Maybe this kind of shop will help upgrade the area. After all, there's Ox and Skinner's Loft too.

There are several places on Jersey. Imagine Atrium is closing in April, and that's right next to the Made with Love Bakery. Then there's the old Jersey Games spot on Jersey between Columbus and Wayne, and something else vacant right next to it. Is the spot on Grove to the left of ReMax taken yet?

My family has been seeing Dr. Bruce Meyer for years. He used to be associated with the Lenscrafters at the mall. Now he has a private office at Newport Vision Center, 123 River Drive - validated parking I believe. He and his partner are optometrists, but Dr. Meyer also diagnosed a medical problem in one of my sons. Regarding the eye drop thing, don't blame the office for the wait involved there. That's just how long that particular exam takes - but you don't have to that every year.

When I've had garbage collection problems downtown, I emailed Steve Fulop and he emailed someone named Crystal Fonseca at c.fonseca@jciaonline.org who got it taken care of right away.

Leave them a note telling them that it will cost less to fix now than paying out on a slip and fall lawsuit.

And you seem to ignore my preference about having enough shopping carts immediately available.

Given the number of large markets in Jersey City, each has chosen to compete by offering different servcies. Pathmark has made its choice. A&P chooses to compete in different ways. You too make your choices based upon your needs, as every other consumer does on a daily basis. I simply do not take the emphasis of one form of service over another as personally as you do. You choose to feel like a victim because you cannot take the cart into the lot.

But you don't have to settle for less. You have a car, so drive to the store you feel treats you the way you want to be treated. People in Jersey City drive to Edgewater or Milburn to go to Whole Foods. As much as they would like one in JC, I haven't heard them complain that they're treated like second class citizens because Whole Foods, for its own good business reasons, feels that it cannot thrive in Jersey City.

I have that painting! Just a slightly different angle. Painted by Miguel Hernandez. I bought it a few years ago at Catherdral Arts at Grace Church. Mine has no grafitti.

For us, it's the opposite. A refund from NYS and payment to NJ.

On the NYS non-resident tax, you have to fill out your taxable income submitted on the Federal 1040 and then halway through the form you pull out what was earned in the other state if you live in the other state.

What do you mean "I hold the chain responsible." Responsible for what?

I too hold the chain responsible -- responsible for making sure there are carts available when I go to store. And they have done that. They have done that in a way that you find offensive, but it sure works for me. I don't have to walk all over the parking lot to find a cart the way I do at other stores sometimes. It works.

There are many reasons to shop or not to shop at a particular store. Cleanliness, freshness of meat/produce, prices, sales, friendliness of staff. This is just one of them.

Lafayette, the bollards aren't there because of the color of the patrons. The bollards are there because when they were taken down the carts were stolen. If the carts keep getting stolen, then there are no carts for people who want to shop and they will go elsewhere or prices at the store have to be jacked up to cover the cost of constant replacement. Then will you start howling about the store gouging its customers and treating them like second class citizens becuase of their color?

Pathmark took away the bollards for a time years ago with disastrous results. Their entire supply of carts disappeared within weeks. I think they'd rather insult a few people who don't know the history of the problem than have to replace the carts over and over again.

Why all this hostility toward pregnant women? Will a little common decency really ruin your day? Yes, each individual pregnancy is voluntary (and fortunately it's also temporary) but it sure is necessary for the species. Just be glad it's not you.

I don't think Elysian has taken "out of Hoboken" kids for a while, as those kids have to go to end of the list behind children from Hoboken -- by law. As you note, LCCS's list extend from here to eternity, but Ethical Culture is worth looking into. I know they've had their lottery already but I do not know anything about their wait list.

Brajczewski Plumbing on Morris Street, I think. It was quite a while ago. They did a great job for a very reasonable price (based upon 2-3 estimates) BUT it took forever for them to do the work after we had agreed on the price. And then they just showed up one morning without notice. They dug underneath the slate sidewalk by hand to avoid gas lines. One thing that stands out in my mind was that Kook and Sons came in with an estimate that was double the price, and they wanted to demo the slate.

