Officials identify the Jersey City woman who was strangled yesterday

By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

Homicide investigators have released the name of a Jersey City woman who was strangled yesterday and additional charges are expected to be filed against the father of her child, who is in critical condition after officials said he jumped off an elevated highway during a police chase last night.

Following a domestic violence incident earlier yesterday, police responded to a home on Old Bergen Road at about 6:30 p.m. at the request of a concerned friend and found the body of Marilyn Albizu, 33, who was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

Escalade driver leads State Police in wild chase around Newark

NEWARK ? The driver of a vehicle that may be tied to a homicide led police and state troopers on a wild chase that wheeled around the city?s highways, closing one of them entirely for about an hour Tuesday night, authorities said.

Three people were arrested, including the driver, who jumped off an overpass 40 feet, breaking both legs and a hip, authorities said.

Newark police began pursing a red Cadillac Escalade, which was wanted by the Jersey City Police Department for questioning on a homicide, said Sgt. Ronald Glover of the city's police department. The chase began in the area of Girard Place and Hawthorne Avenue - and the driver sped off through parts of I-78, Route 1&9 and I-280 before returning back to the city, Glover said.

An alert was called into several state police barracks at 10:36 p.m., said Trooper Jeffrey Flynn.

The Escalade was traveling east on I-78 with stolen plates, Flynn said.

Troopers pursued the car along the New Jersey Turnpike northbound, then off Exit 15W onto I-280 West, Flynn said.

At the Orange street exit ramp off I-280, the driver struck a civilian vehicle which was stopped in traffic, Glover said.

The driver then took off on foot - across all the lanes of the highway, before jumping off the overpass, Glover said.

Forty feet below the westbound lanes, police found Nathan Williams, a 36-year-old Newark man, with two broken legs, a broken hip - and a semiautomatic Colt .45 handgun which fell out of his pocket, Glover said. Williams had been sought by Jersey City police for questioning on a homicide, authorities said.

The westbound side of the highway was completely closed until 11:42 p.m., when a single lane was open, Flynn said.

Williams remains at University Hospital being treated for his injuries, Glover said. But he has been charged with eluding, unlawful possession of a weapon, certain persons not to have weapons, obstructing administration of law, resisting arrest and possession of stolen property, Glover said.

State police said two other people in the car were also taken into custody.

An autopsy is underway to determine the cause of the woman's death. Initial reports that she was stabbed to death are inaccurate, said a tenant in the same building where the woman lived.

A Jersey City woman was stabbed to death tonight in her Greenville residence but little information on the incident is available, officials said.

The woman lived at 276 Old Bergen Road, where the incident occurred, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Gene Rubino said.

The stabbing was reported at 7:42 p.m., based on emergency responder radio transmissions.

At 8:47 p.m. numerous police cruisers and unmarked cars were double parked in the street outside the residence. Investigators of the Hudson County Prosecutor?s Office?s Homicide Squad could be seen entering and leaving the building.

A woman who lives in the building was standing on the sidewalk across the street but she said she had no idea what had happened inside the residence.

Information on the victim's identity, what had transpired or if anyone was in custody was not immediately available.
