Private contractors apparently caused the break with shoddy work. Nice try though.

That's odd, because they've been blocking off that street and digging it up for at least a week now. I think the contractors that were digging up the sidewalk must have busted something open.

And yes, there are occasionally 18-wheelers that get stuck in front of White Star. A couple months ago there were two of them at that intersection stuck in place because they couldn't make the turn.

Not sure about water main breaks around Monmouth, but the City, MUA, UW and PSE&G all seem happy - perhaps because it keeps their workers paid.

There's zero enforcement on semis and trucks that regularly "get lost" on residential streets. And I think that's one of the biggest issues.

We have a 4-5 ton weight limit - we should be fining the cr%p out of these "lost" semis and overweight trucks that are flouting our laws and destroying our residential streets.

FYI: 1 Semi = ~1200 cars in terms of residential street damage.

Jersey City street is closed when road caved in after water main break

By Patrick McGovern | The Jersey Journal
December 31, 2014 at 4:38 PM

JERSEY CITY -- Two separate breaks in water lines have caused a large sinkhole and closed a Jersey City street today.

Pavonia Avenue is closed between Brunswick and Monmouth streets after the roadway caved in late last night.

According to United Water spokesman David Johnson, the water main broke overnight, and United Water shut down service to 95 homes in the area before fixing the break at 4 a.m. this morning. However, as they were finishing their work related to the water main they discovered another break in a service line to one home.
