We've had a nanny for a few months now and it seems that $15 to $20 seems to be the going rate, depending on how many children you have. You might be able to find lower, but probably not if you're paying on the books. The nannies really look (and who can blame them) at their actual take-home pay.

Good luck! It's a journey...

And oh yeah - paid vacations and holidays are pretty typical. Again, nannies depend on the income, but I think the demand for 2 weeks of her own and 2 weeks of yours as well seems a little steep. Keep looking!

I went the daycare route but it seemed that $15/hr was the going rate around here when I was weighing my options.
There is a Hoboken Moms message board that always has posts from Moms trying to find their nannies new homes when their children go to school, etc. and they no longer need them. Many positive reviews. HobokenMoms@yahoogroups.com
You have to apply to be accepted into the group but it only takes a few days usually and is a great resource for other things too- such as buying used baby items and general advice form Moms in the area.

New to the whole hiring a nanny routine - thanks to the poster who recommended Hoboken Family Alliance and Sittercity.com. Going through the interviewing process now and trying to weed out the *crazies* and find someone whom we can trust.

A couple of questions for those who've already hired caregivers:

1. What's the going rate/week? I have a 6mo old baby.

2. Paid vacation, sick days, etc? Met a woman today who said, "I take 2 weeks of vacation + 5 sick days and am paid for all of it - plus you will take 2 weeks of vacation (without me) and I'm paid for that also." Hmmm, really?

3. Legal Status: would prefer to keep things above board and withhold taxes, SS, etc. Lots of folks I'm meeting are "cash only". I harbor no plans of running for public office or anything but I also want no probs with the IRS. What's everyone else doing?

Any advice from those who've been there before is greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch.

We had a nanny for our little one last year. We paid $575/week. As for vacation, we give two weeks paid but one of those weeks has to be taken when we are away. We pay NYSE holidays that I am off. Daughter is in daycare now but we are expecting our second early next year so interested to hear what others are paying.

Mark, I found wonderful reliable nannies by spreading the word in my neighborhood. Please tune out the unhelpful judgments of people on this board who don't know you or anything about your family. Call a local preschool. They have a network of families who are always looking to recommend their nannies.

The Jersey City Mom's Meetup group has lots of nanny recs. You have to join but it is a very nice resource. Meetup.com

If not, check the Hoboken Family Alliance message boards.

Good luck!

Hi all - we're looking for an experienced nanny to care for a newborn 30-35 hours a week starting in a month or so. Does anyone have any recommendations? You can PM me contact info... Thanks...
