and file realize that they're not going to receive the $300K payout for accumulated "sick" time, and when they go to cash their pension checks and they start to bounce, maybe the union heads will finally realize what supreme idiots they've been. In the meantime, Healy expects us to swallow that police promotions are going to SAVE us money. It's a travesty. Plus layoffs in the tax assessor's office??? GREAT timing.

This happens in the suburbs too...ALL the time. This is not a city vs. suburbs issue. It is, as others have pointed out, a matter of common courtesy. These rude individuals need to feel like they have SOMETHING between their legs that gets attention.

Wait. Bill O'Reilly ended the clip with saying she can be "tutored." In basic American History? When she learns to put a "g" at the end of every verb that ends with "ing" she might sound a little more credible....but I doubt it.

And why do we need pols in the internet age???

Seems to me that we could really put power in the hands of the people, so long as we have the right balances in place. Close fed and state senates and congresses. Close municipal councils. Let the people really decide. Why not?

Twenty, maybe even ten years ago, I would have agreed with you. But with the next generation of idiots coming up who are comfortable with texting each other when they're sitting across the table from one another and behave as blind lemmings who take each statement from the media as gospel, there will only be a select few with with solid, basic education and skills who know how to capitalize on their environment and use the internet as a tool rather than a lifestyle. The trick will be, as it is today, to identify the correct people and elect them to leadership roles.

That being said, anyone who would consider electing someone who believes that Paul Revere's ride was to alert the British, when the average student is taught about Paul Revere in 4th grade history, is even more ignorant than Governor Palin.

I've made the mistake a couple of times of driving through the Newark/Palisade intersection at lunchtime. I've seen as many as FIVE cops standing off to the side shooting the bull with each other as the kids completely disrupt traffic and dodge in and out of traffic. While I don't agree with the NJ Teacher's Union about their demands, you couldn't pay me enough to teach in a Jersey City high school.

I hope that the victim of the assault is OK.

The unchecked horror that this administration bestows on the residents of this city never ceases to amaze me. We either elect Fulop or beg the state for an audit of the criminal behavior that continues to grind us to a pulp. I don't see a citizens' uprising happening in the near future, but please, PLEASE don't put these horrors back into office. Use your vote to get rid of these vial creatures. I fear that no new administration can correct this mess, but at least we should give it a shot.

My understanding is that the city will issue no new curb cuts period. Except, of course, for the new construction projects that are getting tax abatements as well and lining administration pockets.

I'll be there buying some excellent veggies and will peruse the tables of local folks. I have to say, Parkman, that the efforts of you and your compatriates are MUCH appreciated, despite the people who abuse the park. All of the flowers and trees look tremendous and I'm happy to have the opportunity to support small businesses in a beautiful setting.

Hamilton Park, a venue with much less traffic and more expensive housing stock is ready for a group like yours to bring the same sense of community to their neighborhood. In the meantime, I'm glad to live in VVP and am thankful for all of the work that you all do.

Re: Europa Polish Deli

Just stoppped by to pick up my holiday stash. My family has been going to Europa for over 50 years and the new management has kept all of the great, traditional stuff and have added a slew of new products. The place is clean and bright, the old iron gates are down and they now have a selection of hot "to go" items. Customers and the happy, young women behind the counter were chattering away in Polish. Bought myself 2 rings of Kielbasa (1 fresh, 1 smoked) and 4 pkgs of Pierogi. I'm gonna be a hero with the family this weekend.

That sounds like research that I could get on board with! You should apply to the city for funding...you just might get it. They may even give you an Infiniti to get you from pizza joint to pizza joint.

Re: Question on green card for multi family property

This is not in the realm of the city. For a resale, the city will only issue a smoke detector certification, not a CO. But that's only for a 3-family or less. For 4-families and above, the state must issue the green card and it's up to the seller to provide it. Throw this back to the sellers and their attorney.

Great post, itgirl. I actually just went to Boulevard Drinks last week for the first time and strolled around a bit and was pleasantly surprised at the activity. JSQ still has good and bad blocks, but so does downtown. It's going to take some time but PATH access is a BIG plus for the areas, not to mention the places that you cited.

Well, the good news here is that with young Mr. Healy's job as a firefighter, his medical insurance would pay for a rehab stint as well as counseling for domestic violence. And he wouldn't have to worry about losing his job during his absence. Do it dude. You're on a nasty path.

This family needs to just stay away from alcohol...period. It's clear that they don't know how to drink socially like adults because father and son have both shown their nasty, foolish and downright ignorant sides by exhibiting illegal and immoral behavior because they don't know when to say stop. Quit going to bars, you idiots, and choose a meeting in a church basement somewhere instead. And for a father to defend this violen outburst is borderline psychotic. Try to get your son some help instead of defending this horrible behavior, you hapless moron!

Would someone please trip this drunken-buffoon-excuse-for-a-mayor as he's walking down City Hall's steps? And ask him who told him the meaning of the word petulant. He's just a disgrace and should keep his mouth shut. I think I'm over believing that he's just ignorant and doesn't actively participate in all of the criminal activity. I now recognize that he's just barely 4th-grade smart enough to participate in all of the collusion.

Re: Need a licensed general contractor

Home away from home

Though it may be hard to believe, I actually used Home Depot (not the one in JC - this was before they opened so I don't know how they are) to re-do my kitchen. I made an appointment with one of the kitchen designers, gave her the dimensions of my kitchen and told her what I wanted in terms of cabinet functionality, appliance placement, etc. She designed a perfect kitchen right in front of me, asking for my input all along the way and for free! I actually purchased my cabinets and granite through them at quite a significant savings and both were beautiful. They have everything from standard, stock cabinets to high end stuff. And I bought my appliances through a reputable, discount dealer.

The advantage is that if anything goes wrong or you're dissatisfied, the company makes sure that the fix is done. Independent contractors aren't guaranteed to come back. Home Depot will. And I understand that Lowe's does a good job as well.