Unfortunately, the pipes from your house to the city lines are your responsibility. We had to hire a plumber to dig under the sidewalk and the street when our sewar pipe cracked.

Showing intent might be difficult if the assault was part of the robbery. Felony murder is a slam dunk. What does 'hate crime' add to a 25 to life sentence?

Once you deduct the price of the rip-off parking at Newport, Edgewater ticket prices are no higher than Newport. ... and so much nicer.

McNair teacher Dr. Sara Solberg in today's Jersey Journal
Home away from home
Home away from home

Sewing the seeds of love, memories
Wednesday, February 25, 2009
LISA ZIMMERMANN
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER
A s an recipient of the Princeton Secondary School teacher of the year, a lover of Shakespeare and a veteran English and French teacher, Sara Solberg, 59, of Jersey City, knows stories of heroism, friendship and courage, but little did she know her own life would embody such a tale. Solberg was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer - stage 4 Glioma (GBM), the same type of cancer doctors diagnosed Sen. Edward M. Kennedy - in March of 2007.

"You don't beat this," she said. " Nobody ever told me there will be a miracle, but I love my medical team at Columbia. The best they said is that they were interested in keeping me highly functional."

Solberg said she is highly functional, at least when it comes to her mental capabilities. However, though the cancer spared Solberg's mind, the tumor location caused her left side to paralyze. This consequence hinders Solberg's ability to complete her dying wish to sew each of her three children a quilt.

"I don't know where my left hand is," Solberg said illustrating that sewing would be an almost impossible task.

This is where Solberg's long time friend Jane Harris, of South Orange and formerly of Jersey City, stepped in to help. Harris' son used to be a student of Solberg's at McNair High School and later on the two ladies formed a friendship.

"I'm going to miss her tremendously," Harris said. "Anything I can do to make it easier for her is worth a lot."

So Harris spoke with her friend Edna Davi, of Kearny, a social worker, who used to teach sewing classes at Bergenfield High School and the Bergenfield and Kearny Adult Schools.

Davi admits that to some, Solberg's project might appear overwhelming because Solberg gathered a wide variety of fabrics over the years.

"I sewed to put myself through college, so it doesn't scare me - nothing in the sewing range scares me. I've been sewing since I was 10," Davi said with confidence.

A third recruit came to mind when Harris asked Davi if any of her students might be able to help. Davi thought of Jennifer Greenhalgh, a former student who suffers from cerebral palsy.

"It's mind-boggling that she can do this," Davi said of Greenhalgh's ability to sew. "I've always been in awe of Jennifer. It's just as good as someone who sews that has full faculties. To be able to coordinate two hands and a foot at the same time for her is way more daunting than for a normal person. It's pretty amazing."

Greenhalgh, of Arlington, said she naturally progressed to quilting.

"It was another thing that I wanted to try and I got really into it and one thing led to another and I got involved with other people who quilt," she said.

While Harris, Davi and Greenhalgh quilt, Solberg continues to challenge her own mind even though she can't use the left side of her body.

"She keeps herself very busy," Harris said. "She's teaching herself Spanish, she told her house worker not to speak English to her because she said it's about time she learn Spanish."

Harris continued: "Considering all she's facing, she's a big role model for all of us."

Though Solberg is in hospice and bedridden, she hasn't given up on herself.

"It doesn't mean I'm going to die in 24 hours."

So the three woman continue to take fabric scraps and ideas from Solberg. They are weaving themed quilts for each of Solberg's three children: Maggie, 26, a Shakespearean scholar, will receive a medieval themed quilt; Betsy, 24, who spent time abroad in Japan teaching English, will receive a Japanese themed quilt; and Gidion, 18, who Solberg says loves all things Nordic, will receive a Nordic themed quilt. Though these three women's sewing capabilities may vary, all of their hearts appear to be in the same place.
