Jersey City water main break affecting service

Updated at 11:17 AM today

JERSEY CITY (WABC) -- A major water main break in Jersey City is affecting water service Wednesday morning.

It is believed to be a 36-inch main in the vicinity of Paulus Hook, and most of the downtown area is without water at this time.

United Water has issued a boiling water advisory to downtown residents, meaning those affected are advised to boil their water for one minute for the following: drinking, cooking or baking, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula or food, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets and all other consumption.

Water does not have to be boiled for the following activities: showering, washing dishes or clothes.

"We understand that this leak presents an inconvenience to our customers," manager of operations John Hroncich siad. "Our only priority is to restore full service back to the area. Employees are diligently working with the City and the Jersey City MUA to resolve the situation as quickly and safely as possible."

Due to the lack of water service, several area schools are being dismissed early. PS 3, MS 4, PS 5, PS 16, PS 22, PS 37, Bright St. Academy, Ferris HS and Junior Academy will be dismissing students at 12:45 p.m..

Parents can pick up children earlier if it is convenient. All staff will remain until the end of the school day, but all after-school activities are cancelled.

Crews are working to isolate the leak, and the Jersey City Office of Emergency Management has been activated.

The Jersey City Fire Department is conducting pressure checks of the hydrants in the affected areas, and water tanker trucks are en route to Jersey City Medical Center for customers to fill clean, empty containers with water if they are without. Bottled water is being provided for patients.

Preliminary reports indicate the affected area is the Hoboken border south to Newark Avenue and Marin Boulevard west to Jersey Avenue.

Crews will remain onsite until the problem is repaired, working with the Jersey City MUA and the city to resolve it as quickly and safely as possible.

Customers in the area may have low or no water pressure. Additional updates will be posted as more detailed information becomes available.
