The 3% tax does not apply to motor vehicles or telecommunication equipment. These items are taxed at 6%, (maybe 7% tomorrow). In order to buy something at the 3% rate, you must walk into the store and order the goods and or services offered at that rate, otherwise the tax is 6%. The idea is to have people come into the zone and buy things, not just call and take advantage of the cheaper rate.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like too many internet forums are immune from this.. sigh.

Thanks for the very specific clarification, mark.

HA, HA, HA!Great post! Yeah, it seems that most here would rather just post their query rather than do a search. The multiple threads on "best restaurants", "best doctors", "best pizzaZ" are numerous here and that doesn't even include the 18 months worth of posts here the webmaster "accidentally" deleted when upgrading site software! Every Spring when more turnips fall off the truck and sign up here that "instant gratification" itch posts yet another new topic thread raather than do a search here. How 'bout a variation on the t-shirt slogans: JCList- "Home of the Clueless Poster"

The program is free, yes, but it's complicated. To give up that 3% the state makes you jump through some hoops. To qualify a business must have at least one part-time and one full-time employee, both of whom must be Jersey city residents. Also, the required number of employees (who must be Jersey City residents) increases at least for the first year or two, so if you dont hire more people you lose it. There's also a lot more paperwork involved in filing taxes. I'd love to offer 3% but I don't have enough employees to qualify.

Mark.

Im not familiar with the NJ tax code..but understand that Jersey City has 3% tax on many items. Does this also apply
to large purchases..ie. cars, boats, RVs etc. If so, why dont
dealers advertise this fact. Any info, helpful.
