I know someone mentioned Red Ribbon, but I prefer Little Quiapo for Filipino food more. It is off the beaten path and not as commercial, but delicious.

Hi AlexC, last time I had lunch at the culinary Cafe in Journal Square was about 3 years ago. if you check the link of the article I included in my post, it mentions that they only offer the buffet breakfast and lunch on Tuesdays (once a week):

"The Culinary Cafe is open Tuesdays only. Breakfast, which runs about $2 to $3 depending on your selection, is served from 8 to 10 a.m., and the buffet lunch, $12, is served from noon to 1:30 p.m. An excellent place for an networking and/or business lunch."

Looks like the online chat with the school was not of any help. If you happen to be in the area on a Tuesday during lunch time, just stop by and check out the place and the food. The buffet lounge is on the ground floor of the building.

When was the last time you were there and is it a regular occurrence?

I just had this online chat on the website:

Steve: Hello, thanks for contacting The Culinary Conference Center. My name is Steve, may I have your name?

Visitor: Hi, Steve, it's Alex

Steve: Hi Alex, how may I help you?

Visitor: I heard from a local blog that the center serves lunch for $12? Is this accurate?

Steve: Well, each situation is different, however, I can have someone from our office contact you to give you more information on prices, Alex. Which of our services are you interested in?

Visitor: I thought there was lunch or dinner served on a daily basis in which i and my friends/family can walk in and eat
Visitor: not just a catering/specialy event(s)

Steve: I understand, Alex. One of our Event Managers can discuss this in greater detail. Before we proceed, may I have your phone number and/or email to better assist you?

Visitor: no, i'm not interested in a conversation with your Manager. It's a simple Yes/No question

Steve: I'm not able to provide you with pricing, however, I can have someone from our office contact you to provide you with all costs, Alex. Would that be okay?

Visitor: No

Another up vote for Honey. Their food is DELICIOUS. I am glad it isn't closer to me, or I would be there often to pick up some of their pilaf.

Absolutely true. I tend to hit them up about every other week. However, if someone is at Journal Square and walking to lunch, I am not sure it is the closest spot.

Three Beans on Montgomery by there is also very good, and they deliver. So is Taqueria Mi Mariachi, on Sip, just down the hill from Kennedy.

They just serve Starbucks brand coffee (the hot cocoa is excellent). Super nice people work at the cafe. You need a public library card and state ID to enter the cafe, though. The security guards are very strict about non-student access.

As for coffee.. nope. Nada. Zip. I live in the area, and just make my own. I am born and raised in JC, and have lives in this neighborhood for decades, and it has uniformly terrible coffee.

Thanks for the recommendation of Las Americas ~ had a flavorful lunch today of brown rice, black beans, bacalao and plantains. Love that they have loads of sauces on the side - the picked jalapeno and carrots brought it up a notch!

Glad you enjoyed it!

I work in NY and take the PATH home, so on days when I am walking by on my way home, and I know i'll be too lazy to cook, I'll often pick up some of their roast pork, or BBQ chicken, or one of their stews, and some veggies, or just the meat and make a salad at home. Their chicken soup is also excellent.

The little Chinese place right across from them is also pretty good. Their hot and sour soup is great during weather like this.

If you're a cafe con leche fan, El Sabor is good. Aside from that, Dunkin Donuts is your best coffee option.

Maloneys for takeout. Toasted Bagels on Magnolia and Summit for great coffee, fresh bagels and a salad bar that can't be beat.

Le Fortress Blanc, otherwise known as White Castle. If you don't favor sliders try their fish nuggets, they're pretty amazing.

Dosa Hut is across Newark, for Indian different from the northern stuff many of us though was all there was to Indian.

if you're feeling adventurous - try Red Ribbon on 5 corners (Summit/Newark) it's a 5 minute walk:

Palabok - Filipino noodle dish, or
Arroz Caldo - Rice congee with chicken

There's also bread and pastries

Working at HCCC with a limited lunch break I've gotta stay close to the campus/Journal Square Path. So far I dig Morgan Seafood for baba ganoush and cucumber salad, 3 Guys makes an OK soup, and the deli at the Path is good for salads but otherwise I've just seen fast food.

Any better lunch options I haven't yet stumbled upon? Even better, any good coffee?

Thanks!
