 Re: Beechwood Cafe & Market
I am NOT a hater nor a snobby person, in fact I eat out and support as many local Jersey City and Hoboken small businesses almost everyday, if my budget allows me. But, I must write this review regarding my most HORRIBLE experience and I am so embarrassed to even show my face in this place ever again! I decided on holding a meeting with an opera singer, I am building my own talent management company, in this cafe because Starbucks was full. I got there 12pm, yes, I know it is a very busy brunch time for a Saturday. Yet, there were several tables available. And, this cafes coffee is good. I wanted to order more, but my goodness everything is so expensive and I wasn't in the mood for cupcakes, scones...and by the way, their selection of soups is horrible, especially the lobster bisque, this must have been right out of a can. I have NEVER tasted the worst bisque in my life! Weeks ago, I had a mediocre french onion soup. This white cheese must've been from Shoprite's store brand vs. Gruyere cheese. And what is it with the rip off pricing of almost everything? Salad? Sandwiches? Glass of OJ?

All of the servers and waiters are angels and work hard, I absolutely love you guys!

But, if the Asian woman is the owner/manager, you need to get the stick out of your ass! Who do you think you are?

I was told within 30 minutes that I CANNOT take up this table, only ordered coffee and orange juice, since they have a line for Saturday brunch.

And, when I went to go to pay, the Asian woman, complete snob, if you ask me, wanted me to move out of her way vs. going around me to ring me up.

I ABSOLUTELY love this city and I frequent EVERY ethnic restaurant possible, as well as cafes. I am not a yuppie that can afford the DOWNTOWN lifestyle, but I sure as hell promote places and bring as many customers, if I can to let them know of a place that I love and feel good about.

Tip: DO NOT bother wasting any penny on this place. I highly recommend you spend your coffee money on Old German Bakery in Hoboken.

You will get EXCELLENT customer service with a pleasant greeting and smile! Pricier than most FAKE "bakeries" BUT you will be treated with the utmost respect AND their pastries are EXCELLENT, German ingredients flown into Hoboken. Coffee is EXCELLENT. Yes, it's in Hoboken, but I'd rather walk miles with blisters on my feet than to EVER be discriminated and feel so embarrassed, because I only ordered coffee and a glass of orange juice.

I don't think Beechwood is too worried about it. EVERY place in Jersey DT has heard it about the service. Maybe it's all the people who move here and have kids or overpay for an apartment or over-extend themselves on rent. Dammit if they're not going to get what they want and when and where they want it. Try this crap in New York.

 Re: Beechwood Cafe & Market
for the past two years, I have held monthly meetings with 8 to 12 people on a weekday evening, we usually were there for about two hours, 8pm to 10pm, -- always good service, never any noticable problem.

also, 2-3 times a month in the weekday mornings, again, good service, no problems.

obviously, others have had bad experiences as posted, perhaps related to the time/day?

but, given my/our experience which also includes with kids, I think the negatives are not the full picture and most people will have a good experience.

The food was okay the last few times I went, but the service is unbelievably bad. Most of the staff clearly don't want to be working there and seem to think theya re too good for their jobs. They have among the worst attitudes of any service staff I've dealth with and could care less whether you actually get what you ordered.

If they could get a halfway decent staff without the attitude, the place would be heaps better.

This is really the perfect kind of restaurant for the location ("Bennigan's for people who sneer at Bennigan's), but I think the new owners have had trouble attracting enough customers to operate on all cylinders because they are still suffering from how absurdly bad the service was under the old owners.

Service is TERRIBLE as of last week. The pseudo punk rock blonde girl is clueless and should go work in a diner. There is no obvious management and it is ridiculously overpriced for what you get.

Boring place. Terrible service. On it's way out.

Why does no one ever seem to step up and correct these things?

 Re: Beechwood Cafe & Market
We went for breakfast last Sunday and it was awful!!!! I had French Toast which was dry and tasteless. My husband had Egg Benedict which was dry too since the poached eggs were hard boiled. Service was slow too and we paid about 40 $ what was ridiculous expensive for the low quality of the food. The place looks so nice and it could be so great sitting at the sidewalk and enjoying the warm weather, but we will definitly not go back!!! Bad bad bad!!! Service was slow too...

