I enjoy the food there but the biggest plus to Skinners Loft is that it is very Kid friendly. As a father of two, thats important to me.
Also, it has really good burger.

Another reason Skinner's kinda sucks... other than the fact that the food is subpar...

If ever a meal is sent back to the kitchen by a customer, whether the fault is the server's for taking an order down wrong, the chef's for serving a terrible meal, or anyone else for any other reason... that meal still gets paid for in RETAIL VALUE by the server. it comes out of his or her tips!!

so to potential servers, at some point, you'll be paying your employer to let you work.

I understand trying to mitigate mistakes. But making the server pay in retail value for a mistake that may or may not be theirs, well that's just absurd.

I agree with HGLNYC, great atmosphere and friendly staff, but the menu is erratic.

Good penne with shrimp (but really how bad do you need to be to mess that up) and a decent medium-rare filet, but most appetizers are way too salty or just unbalanced in flavor.

But, I LOVE their Fullers ESB on tap, so they keep bringing me in for a few pints!

I think the space is beautiful....love the upstairs room...the staff is friendly and nice but I've eaten about 3 or 4 times and the food is not very good. They seem to try too hard and add too many things. I hope they improve...it's a nice addition to downtown dining but for my money you still can't beat the food at Marco/Pepe.

I ate there for the first time on Friday (1/4). I had the penne and shrimp with garlic sauce. My girlfriend had the pear salad. Service was good and the food came quickly, although the bread came after our meals did. We both enjoyed our meals and hope to try something new next time we go.

Just had a poor meal there too. Nasty duck ravioli was swimming in oil/butter. Strip steak was overcooked and a rough piece of meat. I'll give them 3 months before I go back there again. The dining room and bar are lovely, though. They also have a fab selection of beers.

McGrieves. You make a fair point. Can I prove to your 99.9% degree of certainty that the burger and or fries in question caused my late night visit to the bathroom, no. Am I quite certain, yes. In any event, if readers of this website have enjoyed their food at Skinner's without incident, my experience was, in all likelihood, an aberration.

aMo, what makes you so sure it was the hamburger that made you sick? I hope you are 99.9% certain before making such a damaging comment. Did you contact Skinner's to warn them they may have tainted meat so others would not suffer the same fate as you?

It's nice to know that I might not have been alone as I crouched over the toilet bowl at 3 a.m. and expelled what I too had "wolfed" down only hours earlier. And no, I wasn't at the bar.

From the date of your post, it seems I was there too when you were! I saw several folks at the bar eat cheeseburgers, all who wolfed them down so those folks seemed to enjoy their burgers.

I had the succulent, tasty ribs, the appetizer plate which is a meal in itself with excellent cole slaw that was just right, not swimming in a limpid sauce.

Threw up the cheeseburger I had there last night. I'm not kidding. Need I say more?

 Re: Skinner's Loft
if you will also recall, they got rid of the original chef...whose food i did quite enjoy. i'm sure if you've been there since, the menu is not the same. the last few times i've been there, the food has left much to be desired, especially with the price you must pay.
i stand behind the fact that yes, at one moment in time the food WAS good, it is STILL aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but that doesn't change the fact that the place is not worth spending my money to eat at. that's all.
as far as credibility goes, that's your opinion, as this is mine.
i do not mean to offend, but it's just the same sad jersey bar/restaurant story...

Re: Skinner's Loft
don't waste your time or money. this place really sucks. it is aesthetically pleasing decor, but quite nauseating food

This from someone who's first post at jclist said she loved the food, hated the service and found the "...aesthetically pleasing decor..." now to be no more than "...a glorified sports bar..."back then.

Can you say No Credibility, gatobela?

i've been there a few times since they've been open...all i gotta say is HORRIBLE SERVICE!
the food, in my opinion, fabulous :)
mac 'n cheese...better than marco and pepe's
duck confit ravioli...YUM!
pork chop, ribs, cod, ceviche...all of it was delicious!
service sucked
music sucked
nothing but a glorified sports bar trying to rob you for a good meal with diner clad morons.
and i wouldn't recommend order a bottle of wine there...you never know how long it's been open for!?
do they have ANYONE in there that has worked in the service industry before!?
