Once again at that time (3am) of the morning and not within our entertainment precinct, you're out to commit a crime or going to be a victim of crime ... it's a sad fact of reality in JC and many cities these days.

JERSEY CITY - Three men assaulted and attempted to rob a couple in Downtown Jersey City early Friday but wound up fleeing the scene empty-handed, according to a police report.

The 22-year-old woman and 28-year-old man were walking in the area of Eighth and Monmouth streets shortly before 3 a.m. when they were approached from behind by three men, the report says.

The would-be robbers tried to take wallets and cellphones from the couple and punched the man in the face several times, the report says.

But in the end, no proceeds were taken and the robbers fled the scene in a black vehicle with tinted windows northbound on Monmouth, the report says.

The man sustained cuts to his mouth and the woman suffered bruising to her face and a cut to her right eyebrow, the reports says.

They were treated at the scene by Jersey City Medical Center EMS.