"They also gave us very good wine for free with our dinner which I thought was sweet"

Really? Did they mentioned if they were trying to get a liquor license?

 Re: Beechwood Cafe & Market
With the recent nice weather, I've wanted to sit outside with an iced coffee - which drew me to Beechwood. Though some items are overpriced (ie, the fruit salad), I've only ever had good, sometimes great, service.

On Sunday, I sat outside for an hour nursing my iced coffee. My server, Erica, was super nice despite my inexpensive order. She was present and friendly, but didn't hover. And when I asked for my change in quarters (laundry day), she was still smiling and chatty.

It can't have been the tip that motivated her - even my 30% tip is nothing considering the bill was less than $2.50...

 Re: Beechwood Cafe & Market
More than a year ago, I had stupendously, mind-blowingly bad service at Beechwood (I was left to sit with a menu and a small child for about 45 minutes, even though I kept trying to get the waiters' attention), and I had bad takeout service a couple of months ago. Then I had two consecutive cases of good luck at the takeout counter, so I tried eating there with my spouse and child about 2 weeks ago.

The food was great and the service was really good. So, it's possible that the Labor Day service problems mentioned earlier by another reviewer had to do with Labor Day and, in general the service problem is now mostly solved.

 Re: Beechwood Cafe & Market
My husband and I have been to Beechwood about a dozen times now and sadly, I can't say I've ever had good service from that place. The waitstaff seem to run around not knowing which table is theirs and most of the time, we have to flag down someone to get any service. It's so poorly managed which is a shame b/c their food is fairly decent, the decor quite nice. Last time we ate there (Labor Day wkend), I was so distracted by the # of unhappy customers either walking out or complaining to the management about the service, that I could barely concentrate on my food. Get your act together, Beechwood!! You're in a great location and you're totally wasting a great opportunity. This place would totally not survive in Brooklyn or Manhattan...

Beechwood has fair trade? This might just end my Beechwood boycott for good!

I am so happy that we have a real cafe that holds a high standard for food, service, decor, cleanliness and products. Keep up the good work!

 Re: Beechwood Cafe & Market
I've been there 3 times.

Once, I got takeout there on a medium-busy evening. I waited forever for food that had a mediocre taste but was good, clean, wholesome food. Maybe the taste was mediocre because the cooks just used honest ingredients and left off the extra fat, salt, MSG, etc.

The second time, I had good brunch food and ordinary slow service.

This time, I went with my 2-year-old daughter around 2 p.m. during brunch, when the place was about half full and it looked as if 3 waitresses were standing around not doing much, and 1 waiter was somewhat busy. The salmon eggs benedict, the iced latte and the bagel with cream cheese that we got were excellent, and the chocolate milk was sort of OK. But, unfortunately, when I came in, the waiters lost track of who was suppposed to serve me, and, even though I made eye contact with the waitresses and stared at them and tried raising my hand to get their attention, they just looked through me and went about their business. When a waiter finally came over, *he* was nice, but he was harried, and he ignored my request that he please bring the bagel I was ordering for my daughter before he brought other food. (Clue for waiters: If a parent comes in with a toddler, no matter what else is going on in the restaurant, give the toddler some food.) Then, when we'd finished our meal, we never got the check, or even someone flitting by to tell us our check was on the way, and I finally got up and went to the maitre d station and had the check given to me at the register. There, I explained to a fish-eyed manager who obviously didn't care why I wasn't leaving a tip.

In theory, Beechwood Cafe should be a great restaurant. In practice, it's just another waste of a beautiful Grove Street storefront.

 Re: Beechwood Cafe & Market
i've been in there several times during the weekday and even a few times late at night to read/work with a latte, and i have to say, they know how to make a latte.

i can't comment too much on their food because i usually get the same thing - an egg & cheese sandwich, which is also perfect.

as far as the staff goes, they've always been nice, unpretentious and helpful.

The coffee:
On the weekends, the coffee is quite good. Towards the later afternoon, the coffee suffers a bit since either the filters/machines haven't been cleaned of stale oils, or the coffee gets overcooked.

The food:
The omelets are great. The chili was decent. The korean beef stew was good. I've heard mixed reviews about the food though, so this will take more time to judge.

The waitstaff:
Spotty and somewhat clueless. When one of the owners is around (Sawyer?), the service improves markedly.
