Say something? Scream? Yell? Get up? Make a scene? Alert the driver? Fight your way through? Not post about it on the internet afterwards?

Why do dinner? You're locked in for a set amount of time, and then when it comes to the bill, you're out about $100. First date means the woman orders a steak or some other expensive crap.

Go DO something. Get your ass out of the seat. Grab a drink if you have to, then go walk along the water. We only live next to the coolest city in the world.

RNA posts update about NJ Transit 119 / Heights
#9
Home away from home
Home away from home

Riverview Neighborhood Association reached out to NJ Transit / Academy (along with about a hundred other furious riders) about the shitshow that is the 119 that services Bayonne (JFK) > JSQ > JC Heights (Central Ave) > Port Authority. They actually received a half-decent response

For those that are unaware: the 119 the most direct bus route from the Heights to NYC. The buses are NJ Transit buses but the route is contracted out to Academy.

TL;DR -- Some asshole Academy driver just decided not to do his/her job and caused a horrible rippling effect through rush hour during the entire month of September. NJ Transit is just now doing something about this, and supposedly that driver has been fired.

Here's what RNA posted on their Facebook page:

Quote:
"As I mentioned to you in an earlier conversation this week, we reached out to Academy for an explanation of the missed #119 trips and directed them to take corrective action to ensure more reliable service. In addition to some labor issues, we have been advised that an individual bus operator was responsible for failing to make the trips into the PABT for the scheduled departures that our customers reported as missing. The operator has been terminated. NJ TRANSIT also became aware of the notice that was posted near the Academy gate at the PABT advising customers that certain trips are cancelled. Academy claims they did not post the notice. However NJ TRANSIT informed Academy that this notice is unacceptable and must be removed ASAP.

In light of the service issues, our Private Carrier Affairs Division has also taken the following first steps in an effort to improve reliability of service, accountability by Academy and communications with customers. This is a work in progress, and modifications and improvements will be made as needed.

Reliability
Private Carrier Affairs (PCA) Staff is reviewing GPS data daily to monitor trip reliability.

Academy was advised that beginning Monday, September 28, NJT will require a dispatcher at the PABT departure and arrival gate supporting the #119 service.
Accountability

PCA will reconcile dispatch sheets, which much show all arrival and departure trips along with passenger loads, with the tracking system to ensure that all trips are reported and correctly identified on the dispatch sheet.

Academy has been directed to report any known missed trips based on operators not reporting or completing an assignment directly to NJ TRANSIT and identify which trips will be effected. Any trips that cannot be identified would result in a notice being forwarded to Academy immediately for an explanation.

NJ TRANSIT imposes penalties beginning at $150 for a missed trip and reduces the monthly contract payment by the number of hours and miles attributed to the missed trip.

Communications
The presence of a dispatcher at the gates will enable up- to- date information to be shared with customers.
With the overcrowding issues we are experiencing with the #119 service, any missed trip compounds the problem and creates a snowball effect on the balance of the peak rush hour service. I want you to know that we are committed to finding a long-term solution to the overcrowding problem within the limitations of the PABT and our own constrained resources. Going forward, we will step up monitoring of Academy to ensure its compliance with the terms and conditions of its contract. Academy Senior Management has ensured us they will cooperate to in seeing that all service issues are appropriately addressed and service is provided at the level maintained several months ago. Academy has also assured us that the driver issues have been corrected and all trips moving forward will be covered.

I apologize for the inconvenience the #119 customers have experienced the last few weeks and ask your patience as we attempt to address both the short and long-term challenges on the #119 service. Once again, I would remind you that travel on all NJ TRANSIT buses, rail and light rail lines is subject to delays and interruptions through Monday due to heavier ridership and congestion resulting from the Papal visit."

What doesn't make sense? Taking a taxi? Using a metered spot so you can park as long as you'd like as long as you feed the meter? Not using a doctor in Zone 2 if it's "ANTI-FAMILY" (which is the funniest thing I've heard all day, thanks for that one). The only thing that doesn't make sense is you.

Quote:

People use street parking if their garage door is out or they must take care of family business. It is no wonder people here do not use their real names, their statements would be an embarrassment to family and friends.

Why should the city accomodate a parking garage door problem on PRIVATE PROPERTY? Who gives a shit if your garage door is not working. Take it up with whatever board operates your property. Instead, you bitch that Zone 2 is not accomodating of your private property issue. Go do what every other person in the city does: find a non-zoned spot, find a private lot, or god-forbid, you keep your car in the garage for the day and use public transit or a taxi.

If Yvonne's life is inconvenienced for one day, she's at the City Hall the next day crying about how unfair the city is. Tough shit, grow up already. Not physically, either -- mentally.

Yes, because the person parked longer than two hours. Should the city put up parking signs that say "PARKING 2 HOUR LIMIT EXCEPT THOSE GETTING MEDICAL TREATMENT OR ATTENDING A WAKE." I hope you get ticketed every time because these are your options that you're too stupid to explore on your own:

  • Walk to the wake. It's good exercise, and it might make you live longer. The person that you're attending the wake for should have listened to the same advice.
  • Take a taxi! A taxi is cheaper than getting your car unbooted.
  • Use a metered spot on or near Central. Chances are the businesses you're patronizing are on or near this street anyway.
  • Change your doctor to one that has their own parking lot if the one you currently attend is inconvenient.

