Unfortunally its hard to buy any stickers out the back door like we used to.
I remember about 15yrs ago or so, they used to sell the stickers for like $20.00 a pop. No questions asked!

I failed last year - the inspector told me I needed a new gas cap. Got that and passed. My car is about to die and has lights lit up like a Christmas tree. I have to go for inspection this month and was hoping to get a few more months of life out of poor old Bessie.

I know they still hook up the car via OBD2 to their computer for part of the testing. I'm guessing CEL errors would show on that. The inspection FAQ implies it's the mechanical part of the test they don't perform. Guess if you have a CEL lit, get it fixed before the inspection.

I failed inspection a year and a half ago. My check engine light was on and I failed the emissions test. Turns out my check engine light was on because I needed to replace my catalytic converter, which is an emissions control device.

Had it replaced, check engine light went off, and passed inspection. I'm willing to bet your friend's catalytic converter needs to be checked.

They did away with the full inspection in NJ. Now it's a simple emissions test.

That's exactly what it means. You don't have to inspect a new car for 5 years from purchase in NJ.