I hope Zone 2 stays just like it is for the rest of your life.

It's like Jersey City's history only started when you moved here:

I got to go with incompetence on this one too. What was Jersey City thinking when they signed off on Newport? Not against development but it's just poorly done.

So many opinions, so little background knowledge.

Public access to the waterfront is federally mandated. This sometimes came before development (much of Paulus Hook near the former boat house, Port Liberte, etc) but many buildings were put up before this became a thing. These office buildings and residences did not dedicate their ground floor to retail because, well, why would they? Prior to 1988, development could take over a section of the waterfront and completely shut out the public from it.

Unlike Hoboken, downtown Jersey City along the waterfront was a clean slate for the most part between Exchange Place and Newport in the 1980s. Some structures were built on former (or reinforced) pier pilings like the Hyatt. This accounts for the zigzagging on the walkway. This also creates some remote outposts like Taphaus that have opened along the walkway but are a real effort to get to. This also prevents multiple bars or restaurants from opening next to one another. There is no "destination" along the waterfront, only individual establishments.

Other businesses like Henry's on the Hudson (is that even still there?) have some of the best views of downtown but are so obscured by surrounding development.

The fact that the waterfront is available to the general public is miracle.

TL;DR: The waterfront walkway is very successful, as it is both on the waterfront and a walkway. People on a message board are complaining that there aren't enough restaurants along the walkway, which has absolutely nothing to do with the success of providing public access to the waterfront.

There's benefits to putting them on plazas and sidewalks. 1.) The stations are garbage collectors and the sweepers will not be able to get in there and 2.) some asshole will double park and block in every single bike in the station.

Re: Sailing in New York Harbor

While I fully support sailing in the NY Harbor, it's hard to shed a tear for the trust-fund baby Michael "Commodore" Fortenbaugh. First, anyone who bestows themselves with the title "Commodore" is automatically a tool. Second, Fortenbaugh had a small fleet of J-24s at the marina in Liberty State Park pre-Sandy. Following the storm, the club removed its boats from the marina because of dock damage on the north end of the marina. Fortenbaugh never replaced his LSP boats, despite there being a really dedicated group from New Jersey who used the boats regularly.

Fast forward to 2014: The Manhattan Sailing School gets kicked out of North Cove (lease expired, not renewed, given to higher bidder) and Fortenbaugh "reinvents" the club on the New Jersey side. One minute, he gave a big "Fuck You" to New Jersey, and now he has his entire fleet in New Jersey.

Fortenbaugh apologized up and down to his club about moving to NJ. He spelled it out as a necessary evil.

Patronize another club that is happy to set up shop in New Jersey, including the relatively-new Hoboken Sailing Club near 14th St.

You'd have to file a new master deed with the county register. You could stop by their office for guidance. You may find they measure sq footage based on external measurements.

Was looking at JC website, not county, so thanks for pointing me in that direction.

The survey in my master deed from 2006 lists exactly what I had suspected: Total SQFT is X amount, living space is Y amount. Tax assessment was based off of amount X and not my condo, or amount Y. Seems like a pretty straightforward fix. Crossing my fingers here.

Re: Property Tax Appeal - Comparable Sales

Question for the group ...

My place has the wrong SQFT listed. For some reason, my unit includes the entire SQFT on my floor, which includes the common front entrance, staircase and basement access. I have a survey of the entire building that says my specific unit is about 200sqft less than what's listed on the tax assessment. My taxes seem to be assessed based on that incorrect total sqft number. The top floor, which has less common space and more in-unit SQFT, has a tax assessment that's $1k less than me. Something aint right.

I found forms for appealing based on comps, but in this case, I don't want to do that. I want to get the SQFT listed correctly and have my taxes based off of that new (correct) number. Any idea where I can start fighting this battle?

edit: This was a mistake that carried over from the prior owner. They never noticed or corrected it.

I see the difficulty of getting past the Grand light backing up traffic to the crossing, with the inevitable morons who will go even though they can't get through the crossing.

And I asked if the HBLR crossing on Johnston gets blocked? Let me answer that for you: it doesn't. You wouldn't know that, because Johnston Ave is outside of your downtown cocoon.

Quote:
The faith of Lafayette residents, of which you presumably are one, that this will ease their traffic is absurd, and goes against all the history of "bypass" road construction in heavily trafficked areas. The moment you make it easier to drive via any route people will fill it to the point of saturation. Every driver that switches to the bridge route will be replaced by another, I guarantee it. They thought building the Lincoln Tunnel would reduce traffic on the Holland. It did, for a very short time.

Wrong on the first account. I am the furthest from a B-L resident. I do think it's comical that downtown residents see this bridge as a one way super freeway to their beloved, quiet and traffic-free neighborhoods and not as a two-way mutually beneficial logical roadway connection to one of the most prized open spaces in all of Hudson County.

As for your traffic theory, yes, I agree and it is likely to happen. However, this scenario is not the life changing shortcut that will attract the masses that you're predicting. Anyone looking to shortcut the Holland Tunnel traffic is getting off on a legit exit ramp that is the Columbus BLVD exit.
